Right grommet for water drain?

Hi guys.

I'm aware that some B5 and B6 A4's had an issue with water under the battery, as do some (B5 too?) Passats. I noticed I had water dripping onto the right hand driveshaft today, and it was consistently dripping for about an hour.

When I shone a torch into the chamber that the battery sits in I noticed about 2" of water. I stuck my hand down the back of the engine underneath the battery and felt a grommet, about 2" in length. I popped it half out to let the water drain, but not all the way out as it would have been difficult to get back in. You can see about a third of this grommet under the battery on the left hand side. The water has now completely drained away.

Question is: are there any proper drain holes in that chamber that are covered up by the battery (other than the one I found), or under the pollen filter etc? I don't want to disturb the pollen filter housing as I know these can be troublesome with water, and I know the battery is a bit of a PITA to get out: so will the removal of that grommet be sufficient for the water to drain away permanently, or do I need to pull all the battery etc out to clear a hole thats been covered up?

Thanks ion advance,
Dan

In my B7 (and I think B6) there are 2 rubber grommets. One under battery, one to the other side of the bay. Pull out both. They have a strong tendancy to collect leaves, etc and too hard to allow water removal. You dont need them.

Checked mine last week on B7 and they had already been pulled out of the holes. Were just sitting over the holes so previous owner had already dealt with this issue. The one under the battery is only partially visible but you can get your fingers to it.

Just pull them up to unseat them and allow any water to drain immediately.

One under the battery tray and the other under the servo

Lovely jubbly.

Well, as above, I've located the one under the battery, just one to go then. Seems like a stupid design fault to me, but then again I had a Mk4 Golf for 5 years so I'm used to stupid things.

What I think I'm going to do when have the time is remove them, cut holes into them and pop them back so it looks a little more factory. Mind you, no-one will ever go under there so just as easy to leave them out!

Thanks for the help guys.:icon_thumright:

Just to confirm because i did this myself last week.

There are actually 3 rubber grommets there is a rectangular one under the battery that doesn't drain anything the gromit to remove is behind the battery an is the same style as the one by the servo.
I pushed both through.

I'm just concerned people are pushing feeling under the battery and pushing this rectangular one through with no thought as to where the water will drain through this hold and into what it might drain onto.

It feels similar to the two others if you can't see it but be aware that is not a drain hole grommet.

Just a heads up guys
