Hi folks,
I have just purchased a 2007 A6 2.0 TDI. As my query is more enginge related thought I would also post in here as well as A6 forum to see if anyone has had similar problem with an A4 2.0 TDi. Car seems fine apart from when starting from cold. After a couple of minutes the car is very shuddery / jerky but only between 1200 - 1800 rpm. Anything above this and its fine. If you stop it idles normally. Once the engine is warm the problem disappears. Almost feels like a misfire. It has been scanned with VCDS and no faults were detected. This is my first Audi and really happy with it other than this and was just wondering if anyone has had similar problems or recommendations to check?

Sounds like a dirty egr!
Easily cleaned and chances are its never been cleaned as not a service item!
I done mine and was filthy, was a lot smoother after

Thanks for the replies guys
Chez - do the gaskets need replacing after cleaning the EGR Valve? and will any old can of carb cleaner help to get rid of the build up

DJ - HI if it was engine mounts creating the problem would it not still be there after the engine reached normal operating temperature?

Read the first post wrong sorry; engine mounts will be a constant shudder when the car is idling (which is what I read when quickly scanning over the thread at work) would also show up in VCDS. If the EGR's clogged there should also be a shudder on startup, even if it's not the EGR you may as well blank it off to save problems down the line.

Thanks for the links to the how to. Took the EGR valve out today and gave it a good clean. It was pretty clogged. However it has not made any difference to my problem :sob: although throttle now seems more responsive.

Well fuel filter now changed and fault is still there. Guess it needs to go into a garage to see if they can find out what is causing the problem. Thanks for the suggestions

lol small shudder i could put up with but at its worst feels more like kangarooing. definitely not race car like - more like nodding dog

Timing belt had just been changed before I picked up the car - could timing be off slightly or would this be apparent throughout rev range

Let me know what you find out as my 2006 A4 2.0 170 TDI has the exact same issue. Its going into local indy garage today for vag-com scan and to see if they can find anything.

I have had the shuddery issues from cold for ages, well over a year. Not really bothered about it too much as was running smooth after a couple of minutes and didn't notice any other issues. Of late getting much worse though, not just when cold. To be honest it may be a different issue but intermittently it has really struggled around 1500-2000 revs. Usually clears when gets through that range but on 3 occassions it has gone into limp mode. Stopping and restarting engine clears it and it then seems to run fine for a while. Also had issues with car smelling a lot of diesel (outside) when running from cold, and on one occassion when stuck in a queue on cold engine last winter it was very smelly and smokey.

EGR was replaced not so long ago, I've used diesel cleaner in a tank and have started filling up with Shell Nitro. Seems to run a bit smoother on Nitro but still judders at times and went into limp mode this week once on that.

I'll let you know what the garage come up with if anything.

Diagnosis back on mine - couple of issues, both expensive.

Revs & limp mode is turbo blades sticking open.

Shuddery running when cold is injectors not working properly, diesel leaking into cylinders so possiblt injector replacement and & maybe cam shaft related. (Injectors were replaced under recall over 2 years ago)

I'll sleep on it but thoughts are to trade it in, have already suffered EGR replacement (twice), injectors, DPF issues, and now this. Not been a great car.

hesitation at these revs is caused by a faulty vacuum unit that is attached to the inlet manifold. Cheap fix if you can do it yourself , about £10 for a new one. They have a diaphragm inside which splits. You have to take the inlet manifold off but it's easy enough.

Vac

If you need part numbers let me know, got mine from TPS

mm707 can you post the part number for this please ?

My car hesitates at these revs and ive tried/cleaned and tested everything else so this could be a hopefull fix if its that and not exspensive either :)

Many Thanks

Col

Sorry to hear about your probs Northtim. I have had diagnosis back from garage that it is the DMF that needs replaced and should be getting done under warranty so fingers crossed that will solve my issues

part number S03G129061C £10.82 last year

EGR + manifold gasgets £8.90 from TPS if you want to change them.

Manifold is easy to get off but one bolt is not always obvious, it is inside air intake and usually covered in crud. clean it up and it's easy to get out.

no problem, just thinking you will also need a couple of cans of carb / choke cleaner as the inside of the manifold
will need a good clean out while it's off.
