What have you done to your 8V today?

High AFRs with the box on!
Would feel happier with a map which brings them down rather than up on the standard which is quite high too...ponder ponder

Basically the box is making it run quite lean which isn't great. As standard it runs fairly lean anyway so the box makes it worse.
A revo map would have an AFR of around 13.6 which is generally accepted as a safer ratio to have as the extra fuel keeps the engine cooler and running better.

Oh ok then!!! :D

And the reason I'm thinking of taking the box off and going for a proper remap is....
dyno2.jpg

Decisions decisions......

Very decent power return for a box, and it does have the big advantage of easy removal, but there seems to be a difference in the torque numbers compared with some of the plots you'll see for a stage 1 map (always bearing in mind that everyone's using different dynos).

What are your thoughts on the AFR?

Edit - Sorry, didn't see your last post, we're on the same page re AFR

I guess it's all down to preference, how does it feel to drive compared to standard? What's the 'shove on the back" like?

For comparison purposes, here's a very recent remap plot

Scan 6

mmmmmmm............ Torquey!! :p

That graph looks good...although are the AFR's not a bit far the other way round now?? Was more expecting to bottom to around 12'ish but I don't really know lol.

I'm not convinced with the box, it doesn't really give a shove in the back just all hell breaks loose above 3.5k rpm which is great if you want to get to 120mph quicker... I dunno, I guess having the AFR's in the back of my mind isn't helping the boxes cause if I'm honest!!
I think that standard it feels a lot smoother too, which was one reason why I bought the car so we shall see!

Don't get me wrong for £400 and something you can do at home as often as you like its a brilliant bit of kit. Just not for me!!

Think i'll give Revo's 5 hour free trial a go and see what like, then if I don't like it get my stock file put back on or go the whole hog!!

@elpaulio Let us know how you get on with Revo as I am trying to decide which route to go myself. :)

The leaner you're running, the higher the temp, so I was happy to see the numbers where they are, given the extra boost and the load on the engine etc.

Wasn't aware that Revo offered a free trial, seems a no brainer to have a go and see what you think. I don't know anyone personally that's tried the stage 1 Revo map, but there are a couple of forum members who have it, and I haven't heard anything bad about it.

APR stage 1 has a couple of nice touches, like left foot braking enabled, and max speed limiter removal, although the limiter removal is more about bragging rights for most; would be hard to find somewhere other than an Autobahn where you could max one of these out.

I thought long and hard about going down the box route, and the DTUK offering was really tempting, but I'm very happy with my decision. It's brilliant. :jump:

Don't forget going the box route kind of protects warranty as we,, whereas a remap (even If flashed back to standard will still show td1)

Though I remapped my Golf GTI it was out of warranty. While I like the idea of remapping to get an extra possible 70 bhp I don't like the idea of my engine warranty being void. I may get it mapped after the warranty runs out in 2 years time though as I have the car for 4 years and not sure how long I'll have the car really. The only thing that worries me slightly is the turbo issue.

Max power is around 12.5 to 12.8 AFR.

Re tuning box, @Leo-83 wrote a very good post recently about robbing Peter to pay Paul re the newest settings on the tuning box.

Re shove in the back - Rick's map (Unicorn) does just that - he gets my vote ;)

I thought that was around the figures you would be looking for...but then with the quad exhaust I guess it's difficult to get an accurate reading with the wand thing they use.

I should have also commented that the box has the old files on not the newest ones, and I read @Leo-83 post and it was very good.
I should have known from the start that the box wouldn't be enough to satisfy me but had to give it a go.

Rick's map does sound like a good one to get, but Revo will probably get my pennies at their next sale due to the fact that the local dealer is 5 minutes from my house and has offered to swap back to stock FoC for me when it needs to go in for any work :thumbs up:

Now then, when's their next sale on lol

I fitted the stainless steel pedal covers. Only £50 from my local Audi dealer. I've seen them on eBay cheaper but didn't want to chance the potential fakery of ebay.

Also added the chromed 12v socket cover front and rear....only £5 each!

Yes they do finish off the interior don't they! Also the metal effect 12v covers are a nice touch. I got 2 for front and rear. Would never use the cigarette lighter anyway.

Went to renew/replace my rusty bolts with new ones but they sent the wrong ones.

