Air Bag Dash Light On?

Hey guys,

The air bag light has just come on the dash and wont go out. Ive run VAG-Com and hasnt thrown any fault codes.

Any ideas what to check next?
 
Check the cabling under the seat, make sure nothing has come loose.
 
If you have a light there will be a fault code... did you scan the airbag module?

LOL and yes if the light is on you will have code, if you use vcds it should see it unless the module is busted in that case you won#t be able to read it, had this on an A4 B5 still have the scars on my arms to prove what an **** it was to remove.
 
Ive read its location is under the centre console were the gear stick is but all i can see is the normal ECU that i connect VAG_COM to?
am i looking in the wrong location? I just scanned normal Vag-Com to check for all codes not any specific module. Any ideas?

But anyways,

The article is well worth a read as it's common issue across the golf platform which the A3 shares, so by the looks of things you need to have a look at the part no on the module to see if it is one those that is affected by scanning. My guess is the module is now dead.

## This fault is NOT to be ignored when found in a major and/or critical system (Airbag, ABS etc.). If you try to clear this fault, VCDS may tell you that there is an unexpected result or that the controller refused the command. This is normal since this specific fault can generally not be cleared.
## When stored in other unimportant systems (Radio etc.) the general suggestion is to ignore it unless you notice functional limitations. Within the warranty period dealers are usually required to replace such control modules, but there have been a couple of cases with similar codes where these are getting ignored due to flaws in the control module software. If in doubt please refer to technical bulletins and similar documents provided by the vehicle manufacturer.
## When found in Audi Airbag Generation 6 & 7 (see Audi TPI 1308401): ## A Problem with the Acceleration Sensor may result in the Airbag Control Module storing this Fault Code. Replace the Airbag Control Module and both Acceleration Sensors.

## When found in Audi Airbag Generation 8: ## Due to low Voltage the Control Module does not complete it's Self Test successfully. Replace Airbag Control Module and install a low Voltage Protection Relay to ensure future mishaps won't cause this again. UPDATE The Protection Relay may not be available anymore, though the Parts Catalog lists updated Control Modules now.

## When found in certain older TDI Engine Control Modules (ECM) which have a vacuum line going to them: ## Check/Repair the Vacuum Line before and inside the ECM.

Yeah I think it's dead too. Question is thought is it located in the same place the normal ecu connector is that I connect
vag com to and if so how do I get to it to locate the part number?

I don't get this you don't connect direct to it
you connect at the odb post as normal
then click the airbag part.

not sad jojo. I've just got a new young family that I spend time with instead of pointless comments about
F1 that I don't watch anymore because it's boring. Crap rules and crap sounding cars. Again nothing to do with who is winning.


just to add I'm simply asking is the air bag ecu fitted the same place were I connect my vag com?
 
nope the airbag ecu is on top of the transmission tunnel just by the firewall, so incredibly hard to get to to change it
 
Firewall? Do I have to take out the whole centre console
From the rear ash tray up to the gear stick ?
 
I've done this job once on my A3. I'll throw pictures so you can see where it's at.

The yellow part is the connector of the loom of wires connecting to the airbag ecu.

And from another angle just to show you how far inside the dashboard it is:

I took out the lower part of the centre console (have to remove the armrest first), the centre console (with stereo, climate control and buttons etc.), the glovebox and the column under the steering wheel. The airbag ECU was attached to the transmission tunnel with 4 bolts (1 acting as grounding) which you could barely reach with your hands and a small ratchet (or whatever you call it). Hope this helps! :)

That's great thanks. My only question is on mine I have a plastic box that the
Air circulation is diverted. Is it under that and if so how do I remove it
 
Yeah theres the sort of "ventilation air pipe" in the way. That's the plastic box you're referring to.

I believe this is it:

It splits half through the middle or somewhat (top part-lower part), like this:

So first you have to kind of budge it and get it to split. Be careful, there are kind of small plastic clips. That's the way one side attaches to the other. Once you kind of get it to split, then it's just a matter of twisting and using sensible power to bend and twist it so you can get it out from the side. Atleast I didn't find any other good solution. Take the top/lower (depends from which side you approach) out first. Just take your time and be careful. Once you get those out of the way, then you can already see the airbag control module laying underneath there. Hope it helps!
 
If I unplug my one will the light stay off because mine has come on since I ripped my interior out but all the airbags will be taken out anyway ?l
 
No, the light stays on even if you unplug the airbag control module or airbags or whatever. There are two simple ways to get the light off. One is covering the light with duct tape or something, which sucks, but will get the light away (note, that you will possibly fail MOT, because the light wont be visible on ignition). The other is putting resistors between airbags and the airbag control module, to trick the control module to think there really is an airbag connected. This is a more better solution, but note that you should only disable airbags if you're really sure that it's not necessary for safety!
