Hi,

I have a 2001 A3 1.8T which has it's ESP light stuck on. I've plugged it in at various points over the past few months trying to diagnose the issue (clearing faults to see if they return) and have also had an auto electrician check over fuses, earths and power to the ABS Control unit (these all seem fine).

One fault persists:
00538 - Reference voltage

Whilst the following have shown, but since cleared:
P1649/18057 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ABS Controller
01435 - Brake Pressure Sensor 1
00532 - Supply Voltage B+: Signal too Low

With everything checked over, minus the enclosed unit itself I'm fairly sure its either the ABS Control Unit and/or Hydraulic pump.

I know these things are somewhat famous for going wrong, but ahead of forking out for a new unit I thought I'd check if anyone had experienced the above faults and whether a new control unit / hydraulics had fixed the issue?

Thanks in advance.
Allan

For the 01435 code, if it's 2001 facelift, check if the brake sensors are on the master cylinder, if so no ABS unit needed just change the sensors, it will be the one nearest the bulk head under the res, but would change both whilst in there, the signal will be low due to falling sensors

even indies want the best part of 800 to replace abs ecu.

Audi ABS pump & ECU Modulator/Module
A4, A6, A8, Avant, Quattro Etc 1996 - 2000

ABS system: Bosch 5.3
ABS pump location: Under bonnet on the near side next to the washer bottle.

The Audi ABS pump & module sytem has been a very common failure for a long time now, the problem usually starts with the ABS light coming on intermittently but then the problem becomes more constant. We are rebuilding customers own units and supplying direct replacements from stock, we are now selling Bosch 5.3 ABS pumps to Audi main dealers within the UK & throughout Europe. If you would like to send your ABS unit in to us to be tested and rebuilt then please fill in this test form or you can browse our catalogue to select the ABS unit you require.

ABS pump module removal:
We normally only ever need the electronic part of the ABS pump, this is atatched to the side of the pump with six torx screws and can be removed easily. The best way to access the module is to first remove the passenger side front wheel and the inner wheel arch plastic liner, then the washer bottle can be unbolted and moved out of the way giving access to the six torx screws. Remember you can still drive the car with the module removed - you will have conventional braking but with no ABS function and the light will remain on untill the remanufactured module is refitted.
