Have done approx. 4500 miles in new S3 & oil light has come on, any advice on topping up & best oil to use. Was a bit surprised to see oil light on 6 months old car. Not a car expert, maybe that's normal?
Have been enjoying the car & driving hard when given the chance !

It doesn't really matter which brand (Castrol Edge, Shell Helix Ultra, Quantum, etc.) but the most important thing is to look for the following on the label of the bottle:

VW 504 00 507 00
5W-30 (assuming UK usage)

I also had to top up oil after about the same time and mileage, but done same mileage again none used, I also got a free 1ltr of Castrol
edge 5w30.

My oil is actually over the hash marks on the dip stick by around 8mm.... Dealer said its fine to be over? I had no oil supplied, but I guess I won't be needing any for a little while.

I have a couple of litres of mobil1 0w-40 VW502 00 /VW505 00 lying around ... Anyone know if this is ok?

8mm over... if it's anything like the 8P dipstick then it certainly isn't fine unless they state in the handbook that oil level should be checked whilst the engine is running. Too much oil can cause turbo and valve stem seals to go.

Hmmm I didn't check whilst running, but oil was up to temperature. I'll double check when running!

I'll be a little annoyed if the dealer fibbed about that! We'll see

You are supposed to check your oil much more frequently than that........

When is the oil level supposed to be checked? I've been doing it on a cold (non-running) engine. Is that wrong?

Not an S3, but I've had my 2.0TDI-184 for two months and done 2,000 miles and I've not yet needed to add any oil. I've checked the oil every week but so far nothing added.

Says in the handbook turn engine on for 2 minutes then check I think.

I got a free bottle of the Shell stuff from my dealer. Also used a 1Ltr since new. Done 8000 miles.

Had my 1.8T eight months (albeit sadly only done 4000 miles for various reasons) and not needed to top up yet. I'm always a bit wary of VW group engines as the Mk 5 Golf I had from new drunk oil for quite a while.

I wouldn't use the 502/505 , you could use it to aid getting the dregs out on an oil change.

Don't pull out the dip stick with engine on, I would imagine it would pump it out!

Let the car get warm, park on level surface, leave for 5 mins. Remove dip stick and clean, then dip it again for actual level.

Do you get a series of lights to indicate the level, or just a red warning caused by low pressure?

Last week I checked the oil and opened the coolant cap. A day later, the coolant had drained out of the bottom of the car. This morning the oil light came up. I've done less then 3000 miles and owned the car for 3 months. Is this normal?

Any issues if you were to inadvertently use 0w30w from a top brand it has VW 504 00 on the label ? Prob about 500ml.
