So I currently have a 2.0fsi 2004 A3 with 95k on the clock, MOT'd today and passed with no advisories, I haven't done any modifications really, only lowered on 50mm H&R and tinted windows. But I really want to start modding, especially performance mods ie; remap ect. but I know with the fsi I wont really get any gain for my money. Now I don't have much money in the bank to spend on a new car as well as modding so will have to exchange my car and hope I don't have to spend more money. I've found this Audi A3, now it has done alot more miles, but it's diesel, 2.0tdi so will be able to get nice power gain from a remap. I dont really mind it being auto as it has flappy paddles, my A3 has cruise and this one doesnt, this one is half leather...I could go on there are many positives and negatives but I think I need some advice from you guys. If anyone has any tips or advice or anything please share with me.

Thanks in advance

Personally I would hold off and save for a car with lower mileage. Granted vw group cars do seem to almost live forever if properly maintained throughout their lives. But in my opinion and going from previous experience things do tend to start going wrong on cars with high mileage which can be very costly to rectify. I bought a mk4 golf about 8 years ago which had 96k on the clock fsh etc etc. The turbo on the car gave up after covering about 10k in it which was a huge expense at the time to replace. As time progressed I found myself pumping more and more money into it and in the end I sold it for a fraction of what it cost me in repairs over the 2 year period I owned it. My advice is don't do it unless your prepared to pump money into it.

It's pot luck, you can buy a car and it will go on for years without any major problems and others are just money pits. My advice would to buy the car on condition and service history, if possible try and see if it's had a recent DMF or turbo as these are probably the main parts to go wrong. Personally I wouldn't touch an early 2.0tdi with a barge pole tho. Later ones are a lot better. What's the mileage on the car?

Thanks for the advice guys, I will look into it further about the DMF, turbo...it's sitting on 160k atm

Whoa that's high, take a few 2.0tdi out to drive before you buy one. You can then judge the goon-uns and the bad-uns.

Yea I thought it was high but I really just want to start modding haha! I wish I looked into all the different types of a3 before I just bought the first one off the shelf

Ahah. I was exactly the same! I bought the first one I saw. Luckily enough it's been reliable and I've had no problems.

Mines is reliable and everything it's just good for performance upgrades :(
