Hi all,

Apologies if its been discussed before but couldn't find it anywhere. I'm changing my current 1.2 SE 8v (s-tronic) and I'm trying to weigh up which to go for. The performance is fine in my current car, but obviously it'd be nice to have the added power of the 1.4 COD (heard so many good things about this engine). On the other hand, I could upgrade to S-line spec and stick with the smaller engine (now increased to 110).

I'm speccing xenons regardless, so I'm thinking I might as well stretch to an s-line. This brings me close to the price of a 1.4 SE with xenons (about €600 more than a 1.2 s-line ). I know it doesn't sound much but i'll be changing again in 2 years so cost to change is pretty critical. The dealer has indicated that the s-line would prob fetch more as a trade-in.

Need to finalise the order before end of week and I'm changing my mind every day :keule:

Any insight would be very welcome

Whatever the engine spec defo s-line!!

I wouldn't bother buying the same spec car again (SE) although the more power would be nice, have you thought about a 1.4 125bhp Sport? It would be cheaper than an SLine with more power and more features than the current SE? Just to throw something else into the mix ;)

If its a choice between a lower output s-line and a more powerful COD se/sport...then assuming the 110 is still responsive then I would go with the s-line ....you'll get used to whatever you drive ...what kind of driving do you do? urban/rural?...the COD is a cracking engine but I would sacrifice it to keep the s-line looks and spec (again assuming the 110 is good to drive)...for me the way it drives is a priority...I could live with an acceptable-good drive and good spec but not a poor drive with any spec.

Anyone driven the 110?

I thought about the 1.4 alright (had one previous to this as well), but the performance diff isn't worth it imho. We don't have a 'sport' option in Ireland anymore for some reason

ya cheers, that's what I'm thinking at moment. I do mainly short urban drives with occasional long motorway trips. Have never really found the 105 lacking, but I do like to push on every now and then so the power would be nice. I had a 170 GT golf a few yrs ago and still miss that kinda performance sometimes.

I've had my share of performance cars in the past (ah the good ole days) and although the 1.4COD isn't going to win any performance accolades ..it can still surprise me how responsive it is and does bring a smile to my face.

I test drove the 1.4 122bhp model and that was still a nice drive...had to be pushed a little but I would have been happy with a 122 and the s-line...the se/sport were never contenders as I wanted something that still had a sporty (ier) stance.

1.2 s-line ...1.2 s-line...1.2 s-line

1.2 s-line ...1.2 s-line...1.2 s-line

ya I love the look of the s-line. But then I've always had my current se on 18's and imho it looks pretty good (although would prefer the lower stance, etc).

Cheers for the advice, makes it easier to hear from someone with the COD that they'd go for the smaller engine. At the back of my head I'm wondering will I regret going for style over power, but you've settled that a bit for me.

I have the 1.2 S-Tronic, but a Sport.

Mainly urban driving, and have no issues with how responsive it is, dealership gave me a 1.4 S-Tronic saloon for the day to test drive, can't say I noticed a huge amount of difference between them, well not enough to convince me to get the COD.

I have done a couple of longer journeys and it cruises along quite nicely at 8... I mean 70..... :)

Personally I would choose better spec over an upgrade in engine purely due to mainly urban driving, found it difficult to justify the extra cost of the 1.4 CoD - so it comes down to what you prefer, a bit more performance or a few more 'toys'....

But to put this into context, I have only got my previous Merc A Class 1.5 with a CVT gearbox to compare to so anything after that was an improvement.........

I had a 1.2 tfsi for 3 weeks as my car was delayed, I also drive a number of Leon's,Golf's and Beetles with the same engine and never found it to be lacking. I find them pretty nippy at town speeds and like what has been said it will cruise on the motorway no problem. On a separate note the 1.2 tfsi dsg Beetle is one of the most fun cars I've driven, even the exhaust pops and bangs. Im pushing other half to get one to I can blast round it form time to time ;)

The 1.4 COD is a great engine, it has decent performance and gives me a lot of confidence when overtaking which is useful for my route to work - single carriage A roads with slow traffic (buses, tractors, grannies etc.). Fuel economy is way better than my old car, a naturally aspirated 1.4, but it's nothing special - I'm averaging about 38MPG but I've only just done 1000 miles so it could improve.

If I had to choose then I'd go for S Line, I love the interior and 90% of the time I don't use the engine to it's full potential whilst sat in city traffic. If I had the same budget and was ordering again, I would be tempted by the 122 1.4 and then add a few other extras.

Just looking at the 1.2, it has much better performance than my old 1.4 Kia Rio - it's 0-60 was around 13/14 seconds! So I'm sure I would have been happy with the 1.2 too.

seems everyone's leaning toward the s-line. Thanks for all the feedback!:thumbs up:

I was thinking I'd regret not going for the extra power, but I suppose the extra style and nicer interior should outweigh it.

Before the S3 i had the older COD engine (140) in an S-line A3 hb, my wife has an Ibiza with the older 1.2 (105) and didn't really notice a difference between the 2. Obviously the Ibiza is a lighter car but the extra 35bhp wasn't a huge improvement. Both engines are good but not sure if worth the premium. COD engine was far less economical than i'd hoped too as it was meant to be a sensible option.

Luckily for me, the sensibleness didn't last long :)

Si.

Engine differences aside -

If you choose the 1.4, you will also get the grown up rear suspension option.
The 1.2 gets the torsion beam rear suspension.

The suspension differences I thought only applied to the golf not the a3. As for the performance not being much different to the 1,2, try overtaking in 5th or 6th and you'll know which engine is better...

Depends if you want the luxury of the S Line or the improved performance of the 1.4. Only you can decide.

Or save a little bit more cash and go for both? :)

I awaiting delivery of my 1.4 cod. It was a better option for me due to tax. However I spent so long deciding on sline or sport as I was going to have Xenons regardless. I really feel now you have to have drl the halogens in the day being on kill the car for me personally.

In the end the sport won and I put the cash on some extras. I decided I loved the look of the sline but 12 months down the line I think I'll enjoy the ACC, stronic, comfort pack more than a basic sline. It's a trade off and I still ponder it, but I think for me it was the bette option. I also didn't want an sline with the smallest engine, just to me felt at the lights everyone would take me! Good luck and do what feels right!

Good choice, you'll have the refinement with the torque and economy similar to that of a diesel. However you might have to look at the rev counter to check the engine is running...

I don't know about the other 1.4 or the 1.2, but I really like the noise the COD produces too. It is pretty much silent when cruising or stopped (with the engine on). But when pushed there's this nice deep growl, which I've not heard from a petrol before. Probably not much to make you want the COD, but it does add to the pleasure when driving.

I'd say it's lovely as even my current 1.2 has a nice rasp when the turbo kicks in. I've actually been driving it in sport a bit more over the past few days just to help me decide whether I really 'need' the added power. As cuke2u pointed out, its only really at higher gears that its lacking a bit. Its still a pretty good engine though, which is why I'm struggling with the decision.

ya would like that alright, but just can't justify it as I'll be changing again in 2 yrs and would hit me harder then :(
