Hi, has anyone used these cheap clay bars on eBay? Blue ones I have read that all clays are the same obv different grades.

I am new to the whole 'Detailing' thing and would like some advice on products everything from shampoos to polishes and waxes. BUT don't have a big budget, my car is sliver I don't no the real name for the colour.

I want her to have a nice mirror look :)

Forget eBay go on chemical guys uk website and order some soft clay it's not expensive and while you're at it get some clay lube chemical guys luber is pretty good

Medium or hard for newbie detailers is asking for marring just go for soft!

Or go to halfords and get the meguires kit that has lube and soft clay in the box

Don't buy 3m ones off eBay. Most if not all are fake and are like blue tack. Try the megs or autoglym kits. Bilt and hamber are a good make too and u can use some of theirs with water and not a detailing spray.

as above, I wouldn't get the ones off ebay...

Have you thought about getting a clay mitt instead of a bar?

they last longer, easier to use for a newbie and are also quicker!

Either way, with a bar or cloth, make sure you have plenty of lube on the paint, and do not use any pressure, let the bar/cloth do the work for you...if you put too much pressure on it, you'll probably end up with marring on the paint. If you get that, it'll need to be polished off.

Zaino clay, and Autosmart cloths are good quality items, also, as mentioned, Bilt Hamber clay only needs water as a lube, and they are great products from a company that's has some very nice times, but don't shout about it... and they make their own stuff!

I always like doing clay as the 3rd stage of my decontamination routine, the first 2 being chemical stages - tar remover and and fall out remover...

this helps keep the clay cleaner for longer, and reduces the risk of damaging your paint.

Thank you for the replies I'll have a look into everything you all said, clay mitt never knew you could get one? Any brand recommended? My cars a 2006 and never been clayed so does that make a difference to the grade of the clay?

Check out the farecla clay mitt. Got myself one a couple of weeks back and it's brilliant. Very easy to use. You can get it from Halford, think it's about £13.

I've found the best one to be the Autosmart cloth... it's the thin blue one.

Chemical guys do a thicker version, in 2 grades.... I have both of them as well... but they are not as good as the AS one (IMO)

If you don't want the bother of getting a hold of your local rep for Autosmart, you could always get the Farecla G3 mitt from Halfords... not used that one myself, but people that have seem to like it...

if you're new to all this, get fine grade clay/mitts until you are a bit more experienced... and don't use any pressure on them! (have I said that already?? lol )

I'll probs try the halfords one due to been easy to get and not much pressure check don't fancy paint damage :| thanks guys :)

Another vote for the Farcela G3 Mitt. A great bit of kit and much quicker than a bar.

Shampoos I like: Britemax Cleanmax, Chemical Guys Glossworkz shampoo. Currently using CarPro Reset as it's designed for the coating on my car (CQuartz Finest).

Polish would depend on by hand or machine. By hand I've used Auto Finesse Tripple with good effect.

If your car is silver as in your Avatar photo then you might be better with a sealant rather than a wax for a crisper finish. Try Finish Kare 1000p.

Wheel treatment, do you mean sealant rather than tyre gloss? If so you can't beat Planet Polish Wheel Seal & Shine. Great value and great results.

+1 on the FK1000P

a great product, long lasting, works well for silver and can be used on the paint and alloys...

put it on very thin though! :D

Does anyone have a good website that sell all those products I am finding it hard to get everything together if not some websites would be useful cheers

Cleanyourcar.co.uk is where I get almost everything from.

For the G3 mitt go to Halfords.

For a good shampoo that won't strip your wax I would recommend car chem 1900:1 Good stuff and smells really nice too. As for polish, I use meguiars ultimate compound, also good stuff. Only wax I've tried in a while is the dodo juice purple haze and although I have nothing to compare it to it's some awesome stuff, very very easy to apply and remove. I get all my stuff off eBay at pretty good prices. Hope this helps.

My car is black mate, if yours is silver and you look at dodo juice wax they do different types for different colours.

Meguires ultimate compound is lovely stuff! Works rly well but another one they do which detailers use is meguires 205 and 105 as it can get pretty bad scratches and swirls out

I think 105 is machine only but happy to be corrected.

I buy stuff from cleanyourcar, i4detailing or an EBay shop called Perfectly Cleaned.

I've just used a cheap clay bar ( blue stuff )

I found it to hard and not very easily folded. It removed some tar ect but left a lot of gunk on the paint. I have learnt my lesson.

So have you now got marring on the paintwork? If so not enough lube

No just didn't work to remove all contaminants from the paint work.

The megiaurs kit I used before was miles better.

Lesson, stay away from really cheap clay bars!

I must say the meguires kits are rly good actually
