Fines of up to £10,000 could be imposed on people who allow smoking in cars carrying children.

There will be a £50 fixed penalty or five penalty points on the driving licence for anyone caught smoking in a car carrying children and failure to prevent smoking in the vehicle.

The maximum £10,000 fine will be paid by people who end up in court having failed to take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent others smoking in cars with children.

Details of the new law are expected to be unveiled by ministers in December and could be in force by October of next year.

:applaus:like the idea of that, the thought of children inhaling smoke makes me cringe:applaus:

I'm not a smoker, and I agree that it's not good for the kids, but once they get home they will be passive smoking, so unless there were to be a total ban, where's the point? Whether they inhale 20 a day at home, or 15 at home and 5 in a car, the kid is still inhaling.

Smoking around kids feels wrong, i smoke and wouldn't do it. Even around non-smoking adults i am always concious of where the smoke is going.

My parents have always smoked with me in the car and around me in the house, they try smoking as far away as possible from me but I would have to argue that smoking in the car with children (presuming the windows are down) is far better ventilated than smoking in a house with children, although I suppose that's much harder to enforce. They often try to quit but unfortunately they have been addicted to this legal substance since their teens.

I don't think people should smoke around kids, although I'm opposed to the majority of recent laws involving fines as it's clearly more tax for the poor and vulnerable.

Stats on pollution caused by businesses (whether the true stats are on record or not, in most cases not with nobody enforcing the law) will have a bigger impact on future generations.

Smoking around me never did me any harm! Just another 'nanny state', big brother, money making load of old b0ll0x, once again aimed at the mmotorist.
IMO of course!

Whilst I totally agree with this, it'll just be another 'ticket for middle lane hoggers'...

They will not be able to enforce it, and it'll just pee us off even more because it's law and no-one is enforcing it.

whilst enforcing this for kids is great and a perfectly valid reason. They should implement this for simply smoking while driving, and the danger of that itself. To me it is no different than drinking while driving or being on a phone while driving.
