Hi,

I've just started using an SD Card containing a bunch of music with my A3 - before putting the music onto the SDCard I spent some time making sure all the metadata was correct - every track has album, artist, song, song number, an embedded 500px cover image and a bunch of other metadata (I used Musicbrainz to fill in some missing info on a few tracks).

Everything has been picked up and shows the cover art etc. And if I manually browse say via artist or genre then all the expected tracks show up.

However, if I browse via album then all the tracks for an album show up, but the order of the tracks is not correct - they appear to be all mixed up (despite each file having the track number in the metadata).

It gets worse again if I choose to use the 'album browser' - despite looking very cool, the album browser shows albums multiple times and when one is chosen it only plays one track from that album. I've checked the metadata for album name and it is identical and correct for each of the albums I've included, so I'm at a loss as to why it's behaving like this.

If I browse by folder and go to an album, all the tracks are played in the correct order.

Any suggestions most welcome :)

Yeah album browser has never worked for me either. Exactly as you describe, a very neat looking row of album artwork, each of which is a song rather than an album.

That aside, my songs do play in the right order. Is it perhaps sorting on filename rather than metadata? Pretty sure all my songs are labeled 01 - Song 1, 02 - Song 2… etc.

Glad to hear it's not just me! I'll try numbering the actual file names and see if that fixes it.

Works fine for me without having made any effort to perfect the metadata. That's why I was curious how you do your browsing.

There are three ways I've tried browsing by album:

Browsing by the file structure - this works fine
Browsing by 'album' (it's one of the view options you can also view by artist, genre etc) - this method works in that it displays all the songs in album correctly, but it fails to display them in the correct order for me.
The 'album browser' - this is an option on one of the four buttons when viewing the media centre - it gives you a very cool looking 3D carousel with 3D representations of your Album covers... however for me (and mjcourtney) this doesn't really work and just shows one song rather than the whole album.

I also have the same problem as jerodequin. The SD card came straight out of the RNs-E in my previous TT, already loaded with MP3s, where it worked perfectly. In the S3 browsing by file structure is OK but the album browser shows multiple copies of the same album, track by track, and all mixed up together with other albums. I agree it is 'cool' but not if it does not work properly. Either we are all doing something wrong or there is a software glitch.

The album browser view works fine for me now with a 32GB SD Card full of MP3's.

When I first used it I had lots of multiple albums - I used MediaMonkey to tidy up the tags. I don't think that the MMI respects the "Album Artist" tag, any albums where the songs have the same "Album Artist" tag but different "Artist" tag show up multiple times.
I set all of the Artist tags to the same as Album Artist and for any compilations I set Artist and Album Artist to "Various Artists" and that sorted the view in the car.

This sounds like a logical answer. I cannot try it the moment as I am abroad. Is MediaMonkey freeware from the web? Does it automate all the editing you have to do or is it a tedious album by album, track by track editing job?

Yes, MediaMonkey is free. It's a great bit of software and it's really quick to modify a lot of tracks (although if you have a huge library it still takes a while!). It does have a very helpful "Files to Edit" section where it will list any tracks that it thinks you need editing (Unknown Artist, Album, etc.) and this is a good place to start.

Just checked my files and they are both named with the track number and also have the track number embedded in the meta data, so not sure why MMI can't display them in the correct order :(

Some of my albums do indeed have different artists for different songs with album artist set to 'various artists'. I'm not willing to set the artist tag for compilations to 'various artists' too - this would mean I lose the correct information and in some cases will have no idea who a track is by.

Pretty rubbish really, I'm surprised that the system isn't just working :|

Unfortunately this behaviour seems common with a lot of media players, for example smart TVs. One reason for this is that the 'part of a compilation' tag, which can be set in iTunes or with tag editors, is not an official tag, so seems to be ignored by these players.

I've no idea why they can't just use a scheme which says that if the album-artist tag exists then use that as the artist name instead, which would work in most, if not all, cases.

Yes, I've come across this same issue with a number of devices and PC applications which is why I'd rather just bin all of the artist information on compilations and get a nice clean display. Of course you get the same problem with any albums by an artist where one or more songs is "featuring" another artist - you have to lose the name of the featured artist otherwise these get split into separate albums as well.

I'm having that issue with some of the content on my SD card. From "I" onwards but not on everything the tracks are displayed twice and some albums and will play the same song twice in a row which is annoying. I have set up with album artist too but will check this media monkey out to see what's what.

well ive tried media monkey and removed all the album artist tags for every song (they were all the same as the Artist anyway) And it has made NO difference.

im thinking now im going to have to go into Audi and show them what its doing and get them to see if they can help. im at my wits end no idea why it suddenly started doing this.

I can copy the offending songs from the mac to another blank sd card and they display correctly but its too small to have my whole content. that's why I bought a 64GB card in the first place. all was fine up until a few weeks ago when I loaded it with new songs. haven't a clue why its doing this!

ISSUE RESOLVED

Ok so I've managed after 2 hours of messing around to suss it out.

If i copy the whole contents of music what i put on the SD card all at once, the MMI has a fit and displays the songs twice, but not on all folders, its random.

what i did to rectify the issue was:

1, identify duplicate folders (max 8 at a time)
2, put SD into mac, and delete those artists
3, put the SD back into the car and let it process it. (go into media centre where album and artist etc will be greyed out. when its finished scanning they will light up)
4, put SD back into the mac and copy the artists you just deleted back onto the SD card
5, Put back into the car and let it process again.

you should see any duplicates deleted and a single listing for tracks again.

i have NO idea why it did this but when i identified this issue, i deleted from I to T and then did the steps above but it failed. maybe it was trying to do too many at once, thats why i recommend a max of 8 artists.

doesn't matter if only some albums of the artist are duplicated, just treat them as "the affected artist"

i now have the pleasure of having a normal library without duplicates and can listen to songs without having to skip EVERY TIME to the next track.

hope someone else finds this info useful.

Not my area of expertise at all, but could the duplication be because you have album tags AND album folders? I don't use folders at all, tech pack sorts it all for me.

I don't think so. It was working perfectly fine before I added some more music. I dont know why it happened but I'm glad it's resolved.

Hi just resurrecting this thread!

Did anyone find a solution to the 'Album Browser' carousel problem with compilations (IE the carousel showing multiple images of the album... one for each track by a different artist)

Thanks
Dave

The best way to do the compilations is to put the artist after the song title and put various artists in the artists name and various artists in album artists. That way you can still search for song and artists name. Even on iTunes. It keeps your album as one on the album cover search on MMI
