2.0 TDI oil pump / balance shaft failure?

Anyone know a specialist who will fit an upgrade kit in Birmingham?

Mine has started to make a slight tapping noise from the front around the pullys.

It's a 05 tdi blb so i assume it will be chain

are you after a pump conversion or a gear upgrade (from chain to gear)

I would have a conversion if I was you the chain was a common fault on the blb but the oil pump hex shaft was also common to wear out.

We are based in Sutton Coldfield

has anyone had the gears fail....after 8 months since fixing mine it seems its quite rare? guess im just lucky

haha....your pet hate!
of course not I did the full monty courtesy of KMB parts direct Sheffield. I took the sump off ready to do the conversion after the car broke down but found the gears had failed, absolute nightmare! the car has gone 12,000 miles since at a good pace and its a great ride!

So just to clarify, did the gears fail after you had fitted a new balance shaft or what type of work had you done before the gear failure?

If you remove the balance shaft module it crucial that you either:

1) Fit the same one back with the same idler gear and that the idler gear or crankshaft gear have not been loosened

or

2) If the conditions above are not met then fit a new idler gear which has a special coating which sets the correct backlash between the gears.

no work done before failure just raced it around a lot, the gears failed so while I was down there I uprated the balance shaft.

I fitted a new idler and helical spur gear, it was assembled hard in mesh and has gone well since the repair. in a way im lucky no more damage was done

A quick look at this this site shows that this is a well known problem so hopefully somebody will be able to provide me with some advice. After the low oil pressure indicator came on in my Audi A4, S-line 2.0 TDI, 2005, BLB engine, I had my breakdown company take it to my local indy garage. I have since been quoted 3,800 for repairs or 4200 for a reconditioned engine. Given that the car is only worth 5,000 at a push I wont be paying those prices to have it repaired. The garage have since offered to by the car off me for 1700 which would seem reasonable (they initially offered me 1000, only increasing their offer following a bit from sell the car.com).

I have also raised a complaint with Audi as this is would clearly seem to be a design fault. Audi have responded and asked me to take the car into my local dealership to allow them to investigate the problem. So my question is this, is it worth taking the car to Audi given other peoples experience, what might I get out of them? is a discount off repairs the best case scenario? my car has 98k miles, I bought it private at 80,000 and I've only serviced it with indy garages.

Maybe I should cut my losses and take the 1,700. Any advice appreciated.

I'm sure you could find a cheaper way to get it repaired than the £3800 you have been quoted. I'm guessing your turbo has gone so maybe get a reconditioned oil pump and turbo off ebay, then shop around for the best price to get them fitted.

Also after reading through every page on this thread I can't imagine you getting far with audi.

Worst case scenario take the £1700, but id ask around a bit first.

Also it might be worth speaking to the guy at KMB parts, google it. He was very helpful when I spoke to him, he also recomended lion garages for the labor who aren't too pricey compared to some indys.

So my saga begins... I wished I saw this thread before purchasing my 2008 Audi A4 2.0T S-Line. My oil pump failed without any proper warning, and did not have any symptoms that suggested that it was about to fail.
The sad part is that I took the car in to an Audi dealership (Audi Mississauga) for servicing (oil change and 145K service) a month prior to the failure. I took the car in at that time because the engine light had turned on. The diagnostic data
pointed to the camshaft. Yet, they felt that there was nothing wrong with the camshaft. I'm not sure if these were related.

The car is now at the shop (same Audi dealership that I mentioned in the above), and the repair estimate is about $9,500 CAD (5000GBP) to replace the engine.
I see all the people that are dealing with this problem, and all the hassle for a preventative precaution. How does this make any sense? How can an auto manufacturer allow this to happen? This is my 3rd Audi/VW, and it's likely going to be my last. The cost of the repair is not worth it based on the value of the car. I am so disappointed with all of this. How can Audi position themselves as a "world's leading brand in the premium automobile segment"?

I'm sure I can find a different local shop that will give me a better estimate for the repairs, but should I even bother? From everything that members have posted here, it seems like this is a time bomb - unless you make modification. My worst car experience - period.

Had my a4 avant 2.0tdi s-line 2007 (92000) BRE engine balance shaft and drive done by MB services Sheffield recently. Parts supplied by Graham at KMB parts, all were very helpful. I drove up from Coventry got there 8am was back on M1 homeward bound by 1.30pm. Ricky / Chris at MB honest guys with good knowledge. I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants peace of mind knowing the upgrade has been done.

