Hi all, first time poster :)
I have a 2010 A4 2.0TDIe (136) with start/stop. When I stop the car at traffic lights the start/stop will kick in and the engine shuts off but after approx 30 seconds it restarts by itself (no clutch movement). Is this normal?
I've tried a few things like turning off the heating/AC and putting the hand brake on, but it will always restart itself without driver input.
Anyone have any similar experiences?

If you pump the brakes that will turn it on to be honest mate i wouldn't worry to much about it i can go 3 months without seeing mine then all of a sudden poof it works

How long are you driving before you get to lights etc?

Generally, the car will not engage stop/start until the engine it up to a pre-set temperature so if you are early into your journey then it probably wont kick in. Also, the residual charge in the battery is checked by the computer before and stop/start wont be engaged unless the battery can take the load (running electrics in the car etc) after frequent stop/starts will cause it to keep the engine running at lights. It gets worse in winter too as it's colder so takes the car longer to reach temp, the load is higher due to lights and heaters and the batteries efficiency are storing charge is lower.

It's probably also better for your starter motor if it's not always firing off, despite what manufactures claim.

There is a button on the dash that should form part of your pre-flight check, after engine start, before chocks away ;)

Thanks all!

Opelfruit, it is engaging start/stop but what I was wondering was is it normal for the engine to restart by itself after 30secsonds? Its not a big problem all in all, just satisfying my curiosity :D

I hate it. Hate the autostop when you get out the seat too.

I know it saves me the price of a pair of jeans a year on RFL but I would rather pay that and have a car that I can tell when to stop the engine.

Tried coding it out without success............

That is normal, the start stop is based on a number of conditions battery level and internal car temperature being two of them and if the car detects the battery level to be down to a certain point it will restart the car as well as if the internal car temp falls to much it starts the car to maintain the set temperature.

Thanks Anthony, good to know!

Ive noticed the same with mine lately. I think it's just down to the outside temperature change, the car trying to keep the cockpit temperature regulated and the engine temperature.

See what it is like when the weather is milder.

Crazyfool I think you're right, now that I think about it my car restarts (by itself) a lot sooner these days than it did during the summer.
