Due to change my Company car in a few months and the list of what I can get has either a 1.6 TDi S-Line or 2.0 TDi Sport. Not sure which to go for. I prefer the look of the SLine trim but am tempted by the extra hp from the 2.0 even though it will cost a bit more in tax.
Any opinions?

For me , I would get the 2.0 sport. I currently have a 170 sport Quattro and is so fun to drive and has decent squirt and go. On a run at motorway speeds have made 60 mpg , oh and that torque! Forget bhp ,torque is cool.
That said just ordered a S3 cos I am now an old sod that gets cheap insurance and want some fun before I am planted on the ground.
The missus says it is my Menoporche!

Well it all depends on power or looks.
If you are young(ish) go for the s line with less power.
If slightly more mature go for a little more power over looks.
That sounds obvious I know.

Given the choice, I'd go for the 2.0 Sport. The Sport has plenty of kit and I don't personally think the S-Line bodykit actually improves the styling - quite the opposite, in fact. I'd also take the increased torque of the 2.0 over the 1.6 if being offered the choice of either.

In a perfect world I'd love the exterior of my car to have all the bells and whistles so that when it's sitting on my drive I get to look at how lovely it looks, but in the real world when it comes down to having say a more powerful engine, more optional features like ACC etc for the same or less money then I'll take the bits that actually improve my driving experience over the experience of people watching my car as I drive... just saying ;-)

If looks are more important to you and you do a lot of town/city driving I would go for the 1.6TDi.

I have had the 1.6TDi engine in several other VAG hire cars and have been very impressed with it, it still has a fair bit of "poke" and is no slouch just not as much fun as the 2.0 but may not be so much of an issue if its stuck in traffic a lot of the time.

I currently drive a 2.0TD-184 and it's a fabulous engine. Plenty of power and excellent low down torque. I had the 2.0TDI-170 in my previous A3 and when I had several test drives in the 150 it did seem to be lacking. My car was in the garage for the week last week whilst they sorted out a door creaking noise and they let me have a 2.0TDI-150 S-Line Saloon as a loan car. This to me was a horrible car mainly because of the much harder suspension and 18" wheels when compared with my Sport model on SE suspension and 17" wheel. Both my wife and myself found the car very uncomfortable on anything other than a very good A road. I really enjoy driving, especially through the country lanes but it was no fun at all in the S-Line. It also confirmed that I definitely made the right decision to go for the 184 over the 150.

Both cars were s-tronic and the S-Line did hold the road well but at the expense of comfort and not as good as my s-tronic quattro on it's SE suspension.

Haha, that made me laugh, I am nearly 60 and the S-Line does it for me. If I was the OP I'd go for the 1.4 COD and the S-Line, then you get the best of both worlds....

So much can depend on the type of driving you do and for what reasons. If it's mainly A roads and motorways and you generally use the car to get from A to B then a S-line is probably fine. But as a lot of my driving is long distances to go on holidays and then country roads when I'm there and country lanes as much as main roads in the UK and a lot of the time just for the fun of driving then the S-Line would be at the very bottom of the list, no matter what engine it was fitted with. But we all all different and have to decide what suits us best. I'm 67 by they way!

Yep my S-Line coupled with the 1.4TFSI COD engine is just right! I also had the choice of the 2.0 Derv in Sport trim or the 1.6 Derv in S-line trim. But then suddenly the 1.4 petrol was added..!

I tried the 1.6 and coming from a 2.0 Derv A4 it felt really sluggish. If the petrol wasn't an option I would have gone for the 2.0 A3 in Sport trim!

I have the 1.6tdi 3dr Sport S-tronic and love it. It has plenty power for around town and just done a run down south to airport and averaged just over 60mpg and I wasn't hanging about. The low down torque is great but it does level out around the 60 mark if you are hammering it. Having said that you'll be a motorway cruising speed in no time. I drive mine mostly around town or extra urban and struggle to get under 50mpg. Id go for the 1.6 Tdi S-line with sport suspension. The SE was too soft for me but the Sport is just right in terms of firmness and comfort.

I went for the 1.4 COD s line with standard Sport suspension rather than s line suspension. I don't know if it because the COD engine is a lot lighter but the set up seems about spot on to me. Very comfortable and not at all hard and the engine has loads of poke for the driving we do which it mainly short journeys down the A21 to TW and back with the odd motorway trip. If you drive loads of motorway I would go for the 2.0 TDi in whatever trim as I think this is a great engine too, just depends what you want out of the car
