New to Audi and looking at an A6 3.0 TDi

Hi all,

I have been looking for a replacement for my Renaultsport Clio 200 and looking for something a bit more luxurious. Been looking at a number of options and never considered a diesel as ive always been a petrol head and still want something with a bit of poke, however looking at the 3.0 dervs they seem to offer a lot of potential with a simple remap.

I've found one on Auto Trader which isn't too far from me, seems pretty good so would appreciate some advice?

Initial thoughts......consider adding Le Mans to your search criteria for a nice spec and include privacy glass.

You may not be a fan but at least test drive a tiptronic version before getting a manual.

Thanks for your input. Le Mans is out of my price range I think. I was looking up to 6k for an A4 but have my heart set on the 3.0 in the A6. S line is the spec I've been looking at an this seems pretty good value. I would consider the tiptronic although I've always preferred manual.
 
So that one sold before I manged get to it an there isn't much else around under the 100k mark in the s line trim. However having a look at the options going just over the 100k mark seems to be substantially more. I always had 100k as my max but would you say it's not much of an issue going over (service history depending)?
 
I've just recently bought an A6 3.0tdi Avant. I'm the same as you and have always been a die hard manual driver. However the tiptronic box is actually quite nice once you get used to the 'lag'. I've surprised myself how often I find myself in the D or S position and just being lazy, in fact I would go as far as to say I rarely drive tiptronic now, generally only when pulling out on busy junctions.

Do bear in mind that they are big old cars and jumping from a Cliosport they might feel pretty slow. That said the biggest problem I find is you're at/above the speed limit without realising it!
 
Thanks Malfus! I've thought more about the box an think I would prefer an auto, especially after my experience with the chocolate boxes on the clio. I've had my fun in a bone crushing ride so looking forward to something a bit more relaxin! Seen a Le Mans for sale with 136k on. Just worried about such a high mileage??
 
136K on a 3.0TDi is nothing the engine is just run in! I'm on 200K and the engine and box is fine, I had an early car so need replacement injectors other then that it's all been fine.

I would say one thing I'm about to have my autobox service by these guy's. http://www.mackie-transmission.com/ Audi say they are sealed for life but Audi's life is 7 years & 100K miles.
 
Thanks mate, Ibe found a 56 plate Le Mans edition so should be the later engine? (Anyone confirm) will take a good look at the service history to see what it's had done.

So I'm still looking for the right one, had a look at one in Bimringham and it was a right dog! It was a 5 hour round trip so I spoke to the dealer before I left to ask about the condition ect, said it was very clean and a good example and FSH. So after a long drive I got there, only to be disappointed. All the alloys were in terrible condition, the rear near side light was smashed, there was a 6x2 inch scrape on the rear near side door, there was a rip in the passenger seat all of which are not clear on the pictures and to top it off about 4 cigarettes worth of ash in the ash tray, oh and it the lip on the discs was redicoulous!

So my search continues...

I'm struggle in to find a good 3.0tdi in the right s line spec but have seen a few 2.7tdis which look ok. Question is, will I regret not getting the 3.0??

I'm going to have a drive of both to see what I think but any opinions are welcome. Also I'm ideally looking at the Tiptronic.

Right, bit of an update to my last post in here. Now I'm used to it, I now pretty much drive in tiptronic as I mainly drive A/B roads. I've found I can have more 'fun' in tiptronic but still return a better mpg than just sitting in 'D'. The only time it sits in 'D' now is long motorway journeys.

Don't get a 2.7, you WILL regret it, well maybe not if you stay out of other peoples 3.0! Stick with the search, it took me 3-4 months to find the right car and even then there were a couple of cosmetic issues that need sorting. I did end up going over my budget as I wanted the Avant and sub 100k but don't regret it at all. The right car will pop up but be prepared to move quickly, I checked Autotrader every morning, every lunchtime and every evening. The one I found was contacted within a couple of hours of appearing on Autotrader, viewed the next day and a deposit left the same day.

EDIT: As B5nut said, I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage. My 1.9TDi A4 had 130ish k on it when I bought it and was still going strong at 180k when I swapped over to the A6. Apart from the initial suspension problems it only really needed service parts to keep it running sweet.

As above hold out for a 3.0 TDI, There aren't that many round so to find one on you doorstep that is what you want, you will be very lucky. A 5 hour round trip to look at a car that was not described correctly is very annoying, I was fortunate when I bought my A4 it was private and the guy was very honest, he was pointing stuff out that I had even noticed.
I was searching Autotrader, gumtree, pistonheads and Ebay every day for about 2 months, the car I bought came up on autotrader on a Saturday and I saw it and put a deposit on it Sunday.

Do not right off the 2.7 mate. I have one and it is running 270bhp and has no trouble passing the 3.0 and is way better on the fuel as well.;)

Jeepers, how have you managed to get 62.6mpg?? I have a 2.0TDI and don't get near that!
 
