ShaunS3's EPIC Build Thread

It just needs its nice shiny brakes fitting now  haha

Are you leaving the rears alone ???

Don't worry I've not forgot about you lol.

Rears are staying on the car, brand new not long back either. Sorry to dissapoint!

Not a better modification to accompany my build than....

A performance haldex controller :)

Always wondered if these were worth the money. Now I'm not sure if it's better to get the HPA controller, or this, or both...

You won't find one of these tbh....as rare as hens teeth.

It's either one of these or the HPA...not both.

Wow,great build thread;i`m fitting for myself a jap turbo td04 16t.
What about the rods?

OK,good to know :thumbs up: ;i`m looking to see the final result in power and torque ;)

PS.-what clutch are you using?and what about the flywheel?are you keeping the OEM DMF?

So am I :)

Sachs power clutch and oem flywheel.

So then...

The car is finally done, well almost....just a little heat shielding to do yet and a detail of the engine bay to make it look more presentable.

20150731 180814

Since the first couple of road and leak tests were done, a new clutch was required as it was slipping heavily under any sort of load. I was absolutely gutted to say the least but not long after a new Sachs 4 paddle clutch arrived, courtesy of Badger5. This was then mated up to genuine LUK cover plate and dual mass flywheel - retaining an OEM feel with a clutch to handle the increased power.

The car has since then undergone a further week road test before getting prepped for mapping, of which included the installation of my AEM Water Methanol Injection kit, again courtesy of Badger5:

My stack boost gauge and custom column pod were installed:

20150731 214357

It was then time for the car to be taken to Badger5 for a secondary inline DA-31 fuel pump to be installed and the ever daunting run on the rollers to see if all the hard work had paid off.

A full day at Badger5 produced good results and my setup achieved just shy of 370hp and 340 ft lbs torque.

Whilst the power figures are not anything to be compared with a Concorde, i'm not a numbers man constantly chasing power figures. Instead i prefer to go off how the car delivers power and the feeling it gives you every time you turn the key.

My vision for this build was more aimed towards trying something a little different and achieving good power with minimal lag for a bigger framed turbo, hence the reason for choosing a twin scroll. So i have done some rough calculations for you all from information i have sourced from other members etc:

My Mitsubishi TD05 Twin Scroll Turbo build - 370bhp
£1300

BBT K418T Hybrid equivelant build - 360bhp
£1625

TTE300 Hybrid equivalent build - 330bhp
£1850

I could have done it alot cheaper by going for an older Mitsubishi turbo but i wanted something unused/abused, of which gives a like for like comparison of the other setups listed above.

In summary, with the help and vast knowledge of AMW Motorsport, Badger5 and of course the well loved Tuffty, i have managed to achieve what i set out to do, which was to provide people with an alternative 'custom' approach which made the same or more power than the equivalent K04 hybrid setup for less money.

For those that may be thinking figures are a little disappointing for alot of work, my aim wasn't to wack a great big Garrett Turbo on and go for the biggest BHP figure. I can honestly say hand on heart, the choice i have made with the TD05 twin scroll was definately the right one and since spending some time driving it properly in conjunction with AITP the weekend just gone, i cannot keep the smile off my face every time the pedal is planted.

The boost delivery is not far out from oem rev range and gives a very aggressive delivery..... She's back with a hell of a nasty bite :)

I've always liked this car

I like this thread.

I like you new turbo

Results sound very good too :)

Just one thing - the thread title puts me off :whip:

Have you got any of the plots Bill usually produces Shaun? Would be good to see how the twin scroll turbo changes things with that fancy manifold.

Very good value if you got it all done for just £1300 too

I'm not entirely sure how that compares with plots from a k04 hybrid....would be good to see side by side for comparison.

It only cost you £1300?
Where do I sign for a tubular manifold ?

Not that its relevant to what it might cost anyone else of course
'pinch of salt' with the costs..... Labour rates for paying customers... Considerably more. Mates rates on this example.

Its "different" and done on a budget with help from mates etc. Credit where credits due, its different, and a diy creation.. Its got a punchy mid range torque for not massive boost

Very impressive to be churning out 340 of your torques

Thanks Bill.

The costs I have listed are parts only and don't include labour costs to do the job which removes the variation for discounted rates etc.

Clearly, fitting a k04 hybrid to a standard fit 'performance' manifold will be alot easier and cost alot less to do.

Already started my wish list....

I always end up spending more money speaking with Tuffty and yourself lol.

Seriously though, very happy with the way she drives.

the dyno plot comparisons you wanted to see..
Index: GN53 - LCR, rodded, BBT k04, B5 mani, wmi
N14UBY - your S3
J50ANB - lupo LCR, BBT/CR hybrid K04, B5 mani, wmi
CV51OLJ - Tuffty stroker GT35 etc ome ++ (lol)

Never said oem delivery....

I said not far from oem spool range for a bigger turbo :)

It is, err, quite a long way from oem in terms of spool also mate, by about 2000rpm!

I didn't say it wasn't good, but let's not make it out to be something it's not, which is early spooling! It's a bigger turbo, working later in the rev range exactly as you'd expect.

My bad...

Seems only 500rpm away from the k04 comparisons though..

In all honesty the story isn't quite finished yet either...the magic figure i want to hit is 400+ and the theory to releasing more power from my setup is to release some more flow via a performance intake, headwork, poss cams and making the remaining exhaust system 3" to match the dp. However, there will be no rush on this...I'm just going to enjoy driving it for a while now.

Looks to be only less than 500rpm behind the ko4 hybrids in those comparison graphs.

Not a bad outcome given how blind he went into this, shame power peaked not so far above hybrid levels. Those comparison graphs don't half highlight the drawbacks of standard cams tho

Tbf the turbo has more to give yet so in the not so distant future, a few tweaks should see it making 400+

given the compressor flow potential of the twin scroll, vs k04 hybrid and cams idea, where the hybrid gained nothing, I suspect the twin scroll could indeed gain as its not already flat out. Supplemented by equally decent flow 'other' parts

I suspect my build to be much the same, with similar figures.
A 'potentially' good turbo hindered by not so flowy things

Ah well...all in good time. Just enjoying driving it at the moment.

Knowing that its finally mapped in and safe is the biggest thing for me.