I own a 2005 Audi A4 Avant 2.0TDI and had my hex shaft upgrade and timing chain done.
There was nothing wrong with mine but as Steve G said "peace of mind knowing the upgrade has been done"
Very good guys at Ring Engineering :) Highly recomended

Madphil - Sorry to hear about your problems. Sounds like the same problem but I would get it checked out. According to ETKA (the Audi parts catalogue), the early BPW (VIN No up to 8E -6-080 171) has the chain drive for the oil pump whilst BPW engines fitted to cars with VIN Nos after 8E -6-080 172 have the gear drive for the oil pump. Hope that helps.

I have just had the oil pressure warning light come on, luckily I was close to home and only just above tickover. I turned off straight away and pushed the car about 300m.

The car has a BPW code engine, but I'm not sure whether it will be chain driven or gear, not that it makes much difference, I guess it'll cost.

As my car is a Cab, it has a different VIN number code, being 8H17K01****, the H being model number I believe. Can anybody tell if this will be chain driven or spur gears.

Speaking to Audi today they could not say if check 13D7 has been carried out on the car. Was this only for the BLB cars or all chain driven ones.

Many thanks.

Your car will have a gear driven oil pump/balance shaft assembly and you can't read anything in the VIN number. If in anyboubt then you need to drop the sump, good luck !

Been and had mine done as a precaution heard and read too many horror stories...I used kmb parts Sheffield...again loads of useful information and Graham is a nice bloke to top it all...and took it to there recommended garage MB Services
...all done before 3 pm today...I have 2007 A4 Sline SE 2.0TDi (engine code BRD)

Thanks Paul. Car is booked in to garage next week. I wondered which sort of pump it would be purely for guesstimate on price. It's not money I want to spend, but otherwise I've got a very expensive driveway ornament. We'll see what damage is done next week.

You have the "cheap fix " option to estimate for, lucky you.
My own car is the BLB engined unit and that failed circa 4/5 years back at 68,000 miles. Back then the only fix available was by Audi (KMB repair kits etc didnt exist) and we paid dearly for the repairs.
That said my car is now 10 years old and on 110,000 plus and still going strong.

Unfortunately my faith in the car has gone, it's done less than 80k miles and seems to eat wheel bearings and now this. I was planning on changing it next year, for something a bit more practical that I can get bikes and a small daughter in. The wife's car is currently fulfilling that role, but she wants something smaller. I may now have her car for about a year whilst she get a shiny new one with mine as the px.

I'll get the car fixed, but I've no idea how much longer I'll be driving an Audi, though I may get one more topless summer.

I think I have been lucky, the turbo span nicely when checked and the engine seems ok. It's got a powermax balancer shaft repair, so fingers crossed for a bit more life out of the beast.

can anybody confirm if my new car is at risk its a 2006, chassis is wauzzz8e86a92105 BLB

There is a possibility...The BLB engine was the trouble maker...as it was the chain that gave way and the hex shaft wearing down...I have a BRD engine and had mine sorted just to be on safe side after reading lots of horror stories and Audi saying it could go.

cheers Gaz ha ,so can anybody tell me what set up it has??

If you're referring to gear or chain driven your local dealer should be able to tell you that.

spoke to Ayr Audi today and asked about any recalls which there isnt, and they also told me it has the gear driven set up.
so this is better yes?? so am i right in thinking i would just need to ask my local indy to check the balancer shaft for wear??.

Audi don't put their hands up to anything.

1 less problem as it's gear.

No need to check, just replace with a KMB Parts direct supplied remanufactured balancer shaft and new longer hex key.

Your old hex key will come out worn.

Noticed you spoke to Ayr Audi, I assume you are near Glasgow. If so I know of a garage in Clydebank that do the work, havent used them myself yet but they were recommended to me when I was searching for someone in the area to do it, still think you need to get the parts yourself though. The garage is http://www.a4audi.co.uk/

Hi, newbie here so bear with pls...

Just bought a 55plate A4 2.0 tdi sline about a week ago. Built 09/2005
Engine code - BLB 132134
Vin - WAUZZZ8E16A099896
Mileage - 141k
My engine is making rattling noise ONLY on idle,
no warning lights, no power loss, drives absolutely fine.
If I rev just slightly over idle, the rattling goes away.

Am I in trouble, should I be worried.
I bought it from a small dealer near stoke with a 3 month warranty.
Can someone check my vin or engine code on EKTA or somewhere to confirm I have a culprit engine??

Please getting really worried now!!
Advice and options would be greatly appreciated.

Thnx

I am actually getting mine done in july by KMB or rather thier sister garage M B Services and they have quoted me 560 for the whole job, that includes the parts which are around the 250 mark, oil and filter chage aswell, mines the quattro aswell so I think its a bit more work as the subframe needs to be dropped.