I can get that on mine if I reset the trip and then drive down a hill. I hope you aren't going to try and say that is a real world figure for a car that size with a 2.7 TDI engine. Have you actually tried filling it up tank to tank and recording the fuel economy.
My wife has a 1.4 diesel 75 bhp Yaris and that only just achieves that kind of economy on a day to day basis.

Looks like the best Audi engine is a 2.7 tdi or it's Jackanory .

Just not realistic for a car of that weight .

Certainly not for a long journey .
 
Be careful when you remap. The ZF6HP19A auto box is only rated to 500 Nm, ref a conversation I had with ZF. Also listen for timing chain rattle when starting from cold. Usually it can be cured (not always) by having the upper R/H timing chain tensioner changed.
 
This was not driving down hill guys.

It was my average over a return trip to Blackpool for work from Edinburgh. Aye if you boot the tits out of it it will sink the fuel but this was just cruising down late morning and the return drive was early morning.
 
Sorry, but that is utter bull! The 2.7TDI officially only does about 44mpg extra urban and my later 3.0TDI will at best return about 49MPG if I drive like Miss Daisy is in the back!

I would always recommend the 3.0TDI, and the earlier 233bhp model will be comfortable at a remap upto about 290bhp with an auto box. I have the manual though and its running 320bhp with no issues at all. Mileage wise, the timing chain can get rattly at about 120,000 miles, but is easy to tighten slightly to cover you for a while. By no means does this happen to all engines though.

Just buy the best you can and maintain it like it's your only child!

I can honestly say with my hand on my heart that was the figure I returned. When I first got the car it would do 57mpg but since the stage 2 map it has gone up slightly driving just the same way.

This was a post about which car the guy should got for and I gave him some info that might help him choose a slightly smaller engined model that will be cheaper meaning he could maybe get a better spec.

And not an excuse for twats to have a go at me.

I do like these statements, 'has no trouble passing the 3.0'. Of course it doesn't, it's putting out more bhp than the 3.0 because it's been remapped! Remap the 3.0 and it's slightly different story.

That said, if that's genuine mpg it's pretty impressive, would like to know the actual mpg not the DIS reading though, because let's face it, it's not the most accurate way to measure the mpg. Not even my Shark remapped 1.9TDi FWD A4 could reach that.

I am sure the dis is being optimistic but I cannot see how a 3.0tdi quattro auto can be more fuel efficient than a 2.7tdi fwd manual.

Aye I know a remapped 3.0 will be quicker but I will soon be putting out more than 300bhp so it will still be swift.
 
I said you were lying, because you were. Perhaps you didn't mean to, and you believe the DIS to be accurate, but everybody would buy one if this were true! If you do return 50+mpg on average, you must be getting about 1,000 miles to a tank of diesel! A stretch to believe I assure you!
As far as being a keyboard warrior, I'd tell you exactly the same things to your face. I'm not a 2 faced cretin! I worked at an Audi franchised dealership for 5 years and am pretty sure I know what I'm referring to regarding these cars. Accept my apologies if you feel offended, I assume you I am only trying to help this poor potential buyer out.
 
I do not believe the dis can be out as much as 30% and if anything it should be Audi that you should be calling liars and not me.
I get 700 miles from a tank just with general driving and more when I am on along drive.
These sort of figures are not out of this world as JC proved on top gear with an A8.
That's is all I have to say now and good luck to the op with his search and don't be put off by the 2.7.

Yeah, very unlikely the 3.0 will be more fuel efficient. I know mine isn't, I'm lucky to get 30mpg but I only really drive A and B roads. Hell after a spirited drive the other day I managed a whopping 14mpg on the DIS!

300bhp sounds nice, my 3.0 is the really early 225bhp so best I can hope for is 280ish.
 
Fact is, the 3.0Tdi 240bhp is more frugal as a manual car (which mine is) than an older engine 2.7Tdi 190bhp. The government figures are shocking! The remap on yours must be amazing to give those figures. If so, I'd like mine done too!

Basically, my personal advice to anybody would be, buy the 3.0Tdi and preferably the manual gearbox then remap it sympathetically and professionally. Once done, maintain the car to the highest possible standards and use decent quality diesel in it. Should this be heeded, the car will look after you for many happy years and thousands of sublime miles!
 
I have just joined this forum and I am looking to buy, I have found a 2009 A6 allroad in stunning condition, full main dealer service history thou the service intervals are the longer type.
Its in stunning condition and any potential air suspension problems don't bother me too much.
The issue is it has 150,000 miles on the clock....am I mad to consider this.....
 
I'd say you should be ok at 150k to be fair. The important bit is the main dealer history. Just have the timing chain checked for tension and noise. I'm Sure the price asked is reflective of the mileage, and part of the reason you want that particular vehicle, so bash on, and enjoy I say!
