Hi,

Hoping someone can help me on this as ive had a look online and cant seem to get anything solid on it.

One of my aloys on my A5 started to peel, got it looked at and refurbed at my local body shop for a mere £30. He got rid of the flaking as he repainted the whole wheel.

Problem is though, it doesn't match the colour of the rest of the alloys. after looking online I understand that you cant match the colour 100% but even then, his colour is slightly dark grey where as the factory finish is the bright silver which looks so much nicer and more premium.

Been trying to get a paint code on this, Spoke to audi directly as well and the best I got was 'W90'. spoke to a few wheel refurb companies but none of them can find that paint code. it is called the audi royal silver on this website http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/information/wheel_finishes

I've now got a guy who refurbishes audi wheels who audi themselves use to maintain their cars to come and have a look to see if he can do anything. Also got a few quotes from the wheel specialist in Manchester amongst other companies and they are around and above the £100 mark! big step up from the £30 I initially payed :(.

Does anyone know the exact paint code for these wheels, has anyone had any experience refurbishing them or even know of any good garages that can do it around the Manchester area?

Hope someone can help, has been driving me mad for the past few days.

Anyone please???? Seriously, no one ever had these refurbed????

Can't find a single post about it anywhere and theyre meant to be A5 alloys, how can there be no material on this.

I had my TT wheels done by a bloke from Stafford and he made a great job of them. Got him to take the tyres off so I could have the hidden valves fitted.

Silly question but can't you just get all 4 done in a colour of your choice? It will only cost you another £90.

I just like the factory colour a lot and is looks really nice on my a5 as it's phantom black. Also, I got it refurbished once from my local body shop and he changed me £30 but the colour is wrong. So it's basically that £30 plus the cost of a proper refurb.
I am starting to look into getting all 4 done now. Thinking of getting hyper silver for more of a contrast but just need to see how much that will cost.
Would prefer to get the one wheel sorted though.

I got mine refurbed in hyper silver by a guy that Audi use themselves. Turned out to be nothing like hyper silver.
My advice is to ask whoever you choose to see a sample of the finish beforehand so you know exactly what you will get.
Can't see you getting hyper silver for £30 a wheel though.

Yeah I've had a look at a place in Manchester called smart wheels. They've got good feedback and stuff but when I went, they were in a real rush and felt like I was being pushed along without been given much advice/help. Needed to decide on a colour, has a look at their very limited supply of colours even though their website said they can do all sorts of custom ones. They quoted me £60 per wheel for a bright silver finish and would need the car for 2 days. To be honest the colour didn't looks nice enough and was nothing like the hyper silver I was after. Price was fair but service was rushed so decided to stay way.

Going to AWR in Bury next weekend to see what they can do. Will update.

Had my RS6's done at AWR a few times, they do hyper silver and i think i paid £40 a wheel, that was on my A4 B6, just got a 2011 A5 2.0tdi quattro in Missano red, my y alloys are a anthracite/dark grey colour, im going to look at getting them gloss black, Had great service from them. I've heard good things about the wheel specialist in clayton but they are expensive in comparison

Hi pabs, that sounds reassuring!

Any chance you can upload some pictures of the hyper silver they did? I'm after the brightest and shiny one they do. Almost chrome but not as reflective.

This is hyper silver on my Touareg alloys on my B6,

That looks pretty sweet! I'm after something like that but a bit more reflective and more silvery metal. Hard to describe but I've seen a few videos of wheels that look exactly how I want. Here's a picture of one of the rims I've seen.

As you can see, they're almost like a pure silver with a high shine to them. Going to have to see if AWR do something like this in powder coat.

My local body shop can do something like this but they use wet paint instead of powder coat and I don't really want to go down that route as I've heard it is no where near as durable and isn't as long lasting.

here are a couple snaps I took at Smart Wheel Manchester with their 'brightest' rims they do. Mine look a bit dull as they are dirty but once cleaned, they were still brighter than what they could offer me.

For anyone who cares, I've been to AWR in Bury and have got a quote for all 4 wheels of £240 all in. They will need the car for 2 days to complete the job and is a full chemical strip and a 3 coat process.

Again, it seems like all the powder coaters have a very limited colour choice but these guys do offer 'Hyper Silver'. Turns out all hyper silver aren't the same but this is still one of the better metallic colours I have found so far.

It's not as super bright/whitish as the stock images I posted earlier but it definitely has that metallic shine and look to it which is what I was after.

Here are a couple snaps for those who are interested.

Its the one on the left.

Thats a good price and they do a good job, get some pics up when they are done

Another update for you guys. I went to another powder coating garage in Stockport called Diamond Wheels, It's owned by a fella names Steve and I read some decent reviews about the place too.

