My 2006 A3 170 TDI suddenly lost all power on the motorway on the way home today, and the glow plug light started flashing. im assuming it went into limp mode, the revs seemed to be limited at 2000rpm. Plugged in a mates VAGCOM tool and got the following fault codes, would anybody be able to shed some light on what these may be?

Thanks for any help!

The car is now not starting at all, I have found that P0322 is the crank sensor, so bought a new one that I will fit in the morning, the other code P3138 is the intake manifold runner control. Does anybody know the best way to check this or am I best to replace the actuator unit?

Not a genuine VCDS cable.

Please do not expect help when using counterfeit or non genuine equipment

Sorry

it may not be the intake manifold runner , it is also mistaken as the anti shudder valve ,located before the egr valve . i would check that first , if the flap is stuck shut the car will not start , which as your car wont start if you change the crank sensor ,this would be what i check next .
replacement needed as it shears the plastic gears inside

hollow - thank you, I will try that if I manage to work out where on earth the engine speed sensor is! I know it is normally between engine and gearbox, but cannot for the life of me see anything where I expect it to be that looks like the new sensor i bought!

thanks mike foster thats useful I tried to get into my local audi garage, but as they could not fit me in until mon and I need this sorted so I can work tomorrow, with a mate offering to help...

I was using ross tech, but the first time I read the faults, and the first time I have used this kit I used the auto detect, this did not give full fault msg. Second time round I realised my mistake. Anyway just for anybody who has similar issues, I changed the crank speed sensor and engine fired up straight away, drives so much better over the last couple of days. All other faults have cleared, including an EGR valve fault that came up after my last post. The strategy uses engine speed sensor signal for both throttle and EGR control. A top up of oil and coolant, new oil cooler gasket a sensor, and a few scratches and bad language is much cheaper than I feared - if only the sensor was easier to get to!
