Water dropping on back seats??

A3 SB owned for a three weeks now and have noticed when opening the rear doors several drops of water drop on the side of the seats...or persons lap if seats are occupied.
This happens on the near and offside. Level ground.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Seams like dodgy seals or basic design fault to me.


Apart from the above I am very please with this car.

I have noticed this, too!

I have alcantara leather seats and need to wipe the water off the leather before it stains it!

I wondered if it was a design fault on shape of the door in how the water collects and should be dispersed!

There was a similar issue on the A5 (3 doors) when it first came out ... It may still have the same issue!

Exactly the same happens on my A4 B8. Think it's just a design oversight. Its annoying though

Yes it happens to me as well. Nothing you can do to avoid it except wiping the car down first.

One top tip....if you come back to your A3 after it's been raining, don't drive away with the windows open otherwise your arm and the door card gets covered in water from the roof when you turn left.

Its a common problem on modern cars as the design gurus have done away with the 1970s style welded seam rain gutters on cars. A triumph of style over functionality. The 8V does have a little more of a rain channel than other cars. My old 8L was notorious for dumping rain, snow etc on the seat when the door was opened.

Tends to be worse if you wax your car as those lovely beads hold more water than dirty cars and those beads will run at the slightest change of angle.

As Leo says, not much you can do about it.

You've hit the nail right on the head there John. Cars have done this since gutterless designed bodywork came in years ago.

Weirdly, both of my rear doors and front passenger door don't dump water on the seats; it's just the driver's door that does it. I find the best way to limit the amount of water that falls onto the seat is to creep up and open the door without waking the car. The element of surprise works like a treat!