The old rusty ones have a smaller collar and so the new ones won't fit in the bolt holes.
Topped off a day of things going wrong.

You do realise this still triggers td1 and swapping back to stock DOES NOT clear this! So you won't be able to take it back for work doing!

That's not what I have heard, there have been many people who have reflashed their stock file and gone in for warranty work succesfully.
The only one I have heard of that didnt work was the APR test Golf R - which was probably due to the fact it was plastered all over youTube et al.

At the end of the day, if you chip/tune/modify then your warranty should be taken as null and void and anything you do get from Audi should be taken as a bonus not a given. I am well aware of this and happy to go down the route based on this. I do not expect that my warranty will stay in tact but that doesn't mean I'm going to make it blatantly obvious to Audi.

What info have you seen to back up your claim?

As we finally seem to have seen the back of the snow and ice, I put took the winters off today and put the 18s back on.

Whilst I had it up on the jack though, I took a shufty at the rear suspension. I've read in several threads on here how the 1.6 TDI has torsion beam rear suspension rather than a proper independent setup. I did think this a little odd, as surely it would cost Audi more to design and produce a completely separate rear suspension to the rest of the range, just for the comparatively tiny percentage (I would guess) that will be spec'd with the 1.6 derv. Anyhoo... turns out it's a load of Horlicks, no torsion beams here.

Wrapped my grill and fog surrounds in high gloss black, attempted the chrome around the windows, but it just ended in me getting stressed out, it's such a faff to get right. Think I may take it to a pro to get them done. Anyway here's some pics:

When the weather improves I'm going to also attempt the splitter under the grill

Went out for some Petrol - a nice tank of Tesco momentum and then just went for a drive to no where and back and used 1/3 of it already :s3addict:

Got home and tried VCDS mods for the first time, added Oil Temp to all menus and the lock/ unlock beeps and menu. :)

Put a 3 sim in the Audi Connect but no signal at home, need to try it out when I'm out and then it looks like I'll need an alternative sim. :(
And in between playing with the dog and looking on here; to avoid :rtfm:been reading the manual.

@Brasso I'm using an EE sim and had to activate it first before it would work. In telephone settings set the wireless network up then connect to your phone it should be on the SIM cards manufacturers home page and just follow the instructions to activate.

Good work on the VCDS mods :icon thumright:

Quick QD wipe down and some Meg Edurance Gel applied to the tyres. Now it's ****** raining! Typical.

I use the same stuff on my tyres, smells lovely :)

How long does that stuff last (on the tyres)? The stuff I currently use is good but as soon as it gets wet it soon comes off!

Lasts a while like, all depends how much and how well u put it on, if u put too much on and don't take the time to rub it in properly it flicks up and sprays all over the side of the car when u put your foot down. It's the best stuff I've used but then it's the first gel I've used, always used sprays before which only seem to last about an hour! I find that with this stuff applied correctly the tyres look nice and black and shiny for a good week :)

I flit between Meg Endurance Gel and AG Vinyl and Rubber Care. AG tyre dressing is mince. At the moment I'm using them in combination. Put on Gel, let it dry and wipe round with damp MF. I then apply AG V&R care with a paint brush. Let it dry for a while and again rub excess off with MF. Stays on for weeks if the weathers dry. It can sling up on the body work if not dried or wiped/rubbed in.
Best for non-sling is Blackfire. Excellent stuff.
Just need to add some wheel sealant to my ever growing collection!

OK thanks :) Halfords are still doing 3 for 2 atm and it's in that deal http://www.halfords.com/motoring-tr...rs-endurance-high-gloss-tyre-protection-473ml

****** hell 3 bottles will last for donkeys!

:arco:Got a few essentials in there last week on their 3 for 2. Seems to be on all the time just now. Not normally a Halfords fan but stocks End Gel and AG stuff. You'll love the smell of it. Just remember to let it dry for 5-10mins then wipe off excess. If you get dry weather it will last a while.

lol you don't have to buy 3 of the same item :D Think I'll get 1 bottle of the megs, 1 clay mit and have to look for something else!

Ahhh that's good then, haven't been to halfords for years, might have to see what they sell these days :)

They have most of the Megs, AG and G3 ranges and some other stuff. Don't expect Poorboys, Auto Finesse or Chemical Guys stuff.
