Not strictly speaking a B8 specific thread, but yes you've guessed another Audi dealer horror story - this time with their seemingly unbeatable £50 MOT with protection.

Decided to take my A4 to the dealers for the first MOT, surely of course a three year old car with less than 25k miles on it will pass at the first attempt. My thinking behind it was the generous offer of a courtesy car, the £750 "protection" and so on.

The friendly phone call inevitably came to say that it had failed on back tyres - and they were "only" £160 a piece ( I just have standard plain vanilla 17" rims - none of the fancy S-line or run flat stuff...) Naturally this was about £55 more a corner than Black Circles for the exact same tyres, but now my car was up on the ramps with a failed MOT (bearing in mind that this cancels out whatever time you had left on the old MOT) and me in no position to argue. £450 later....I had a new MOT, a brake fluid change and two new tyres (which I've subsequently put on the front axle).

At least I got two free cups of coffee and a nice A6 Allroad 3.0TDI with 7 speed DSG to play with whilst it was in getting done...but it turned out to be a effing expensive test drive.... :sob::puke2:

I've only got my own stupid self to blame - but the moral of the story is.....if you are using Audi to do your MOT - for god sakes check your wear and tear parts before putting in for the test, and replace them yourself first. Don't give the b***rds any excuse to extract more cash from you.

You should get back in touch with the stealership if they told you that the failed MOT cancels out the time remaining on the current MOT, it is simply not true. And even if the car did not have a valid MOT then you are still allowed to drive the car to and from garages.

You have been poked in the bottom by Audi.

And why have you put the new tyres on the front ?

You want your best tyres on the rear .

and then there is the Audi price match on tyres if you can find them locally for less (which you would have)......sorry not wishing to rub salt in the wounds on a costly day.

For me, so far so good, my car had very good tyres and brakes when it went in, first time I've taken out the "£750" protection, I'll see what next year brings! Over the past 12 years, I've had all my VW cars MOT'd at VW dealer, I try to keep them spot-on and so far so good. Sorry to see that the OP fell into that situation - a timely reminder for some of us!

Yeah, best tyres on the rear is to prevent oversteer..............chance would be a fine thing in an Audi, LOL.

@StuBill I've heard about that, looks well worth ipa try for future guys.

An expensive lesson learned for the future, As you say.
A tyre needs to be pretty bald to fail an MOT. You should have looked around the car and checked tyres, lights, wipers, washer jets etc before presenting the car for an MOT. Takes a matter of minutes.
It's fairly obvious that tyres are close to legal and they should be replaced before taking the car for an MOT.
I take my cars to an MOT test station that only does MOT'S. They can replace the odd bulb but thats about all they do.
Hence they are not fishing for work and retests are free within 10 days.

Karl.

I'm sorry, but I'm short on sympathy for you here. Not because you should got them to match the price (you should!), but because YOU WERE DRIVING AROUND WITH TWO DUFF TYRES.

Please, just dont. You can afford a very nice and fairly new car. You enjoy and appreciate it (it's why you're on the forum). Taking a minute or so every week to check over your tyres isn't rocket science, and can save much more than just money.

Not disputing it.

And if you had read my post properly you may have seen that I did totally incriminate myself, owned up to my mistake, learnt my lesson, wearing the dunce cap, eat humble pie and I was not looking for sympathy. Merely to warn others about falling into the same trap, and didn't make the same mistake.

But there's always got to be a sanctimonious, self righteous gloating smartypants hasn't there???.....:gaehn: :blahblah1:

Sorry, but, no: You started a "let's have a pop at Audi dealers" thread, implying your "mistake" was to take it for an MOT to one, and saying that the "moral of the story" was to "check your wear and tear parts before putting in for the test".

I'm pointing out you should check tyres much more frequently, so you can replace them well before they're unsafe. You didn't seem to give a sh*t about that.

Oh, and well done for editing your post to add extra name-calling. Really big of you :)

On a slight aside I have had an MOT failure a couple of times where there has been damage to the inside of the tyre wall.
This isn't obvious until the car is up on a ramp so worth checking these as well if you can.
