Hey all,
I've noticed a few threads on here about engine oil and the best to use etc.
But does anyone have any preference on an oil that works well dampening out the sound of the engine, of course I still want the correct oil and I know its a diesel and its not going to ever sound as quiet as a petrol but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on certain brands, I've personally heard Mobil 1ESP is pretty good? I've done 120k now and she isn't getting any quieter these days!

Cheers,
Dan

I always use Mobil1 ESP, never needs topping up between services, sounds fine.

I was given some Shell equivalent to try by the Shell rep, it needed topping up before the next service so presumably burnt away. Back to Mobil all was well again.

A 507.00 5w30.

Better than that are ester oils , Millers Nanodrive CFS , Red line , Fuchs Pro S , Gulf Competition and Motul 300V but they are £55 - £80 for 5L.

me too....TPS genuine oil+filter

Castrol/quantum is overpriced very average product. Shell is much better product (gtl base not mineral) for similar price.

Igor could you expand on that , gtl base etc.

I understand a 507.00 has group III , IV and V base oils.

GTL - gas to liquids
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_to_liquids

507.00 base stock is mainly group 3 HC with addition up to 25% PAO (mineral base stock)-
Castrol 5W-30 group 3 (the cheapest mineral base stock) around £ 40 4 l can
Quantum 5w-30 group 3 £35 5 l can
Mobil esp 5w30 group .£45 5 l can
Shell 5w-30 has GTL base oil so group 4 £44 for 5 L can
Petronas Syntium 5000 AV group 4 £ 25 4 L can

for me Petronas or Shell is one to go for if 507.00 is required

If Shell is a better product, why did it burn away so easily?

Did you use old spec based on HC or new on GTL?.
All 5w-30 504/507 will burn easily one faster other slower. They are eco oils main task is to protect enviroment rather then engine ....I used castrol stuff before in other cars and one thing was very common -sludge.
Try Shell helix ultra av-l 0w-30 504/507 i will not burn so easily.

Exceeds 504 507

How so when the total base number is 5.2mg KOH/g when it should be 6.0 - 7.0 mg KOH/g ?

Vw aproved

Dunno. I don't run long life intervals anyway so it's no big deal to me if it starts off at a lower TBN.