What made me want to go check them out was the hyper silver option that they do which is listed in the gallery section of their website. Looks like the real hyper silver that I was after. I went there and was greeted by Steve, his mannerisms kind of threw me off a bit. They quoted me £280 which is £40 more than AWR and when I asked him if he could beat them or match them, he was like 'That's the price and there's the door, if you don't want it then go to AWR' lol. At first I was like wtf... That's not how you'd expect someone to speak to their customer, he could have said no and stuck by his price in another way but didn't have to say it like that.

Anyway, after speaking to him for a bit I realised that's just how he speaks and I doubt he was trying to cause any offence. Showed him my car and he even helped me to take out a couple of rims outdoors and place them next to the wheels so I could have a better idea of what the colours would look like. Had a laugh at the cowboy job that the body shop did on my refurbed wheel and went back inside.

Now on to the confusing bit. I asked him about powder coating in hyper silver colour and he just went 'NO', there was a few seconds of awkward silence as I stood there processing what just happened hahaha. I was thinking 'you have it on your website, that what I came here for, what do you mean no?' lol.

So I asked him and he says it's because its too much hassle and there's too many issues with it. I was like fair enough... But then on the left of that wheel there was another one that looked pretty much the same if not brighter and I asked him about that. He said that's a similar process but he can do that one because he hasn't had any issue with it. I was fine with that, checked it out and took it outside to have a better look. At the end I decided it's exactly what I wanted, the bright silver has a very nice shine to it and is also sparkly and metallic and would contrast nicely on my black a5 and match the silver rs5 grill too. I said I'll go for that, booked myself in for the 9th of July and it's a same day process too so hopefully everything goes well.

Oh forgot to mention, the reason why these wheels are able to achieve such a shiny bright finish is because it is a powder base coat, followed by a hyper silver PAINT and then topped off with the powder lacquer. So basically it's the best of both worlds in the sense that you get the brightness and glossy look of wet paint but the durability of powder coat and that just sealed the deal for me.

Here are a few pictures for you guys.

This is what it looks like outside, The silver just looks amazing in person and has a sweet shine to it. Low res pictures don't do it justice.

The one on the right is the 'hyper silver' which he wouldn't do. But side by side, the VW rim looks just as bright if not brighter. Exactly what I've been looking for.

Close up, you can't see it properly but it has a metallic sparkle finish to it that glistens perfectly. Were not talking glitter wheels though lmao. Just a tasteful amount of metallic to it.

They also do vinyl dipping which I thought was pretty cool. Steve showed me around and even took me upstairs to show me these and some of the ones that customers have ordered which have been set aside for curing.

And finally, I did a LOT of research for a good wheel wax to use to help protect my newly finished rims. This is called the FK 1000P which is quite highly regarded as being very durable, long lasting and also having a nice glossy shine to it.

Bought a massive tub for £15 which I thought is a fantastic price just because of the sheer amount you get. should last me a lifetime. Will polish my new rims once they have been done and then I'll put up a few more pictures for you all to see.

Hi All. Final update on the perfect powder coat pursuit lol.

Got the car back from diamond wheels on the day, Steve was in a bit of a rush to go somewhere but he waited until I got there which was great of him. They had the car the full day and did the full procedure, acid strip, primer, coat, bake, wet paint and powder lacquer etc. The finish was better than I expected. The sun was out and hit the rims and you could see the sparkly effect and the bright shine, I had to shake Steve's hands on a job well done haha.

Honestly the pictures don't do it justice, you cant see the metallic effect it has very well but you get an idea. The finish was very good and smooth as you'd expect from a full powder coat. Showed some friends and family when I got back and they were really impressed at how good it looked too. in short, I absolutely LOVE them and I'm glad I was picky and looked around for almost 2 months until I decided on a colour and garage.

Here are a few snaps:

When I arrived to pick the car up, Steve parked it perfectly against the sun and seeing the wheels for the first time blew me away.

I got it home and took a few more closeups. Got a bit dirty on the journey back so took it to a car wash,
20150709 181119

Brought it home and did one final clean myself to prepare it for the wax that I purchased.
20150709 162219

Wax on and buffed, wasnt really sure if I was doing it right lol. Put it on, left it for about 15 minutes per wheel and then buffed it all off. Took me close to 2 hours from start to finish, definitely a few month thing!

Water beading test after I put the wax on.
20150709 190727

Tried to get a close up of what the metallic flakes look like, best I could do with the smartphone cam.

Been over a week now, wheels look great and certainly turn heads when the sun is out. Cleaning is a breeze thanks to the wax. Brake dust and usual road grime just wipes off clean with a tissue. One thing I realised is how easily dirt becomes noticeable on the wheels now. Since they're so silvery, even the thinnest coat of dust makes a difference. Guess it just means I need to clean them more often!

Thanks for anyone who followed this thread. Also if anyone is looking for a powder coat service around Manchester, I definitely recommend Diamond Wheels. Price is a little more but the finish is perfect, done in the same day and you get the usual 12 month warranty with it. 19" rims cost me £280. Just gotta be careful and not kerb them again! :D
