Where do you put your keys?

My house has a monitored alarm system and I have a safe too. If they can get the keys before the cops come then good on them, they can have the car - Oh and the local cop shop is a 5min WALK away.
Depends what they're stealing it for. Stealing to sell will tend to be new stuff, stealing for a joyride or getaway car can be any age.
No idea where my keys are, certainly takes me more than their 2 minutes to find them each morning.
On a serious note, I try and leave them on the stairs so if they're intent on coming up to get them from me they'll find them on the way. If they don't want to come up they won't find them.

Keys always next to me and when I am at home, they reside in the bedroom. Only one set in the house, spares are hidden away at the in-laws place. If someone wants my keys, they need to go through me now - and they'll not like me when I am angry, nor will they like looking down both barrels of my Beretta ...
After having a car stolen where they removed the cat flap on the kitchen door to gain access and then took the keys that were in my coat pocket hanging off the stairs .... never again. Untold grief to sort it all out and the thought of someone creeping around my house whilst my family slept still haunts me.
Fit a house alarm - they only cost a few hundred quid. No brainer really, but I learnt the hard way.

I depends mainly of why the car is being taken. Your approach might work with a 'joyrider' but I doubt it would work with a professional criminal who is steeling to order. Any self respecting professional car thief would silence the house alarm before entering the house. If the keys were not visible downstairs and they did decide to come upstairs they would probably put a knife to the throat of you wife/partner/girl-friend before asking for the keys. Personally I would much prefer they took my car than harmed my wife.
If you did threaten them with your Berratta (shotgun I assume) I'm sure the Police would want to know why it was not in it's securely locked gun storage, particularly at night. I do actually keep a Walther P38 Pistol by my bedside but is only an Airsoft pistol and I use it to scare pigeons from the trees in my garden. But it would be difficult to tell it was only an airsoft from a few feet away!

Imagine if you were actually in the position of pointing a loaded gun at someone, particularly in a high stress situation, I would be amazed if it ended well. Public opinion, including mine, would be in your favour but that wouldn't prevent you being locked up, probably for several years. No car's worth that.
Make your house the least attractive (for the thief that is) proposition in the street, it doesn't sound very neighbourly but often the best you can hope for is that they will go for an easier option.

Came back from holiday a few years ago to find my beloved Audi TT missing from the front drive - the thieves had jumped over the side fence, damaged the back door and 3 windows until they managed to get in through one of the openings. They found the keys hanging on a hook (out of sight from any window) but did not go into rest of the house as all internal doors were locked.
If keys were not in easy reach, I imagine the doors would have been broken down the rest of the house would have been rifled until the keys were found - it was my pride and joy but only a car. I'm glad we were not at home and in all honesty I do not know what my reaction would have been - I'd like to think I could remain calm and not put our lives at risk.

When I go on holiday every key to the house, doors, windows, second car and any spare car keys come with me. No keys are left in the house what so ever...
Like many others have said. I'd rather someone took my keys than wake me in the night when I'm ******* naked and their armed with no doubt a knife. No car is worth a confrontation and the possible thought you have to attack or be attacked. Don't get me wrong I believe in using reasonable force in your own home when required.
Maybe not the best thing to state on a public forum? Self defence / reasonable force / gun laws etc......

I think our laws have a lot to answer for here. If someone breaks into someone elses property they should immediately loose all their rights, and the owner should be allowed to do whatever they feel necessary to protect themselves and their family. If this were the case this whole where you keep your keys thing would be a lot more straight forward, as you could then keep them sitting beside your grenade launcher on your bedside table lol. In all seriousness though, I just couldnt hand over my keys. Im not that kind of person. Yes its stupid blah blah but if they want my car they would have to come through me first. And thats not me trying to be an internet tough guy thats just the way it is.
The point about 'not been ready' when some breaks in is very valid. How many people would react in any way other than but sh*t theirselves if some one bursts into your bedroom at 3am? Not many if any at all, the shock would be too much. No matter what weapons you've got or how "hard" you are it would all be too quick. My keys have gone from the bedside table to somewhere more intruder friendly! Wouldn't like the idea of someone interrupting my 3 month old daughter and my girlfriend and I while sleeping. I'm a driver not a fighter!

That's open to exploitation though isn't it.
If that was the law you could trick someone you didn't like into coming into your house and then murder them to death, and just say "well he was trying to rob me sooo..."
The case of Oscar Pistorious springs to mind. You keep a gun in the house and if you think a person is an intruder you just shoot them only to find out it was your wife/partner/girl-friend.
Or you kill them on purpose and pretend you thought they were an intruder...

Indeed,but it does make me smile a bit when hearing or seeing people talk about how they'd see off thieves with guns knives,axes,bare fists or harsh language.
Firstly,when the guy is standing in your room with a knife or whatever he's come tooled up with,and you're still waking up,few if any of us are even thinking of picking a fight,let alone capable of it,and those that try usually end up worse off.
Secondly,how many of us sleep with a gun under the pillow,or close to hand,and are really prepared to use it,and suffer the consequences?
Even my South African friends,who DO sleep with guns to hand back home,wouldn't consider it over here.
I do wonder how some of these people with all the talk are going to reach for their gun while they have a burglar with a knife to their throat or whatever. Magnetic hands maybe?

When it happened to me, I remember thinking afterwards that its like someone throwing a tennis ball at your face from close quarters. One time you might duck, one time you might catch it, another time you might bat it away. You just dont know. If it happened to me again, I haven't got the slightest idea what I would do.
My natural instinct should have been to punch the guy and move - its what I train to do week in week out for decades - but instead I ran back in the bedroom and tried to jam the door handle closed while they smashed the door off its frame.
In retrospect it was the best thing to do - but believe me, with the amount of adrenalin thrown into your system (from being fast asleep) anything could happen. You could quite easily kill someone if you have a weapon handy.
Unless you have military/forces training (I imagine) - you just dont know how to handle the adrenalin and you really have very little control, if any.
Any road up. You shouldn't lose sleep over it, or let it alter what car you have. If you do that, those nasty w@nkers have won.

What happens if you forget that they are in the toilet and go take a dump, a bit messy. And does the remote still work after a good flush?
