Since owning this car 5 people have now mentioned that it sounds like it's blowing when I start
it up in the morning I even took it to an exhaust place and had it checked over that said it was solid
but I can't believe it sounds so pants initially.
I think it gets better as it gets warmer but it's had to tell when you are driving.
i had a friend blip the throttle and it does sound like it's blowing unless this is normal when cold or damaged / old?

43k on an 08 plate

Also what are my options if I did want to change the exhaust without an expensive system
so it sounds better if this is how it's gonna be?

Not sure if it's the same thing but mine sounds a bit boomy when cold, but that's because it is! Changing to a performance exhaust gives you a few bhp gains but then you need a sport cat to release a few more....I might be wrong but I think you only achieve 5 - 7bhp from a sport cat and exhaust like a miltek or status but it does make the car breath a lot better ( reduces back pressure ) and if you are modding your engine over 250bhp you'll need to to do this! Downside, as some members have recently discovered you go for a non resonated exhaust it can sound very noisy inside your car. Also, it's a lot of cash which could get you a stage 1 remap plus some nice wheels and enough money left over for a ****** damn good Summer BBQ.

Yea it does have a nice note mate but it's mainly the blowy sound like you get if there is a hole in the middle pipe but it's all
been checked and seems ok?
It's annoying because a few people have mentioned it now and 2 more this morning but the exhaust shop said it's not leaking anywhere.
I'm not worried about getting more power I'd be happy with just a pair of new back boxes if it improved the sound a bit.
Does it have some kind of valve that opens up when it's hotter perhaps?
I hand a 330ci that had a valve on it that used to open more when warmer

2.0tfsi does sound like this when cold startup. when the revs drop to idle it goes away. annoying isnt it!

My avant sounds the same from cold. Enough that my Mrs commented!

Had it up on a 2 poster and i can't see any leaks, though slight signs of soot at the n/s silencer inlet, but not sure if they crack around there?

I just parked down the side if my house up against my garage and recorded it so the sound is a little more amplified than normal
I'll try and load it

Sounds blowy to me. Mine doesn't sound like that. Mine sounds a tad wet fart ish, yours sounds like it's not right somewhere.

My 2.0 TFSI always sounded like that from cold. I had it just short of 4 years.

I found a new sound today lol. Leave car running and take oil dipstick out lol... engine appears to get annoyed.

Its doing that for a reason as you creating a vacuum in the engine. Same as with the oil filler cap. But if yours stick's when you take it off you got a slight issue :p

UPDATE:

Two exhaust specialists now looked at the exhaust both confirmed no leaks.
Second place makes stainless units, said it's deformed not leaking but it doesn't sound right.
Reckons the blowing noise could be a failing baffle in the NR side box as the blowing sound doesn't appear
To be happening further forward.

Said a new stainless unit from the cat back would set me back £450 inc VAT

I can choose any style and sound I like ( i would stick to factory look with a slightly more mean sound... No drone)

Thoughts?

Just FYI the blowing noise comes from the NR side rear box on mine too. Im pretty sure its normal mate and this exhaust man is finding a way to make a sale lol. ofc i could be wrong :p

would it help if i recorded mine in the morning when i leave for work and see if it sounds the same?

are you specifically talking about switching on until idle speed or revving/acceleration?

Mine also seems to be from nsr silencer. My drive is on a slope and initial start and pulling off the drive it sounds a bit blowy. Will be good to know what you find with it.

Av4nt,

If it's not to much trouble that would be great.

It sounds like it's blowing only if you gently blip the throttle
from 1-3k rpm and when driving about slowly at low rpm too.
As above my car is also on a slope drive and it sounds terrible in my opinion.

Just for the record it doesn't get any better when it's properly hot.
It like that all the time.

Cheers

ah right ok. usually if you blip the throttle when its just started it will sound odd. wierd if it stays like it though.

do the revs drop after a while after startup still or do they stay above 1k rpm?

I have to be honest and say I'm not sure think they start a little higher and settle nicely just below 1000?

Revs seem fine buddy

Yeah it should start over and then settle down just under thats right.

Ill do the clip for you in the morning mate and upload it after work so u can compare. :)

i think it sounds pretty well actually.. better than a diesel

Stevie, got clip this morning mate.

Should be clear enough for you to compare sound. Ill upload it when I get home later.

Takes about 45 seconds from startup for the "blowing" noise to ease off and then the revs settle to idle after 1:30

Cheers mate, will be interesting to know if this blowing on yours (although it settles down) originates from the NS Exhaust, if it does it must be that mine is just a noisy SOAB !

:)

Yep definitely nearside pipe that makes the blowing noise. it must be how the pipes are routed or something I dunno.

Here's mine done earlier. Hot outside with aircon on if that makes any difference to load or idle speed.

What do you think?

Scotty that's in interesting thread wonder if it is the pcv :-/

Novril, yours sounds a lot like mine lol like a kid with the farts!!
Wtf!?

Av4nt yours is even louder but do you have a performance exhaust or just new pipes?
Still similar noise though.

I think this basically means it's normal then ?

lol really? i thought novrills was twice as loud as mine! maybe i was closer to it?

i just have new pipes no new boxes. its normal mate i wouldnt worry :)

Mines factory as well, sounds fine once warm. At the end of the clip you can hear it quieten down a fair bit. Strange isn't it.

I was about a foot away from it using my phone and quite low down when recording.

a few people are like "that sounds blowy" so im like "want a race?" muhaha

Listened to the clips and that's exactly how mine was. I reckon this is just how they are.

Well at least we know now that all of ours sound the same and we aren't alone!

Good excuse to go for a milltek or the like...
