ive been looking at a remap for my 2011 a4 avant 136 bhp.
i tried ringing a few places on saturday but only got through to one.
i asked about the custom remap and that wouldnt be a problem but then the lad i spoke to started saying i needed the dpf removing and something about an ep? valve removing.also id need a new downpipe or my existing one modifying.
he said if i got the remap and didnt get the other work done the car would end up going into limp mode after a few months.
im totally confused now,do i need all this other work if i get a remap?
cheers for any help.

Not sure how it affects all cars but I assumed the remap literally just tweaks made to the ECU of the car. Most of the changes he mentioned may or may not help but I know for sure that the DPF deletion is not a must as that is actually not legal to do anymore.

Maybe he also mentioned about an EGR deletion? Also not required.

he definatly said DPF removal and either a new downpipe or cut something out of the existing one and weld it back together.
he did say that about the egr though......it shocked me because the price quoted was over a grand............
i spoke to unit 9 remapping this morning and they explained it a bit so im thinking ill be driving up to them to get the work done.

You don't have to have the DPF removed if the map is done correctly. Removing the DPF will give you more potential for power and will improve fuel economy, less exhaust restriction and no regens.
The problem with a remap and keeping the DPF will really show up if you only do short local trips. This can cause issues with normal diesel cars, with a remapped diesel it will make it worse.
If you do regular long trips 20 miles plus then you should be good. Over a thousand pounds for that work is well expensive, you don't need a new downpipe if removing the DPF the existing one can be gutted.
If you are anywhere near Manchester than have a word with Rick as suggested above. He did my DPF removal and remap.

Karl.

Your car will fail it's mot if the dpf is removed.

Not if it's done properly' if the unit is still in place, and is cut open and welded correctly, hope another one of these debates arnt starting here, there's far to much scaremongering lately rapidly by Google mechanics, I even leave sensors intact and plugged in and the only way you would ever know is by removing the unit and cutting it open to find there isn't anything there,

As above my car has passed an MOT fine. It has the original DPF but is gutted. It passed the smoke test with no problems. I know of several people with diesels that have been remapped and have had the DPF's gutted and they have no issues.

Well I for one am glad to hear that. I wanted to do the dpf delete but kept getting told it's an MOT killer. I'll just get it gutted in that case!
Nice on Karl.

A good tuner will give you 3 options
Dpf delete and remap to suite : This will give a minor power increase but is otherwise fairly stock. The advantage is you will no longer have to tolerate any Dpf regen cycles.

Performance remap : Increased performance. Dpf and Dpf software retained.

Performance remap with DPF delete : As per 1 above but marginally increased performance compared to 2 above.

When considering Dpf delete you may also be presented with a replacement downpipe option or a cut'n'shut of the existing Dpf container in the downpipe.

Dpf delete will give you a sooty/smokey start up situation and it will blow diesel smoke on full throttle. The amount depends on how aggressive the tune.

On my old SEAT Leon PD170 I went with Option 3 with AMD but the torque was a bit brutal for the TCS so I would probably not do it again. Great in 4th - 6th but too much for lower gears as it would spin up mid rpm in 3rd in the dry.

Power went to 215bhp and torque was 320ftlb maybe more IIRC.

The Audi is petrol so will be getting a bluefin or shark sts once my ecu is unlocked for these home tuning tools.

As for DPF delete give you black smoke' also on full throttle' that's ******, only some does that and comes down to the quality of the map, we don't have this problem, fair enough uprated nozzles and so on

So hypothetically speaking if I wanted to do an egr deletion, remap and a dpf gutting on a 2012 A4 2.0 TDI Quattro would you expect there to be smoke and soot issues?

As the diesel saying goes....'no smoke no poke'.
The dpf catches the soot so if it's not there then it only has one place to go and that's out of the exhaust. Cold start and full throttle being primary examples. A remap won't touch cold start or idle/cruise conditions so any soot previously caught by the dpf will exit the exhaust.

Why do pre 2005 (ish) diesels and some newer smoke.....They don't have dpf technology.

Also if you town drive you will get soot build up. The next time you nail it you will get smoke with dpf delete. The 2nd or 3rd time you nail it smoke admitidly may be reduced.

Fair enough. Essentially what I was thinking and probably not for me.
Will stick to an egr deletion and remap. Cheers mate.

Hi Paul, I'm looking at getting a remap on our A4 2.0 TDI 143 p's but mainly do town driving would you recommend gutting the dpf? Would a EGR delete be advisable as well?

Thanks Chris

Slightly off-topic but why is EGR removal advisable and how is this achieved?

Pro DPF delete :) Glad to see people not scare mongering .

As per smoke, depends on the Map. Partner has EGR delete, DPF delete, straight downpipe (TURBO back), uprated turbo and Stage 2 at 240bhp (he hit the limits of the injectors untill uprated injectors for the 170 come on the market). And his only smokes full throttle and not much atall no plumes of black smoke like people will have you believe, the Map is very good though which is why it doesnt smoke!

Before the turbo on Stage 1 there was no smoke even with all the deletes(DPF, EGR, straight pipe).
All his work was done at Darkside.

I still have a DPF btw as I am show no go on my 170 :p untill next year probably when i want more power.

I got a Stage 1 Revo remap completed on mine, but I didn't bother with getting the DPF delete completed but that was my own personal choice.

The remap has made all the difference to the car! :thumbs up:

How long you run it now?
My REVO guy said they cause the clutch to slip on ours and I should hold of my map till my clutch is replaced (on 101k so must be getting there!)
