These cameras are already fitted on the M1. They're called variable speed cameras and they activate whenever there is a speed restriction on the sign (60,50,40 etc). If it's national speed limit, the signs are off and the cameras are deactivated.
I this will be similar. Probably the telegraph getting short on things to report on so trying to scare monger

Sorry I didn't read the full article. They are trying to change the existing variable cameras to catch at 70 too. I don't think it will come in, and if it does it will only be on short priority stretches

Never happen. They simply would be unable to generate the tickets needed, they would lose all credibility and would also go against their own criteria of cameras in accident black spots.

This is scare mongering.

Also if this is a new camera it will have to go through type approval before it can be used.

A second also, I'm pretty sure these are actually there to monitor and enforce the hard shoulder as many motorways are moving to using it as a running lane. The camera doesn't have adequate visibility over lanes 2 and 3

If it's national speed limit, .............. and the cameras are deactivated.

That's not entirely true, some are live for higher speeds, I've seen them go of time after time on the M25 with no speed warnings up, so I always stick to a sensible speed to not trigger.

Ah that's fair enough. You learn something new every day. I tend to stick to the limits through these cameras just in case

No. The police always paint their cameras yellow but councils and highways operated cameras are normally grey

Not true, all cameras are operated in partnership with the police hence the term camera partnerships. Councils have no speed cameras operated outside of the partnerships. Grey speed cameras are operated between the police and the Highways Agency and appear on motorways in gantries.

In Scotland they have to be high vis i think........ . These cameras have been between m8 and forth road bridge for a while now

M25 Junction 10 to Junction 5 are definitely active. This is the area that passes Clacket Lane Services where the motorway widening has just been completed.

Cameras definitely active, seen them flash on quite a few occasions during both day and night... I drive that section everday and I sit at 75 - 80 (On my speedo) and am not going faster than that for fear of points and fines.

Yep they are active on the M25 J5 - J6. Pass them everyday, they go off when there are no signs stating the speed limit (when the road defaults to 70). There are 2 cameras each way, on the same gantry as the other carriageway.

In Scotland they have to be high-vis (usually yellow and orange diagonal stripes) and clearly visible from at least 200m, iirc.

I've seen that single grey camera in between junctions 5-10 on both sides. I thought it flashed me once, because this camera has a pretty bright flash, but I was certain that it wasn't me as I was doing 55mph! Around the time they resurfaced the left-hand lane and opened it, that camera was flashing constantly. Lately i haven't seen it flash at all, probably because everyone watches their speed when they go past it. In addition to this camera, in some places there are the 4 individual grey cameras that sit behind the blue motorway/destination/variable speed limit signs that monitor 4 lanes of traffic. It hasn't been rolled out to every motorway sign along the M25, but speed markings on the road surface are present at each one, so it might be installed at each one.

slightly off topic......
I work on the M25 as an 'incident support operative', I have been there almost 13 years and in those 13 years in every saftey briefing and 'monthly meeting' they will always bring up the subject of 'red crosses' and how they can enforce the law to stop people contravening a red X. Personally I have tried my best to have people fined or prosecuted for going through the red cross, there is no excuse for going under one, it's a pretty universal sign (big RED cross) so the old chestnut of "I don't understand English" should not come into it, it is in the highway code that you should not proceed in a lane displaying a red cross. Due to a hell of a lot of red tape and 'bollotics' they have never been able to prosecute people for this offence, however.... Since november last year they have made a lot of progress on this matter and in march of this year they told us that as of April '14 (M25 J5 - J20) the variable speed cameras WILL be live and WILL fine people for contravening the speed displayed at the time and also going through a red cross, these cameras DO NOT have to flash. They have even told me that (as of april '14) on my way to an incident (which I have a 20min response time to attend) I MUST NOT go under the red X without a job reference number otherwise ME personally will be fined for doing so!!! I say M25 J5 - 20 however they are constantly updating the matrix's around the m25 , it seems that the ones DEFINATLY WORKING are the newer style matrix, that seem to have a smaller red circle when displaying a certain speed. I'd say it's probably a matter of months before the whole m25 is covered and 100% of the A.L.R. (All Lane Running) sections are a certain 'No No' for speeding or going through red crosses.
P.S. anybody blatantly ignoring, firstly the many arrows preceeding a red cross and then going under a red cross is an absolute ignorant w$%ker,
just my 2 pennith worth :)

Actually, speed cameras can be any colour; what happened a few years ago, was that the police used to operate the cameras exclusively, and all of the money went to the government. However, in around 2003, (i think), the government introduced a thing they called "hypothecation", which meant that whatever money the camera had made was set, and if the camera then made more money in subsequent years, the police were given that "extra", the money above what it had previously been received. But to be eligable for the money, the police had to paint the cameras which were eligable, under the scheme, yellow. This meant that the police were then able to pay for the policing of the cameras from the money they were able to generate; whereas befor hypothecation came in, they paid for the policing out of thei own budget.

I went between the M26 and M23 along the M25 last night, and wasn't hanging about... Penny dropped a little too late that I was in the HADECS 3 zone and now crapping myself that I might be getting a NIP! No flashes (didn't think HADECS flashed?) and no speed limits illuminated. But as far as I'm aware these work all the time?
