I came back from a 70 mile round trip and parked up in the garage. Suddenly realised there was smoke coming from my car - underneath and from under the bonnet.
Drove it straight out of the garage, and got my valuables out.
I could see an orange glow under the bonnet, and rushed inside the house for a fire extinguisher.
When I opened the bonnet, it burst into flames, but luckily I managed to extinguish the fire.
The car is now back at the dealers, and the damage is extensive. They have warned me it will all be a slow process, but I have a replacement car to run about in.
It's a 62 plate Audi A3 Quattro with 31,000 on the clock, so still under warranty.
Has anyone heard of any other cars going on fire, and if so, what was the outcome/timescale for action from Audi

That could have been really bad, I'm glad your ok and hope all is sorted for you soon, what would have happen if you did not see the smoke I dread to think.

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I keep thinking if and but, but I was really lucky about the timing! I was been down in Birmingham, last week and up in Aberdeen on Saturday, so the thought of it happening on the road would have been bad, but the thought of the whole garage burning down, was scary too.
Just got a very sick car! Not sure I want it back if its repairable. :aggressive:

Yeah don't think I'd want it back to tell the truth

I REALLY hope it was vehicle related, and I say this because I had a similar issue years back, not with an audi but upon investigation it turned out to be a rag that I know had been left under the bonnet by the mechanic at the garage but unfortunately couldn't prove anything

Great to hear your all ok and no damaged to the garage/house ect !

Hopefully dealers can shed some light on the issue and see what caused this and maybe issue a re-call if it is vehicle related?

I had this on my old car and there were a couple of other cases about, one of my coil packs decided the car was cold so it decided to light itself in to a small contained fire under my bonnet, luckily I saw the smoke straight away and unclipped it from the loom and disconnected the battery.

but that was a 56 plate and about 6 year old at the time

gearboxes are made of magnesium alloy and are known to burst into flames ,seen a 60plate (when it was new) with less than 100 miles on clock completely destroyed under the hood due to this .

Audi are saying it is not a technical issue................they are suspecting rodent damage!! Now in the hands of the insurers.

When I got the fire out, there was a hot spot that stayed hot for ages. I am not technically minded, but surely that is not right either.

We have such bad luck with cars!!

Good to see you're quick thinking saved damage to the garage and you. However, schoolboy error opening the bonnet which just lets more air to fire ;)

So many possibilities. Whilst reading down the page I have heard of cats sheltering under cars in the engine bay. I suppose rodents are possible too. Did you report your 'hot spot' to Audi when you left it with them? Will be interesting to see what was damaged to cause a fire.

Fingers crossed they write it off especially as you don't want it back.

I know that, but its a bit difficult getting the fire extinguisher to the seat of the fire without opening the bonnet........at least it meant the bonnet paint was not damaged either.

Insurance assessor is looking at it today.
