Hi
looking to replace the front pads on my A4, there seems to be two different braking systems. Lucas and Teves.

How do I find out what system I have? Also, im looking at Pagid Pads...any good?

thanks

Warren

Mine had a wire when we did these the other month and is a 2010 Sline 2.0tdi 170, plus should have ATE imprinted on caliper.

Done a google for you and the following comes up:
Teeves/ATE calipers have a wire spring/clip on the outside of the caliper visible if you have alloys. The Lucas dont have that.

Hope that helps, I was never asked this when I got my new pads and disks ordered.

Thank you, I googled the same thing and found nothing, so thank you for Doing that,

Warren

Check your PR code on data sticker. Brake systems start 1L..mine is 1LT for example. Places like ECP list pads by PR code.

It's very sad but when I got my car I ran the lot through a PR decoder - doing so is surprisingly helpful.

Did the same with the OHs A6 as well.

Be careful if you get Pagid stuff from ECP - they bought the trademark and rebadge cheaper stuff as Pagid. But proper Pagid is good stuff. Don't discount Audi either - TPS often have discounts on brake consumables and they can be cheaper than Pagid.

I've never had a problem with Pagid from ECP. Wouldn't go for their cheaper Eicher brand though.

Audi OEM were a ripoff for the OHs A6 - £113 for parts only. I got Mintex for £30.TPS in Stoke won't serve none trade unfortunately.

So silly , turnover is turnover .

Why there is the inconsistency of some do and some don't , the mind boggles.

I agree but having read numerous threads on the subject it seems the dealerships get grumpy and go off crying to VAG because they can't make their % markup.

I have to say I preferred my BMW where service parts are concerned as they opened up their value service kits for wear and tear common parts. A set of pads for my 330d was £68 inc wear sensor from the main dealer. It wasn't worth buying aftermarket as they were pretty much the same price. Servicing was a damp site cheaper than my A4 too where main dealer was concerned and oil amount was only a litre less.

Not too sad really, I have always gone that bit further and requested a print out of "CAR DATA" as that lists a lot more than the build sheet stuck to the service book and car. Unfortunately, I asked for that at VW today for wife's new Polo and the parts guy could not find how to do it?!

On the "who makes pad pads for VAG?" front, I'm sure the pads on wife's new Polo are branded TRW, which is the name of the company that manufactures "Lucas" brake callipers, hopefully behind that they will still be TMD Friction, ie Textar and Pagid (and Mintex).

I imagine Audi chop and change their brake system vendor depending on how many Euros get offered at contract time :)

Measure your discs - type reg into ECP and you can work out pad size from there.
I've had bad experiences with Pagid - depends how you drive. No good if you drive along twisty roads, they don't like heat. Ok for motorway/city driving.

I keep banging on about these, get yourself some Akebono Premium Euro Ceramics. I took the Textars off. Like I did before. Same stopping power. Feel no different. But I don't have to clean the wheels.

Or have ceramic pads with better stopping power , feel the difference and clean wheels.....

Yes, I suppose I got a bit mixed up there. I have swapped out the OEM Textars twice now. Replaced with Akebonos each time. They feel no different. Same stopping power. Except your wheels stay clean. No dust. Simple as that. There are others, but this is my experience with these.
