Hi all,

Yesterday my 2009 2.0 TFSi Quattro would not start all of a sudden without any warning.
I had travelled approx 10 miles on the motorway and a couple of miles on minor A roads, absolutely no problems, no warning lights and no unusual noises.
I parked up outside a shop and turned the car off for approx 15 minutes.
When we got back in the car it just would not start. It was making a noise as though it was trying to start but no joy.
All electrics are working fine and I also checked the fuel pump fuse.
I left it for 20 mins and tried again but still the same.

Called breakdown recovery who came out, had a look around the engine bay, took oil cap off and got me to try and start again, still nothing. He also took the airbox apart and sprayed something across the opening whilst I tried to start it again.
His thoughts were that it sounded like a lack of compression and maybe it was timing issue or belt/chain. (he actually didn't know which one it had)
Two hours later we were recovered to home on the back of a flatbed truck.

So any ideas what the possible issue may be?

B8's should have the EA888 engine which has a chain.

I'd start by having a look at the plugs. Is it using lots of oil?

Thanks Silentbrown.

Not using lots of oil, and the oil consumption issue was fixed by Audi approx 18 months ago.
It is in my local indy now so waiting on his findings.

Looks like it might be timing chain, but not sure of full damage or cost until they strip down further.

Timing chain failure? Holy damage batman!!!! That's a worrying state of affairs. Is your car high mileage?

Does the 2 year warranty supplied after the oil consumption fix cover this?

I have no idea Razza, oil issue was repaired approx 12 months before I got the car.

Does the 2 year warranty supplied after the oil consumption fix cover this?

Just spoke to Audi who tell me that only the parts replaced on the oil consumption fix are covered under the 2 year warranty, not the entire engine.

I had an idea that might be their answer!!

Looking at google there's some mentions of chain tensioner failure on these engines. Maybe that's the problem?

Not good, if so. My desk is decorated with a pair of wiggly valves from an E28 M5 that landed me with a big bill about 25 years ago....

That's exactly what has gone, the tensioner. Aparently it's a known issue around Google and car forums. Everything can be fine and then one day you turn the engine off and when you go to turn it on again it just happens!

Mine went, well the bearings to the flywheel did, at 50k! The dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree while I was sitting at the lights snd the engine stalled. The only way I could get it to start was to hold the key in.

I hope it's not too costly repair.

Cylinder head came back from engine specialist this morning looking like brand new.
My local garage are re-building the car tomorrow, with the plan to be ready sometime on Wednesday.

Eek! Hopefully the bottom end and exhaust valves were OK??

My M5 had a chain failure, so only the valves that were actually open at the time got damaged. Tensioner failure basically put the whole thing out of sync so you have a matching set...!

Ok finally got my car back today, wallet is £1714 lighter!
However, the Emission Control Light has come on now ***, so back to the garage on Tuesday to see wtf that is.

I'm not a happy bunny (Easter pun) at akl and I don't have any desire to drive my Audi at the moment. I hope that feeling goes otherwise I may just get rid of the car.

It's the engine breather valve that controls the flow of air and OIL through the engine. £90+VAT. They may replace the sensor, although they didn't on mine.

Amazing how Audi tried to explain to me a couple of days ago that the issues are dealt with on a case by case basis, yet we all seem to be suffering from the same symptoms!.

Thanks Crazyfool. I will run that by my indy garage on Tuesday when I take it back.
Did you have the same light on yours when the chain tensioner went?

Is it ok to still drive it do you think?

Ok just scanned with my obd reader and Carista app and it comes back with: OBD2 - confirmed:
P0016 - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A

Having the crankshaft sensor replaced once the part arrives in from Audi, either today or tomorrow hopefully.
Garage say that timing is not out because car runs fine once started, the main issue is it takes a while to start (as in a few seconds instead of instantly like pre-repair)

Timing can be checked with vcds... Get that done

Thanks ruairi83, although finding someone near me in Manchester with VCDS is not proving successful so far.
I would have hoped garage would have checked it on their own reader anyway.

Might be worth trying @N8. I don't know for certain if he has VCDS, but I seem to recall he sometimes works in collaboration with @NHN, who is an authorised supplier. Can't do any harm to ask him.

Have you checked vcds map mate? Put a post on here for anyone with vcds in Manchester. Ask the garage if they have vcds as its very easy to see timing is off on it... Hope you get sorted mate and don't have to shell out much more money

Update - garage changed camshaft & crankshaft sensors over the past week but engine light still on and start up is still very slow.
So car has gone back in today for a couple of days. They are taking the front off again to investigate further. They want to check if any of the chain gear has maybe very slightly moved. They have also mentioned oil breather pipe as a possible issue??

Anyway, I have no idea but just want my car back to normal, as it was before the darn chain tensioner went 4 weeks ago!!

Knew I should have kept my B7.........

Got my car back, hopefully all now working!
Garage stripped front end down again and found the front sprocket had slipped by one notch/tooth - this was causing the slow start up and engine light to stay on.
Did my MOT whilst it was in and that passed nice and easy. Also stamped the service book as they have changed all oil & coolant, so at least no service required for 12 months.
