Audi & Goggle..

I'd go right off a car if they started using Apple in their dashboards!

Me too in fact I wouldn't buy an audi at all because nothing else will work with the system...

Saw that article this morning; interesting how totally opposing people's opinions and POVs can be. I'll choose to quote somebody else's words to one of the comments from this news story:

Android in Audi vehicles? What a major misstep and failure to understand their own customers. Android is the low-rent OS that mostly appears on crappy, cheap hardware. iOS appears only only the finest hardware. Clearly Audi products have more in common with Apple, and I am willing to bet their customers share very similar taste and economic advantages. Android belongs in Kia and Hyundai.

I think someone at Apple had their wicked way with cemerson's and cuke2u's partners.
It's almost as irrational as the hatred of private plates.........

Ah but we know that apple sell products that nobody really need and if you open up an iphone you will find the same samsung componants that are in samsung phones. Don't make me laugh at the os of apple products being 'higher rent' than any other open source coding...

Apple v Android. That could get as heated as Manual v s-tronic in the early days.

Not even owning a smartphone, and having never used any Apple device, although I do have 25+ years of experience supporting Windows based PCs and I do own Google Nexus 7, I think I'll stay well clear of this one.

Apple and Audi really are made for each other!

Sorry couldn't resist this one. The slight different between the Apple and Samsung and Audi and SEAT is the main components is that with Apple, the main components are made by Samsung. But with SEAT the mains components are designed by VW - the platform, the engines are built by Audi and the gearboxes built by VW.

I mearly posted that a amalgation between audi and google was going to happen as products from google, such as earth, were already used by audi. The problem with using apple is that it seems to realy upon the phone as being the central component linking all the other systems. This seems to me that it could mean that any other smartphone would not be able to be used in the same way with any vehicle using the apple method. Thus the reason why I would not purchase any car designed in that way then forces a choice of mobile phone upon me to be able to fully use all of its systems. Unlike apple's restrictive practices I like to make my own mind up about what device or computer , or operating system, I choose to use.

Love it, thank you for pointing it out...

This is just progression on an existing theme.

My old MINI had Connect which only worked on iphone and was designed that way. Ditto BMW connected.

What I wouldn't want to see is all of the cars core systems running on a version of a consumer operating system. The oem canbus logic etc all should be kept IMHO to give consistency between car systems and reliability. I don't think I've ever had to "reboot" my car because the canbus or One of the many ecus has got confused about something.

I know, but I couldn't let the facts get in the way of a good parody.
But you must admit there are certainly similarities, even in many people's opinions of both companies.

The reason I have never been involved with Apple products is their very restrictive practices. Most of my involvement with PCs has been with commercial organisations where Apple and iOS are almost non-existant. Even now they have such a small proportion of the PC market. According the Net Applications in November 2013 all versions of Windows (Vista, XP, 7 and 8) held over 90% whereas Apples OS X had 7.55%.

Apple and Audi do have one thing in common though. They both take fairly standard components and make some desirable out of them.

Ah, typcial fool been completely convinced by the Apple marketing! Android is designed to run on a wide range of hardware, and the flagships that run android are generally a lot higher spec than Apple's offerings. Apple are well behind in terms of hardware spec generally speaking, not that you'd think so from their marketing guff!

I like to think I have an informed opinion working in the mobile industry... android and google generally prefer to implement open standards rather than locking their consumers in to a closed ecosystem, which gives the consumer the choice as to what other hardware, software, systems etc they use with their phone. Apple will try to tell you that their closed ecosystem makes everything work 'better' together or something, but this is generally just more marketing guff from them.

And as cuke says, Samsung generally make the majority of on iPhone anyway (less so in the recent incarnations but still a lot of it) - the processor, screen certainly in a lot of Apple models, so the idea is nonsense to start with.

And also, as has been pointed out as well, Apple's approach seems to be to make the phone the central part of everything, which is stupid really - it will require anyone who buys a car from one of the companies that partnered with them to have one of their phones to get the full benefit, reducing choice again. And since Apple's market share in the smartphone world is going down all the time (15% at the end of 2013 compared to 80% android), I think it'd be suicide for a car manufacturer to partner with them. Google's approach is far better, as the android system is actually pretty good as an embeddable system, and it wouldn't restrict the customer on their other choices.

But anyway, use whatever system you want - just have to put up with the lack of MAP support, lack of rSAP, lack of lightning cable, working out which of many different coloured cables you have to use your iDevice with just because Apple can't stick to a proper standard :p

Longer term the idea of any car company closely linking a phone as part of the car is a bad idea the way technology changes. A better idea is to use wifi to communicate and create apps for the devices you need. Just build the App for the devices so it works with the car set all cars with wifi as standard, charge for apps so they are supported and develop apps for the new phones as they come along.

Linking with Google makes more sense, as they have better maps and information services. All they need is the App available on any phone and that is it sorted.

Strangely the link with google goes against the fact Audi wont develop the Audi online magazine for the android (its iPad only), showing a little bit of a snub to the more popular system, as stated on their facebook feed.

More interestingly will be how much information people are willing to share with google or any other company. Your car could be would be part of big data and internet of everything, it would know how much petrol you had left and update your satnav to direct you to the best petrol station knowing you prefer a brand as you have a loyalty card and also check with the shop beforehand to make sure they have the ginsters pasty you like and can of coke waiting for you. It could easily record all activities on your car and share them with an insurance company to keep your costs down.

If you want to get really sad at the way the modern world is developing with human and machine relationships have a look at Gartner's 2013 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies Maps Out Evolving Relationship Between Humans and Machines its really rather getting more into an IT discussion than a car discussion.

Google takes aim at Apple's 'iOS in the Car' with Audi-Android partnership
Yeah that could only come from an apple forum which is amusing. I think the rest of the tech world thinks the HTC One is in a different league to the iPhone as it won phone of the year and overall gadget of the year this year. T3 Gadget Awards 2013: HTC One wins Phone of the Year | T3
I admit my bias as I now own one of these but after owning a few iPhones this is a class above. Back to cars now...

In an article on-line quoting the Wall Street Journal is the following comment:

While Apple's technology requires an iOS device connected to the car's built-in display, Google, on the other hand, hopes to have Android running on the car's own built-in hardware.

To me a good reason for Audi to choose to go with Google and Android.

I wonder if tech in the car is about to become the new thing. The advert with the nissan juke and google maps was rather fancy showing its now a new must have feature.

I remember when cup holders were the must have feature and buying a car you would look at the engine before the boot and performance meant 0-60.

I can send Google map locations to my A3 from my PC already with Connect... It is quite useful :)

Yep, it's been around for years - old tech really. The Connected package in my mini had everything the 8v tech pack + connect has apart from google map imagery.

Facebook, Twitter etc all a waste of time. At least the mini had some extra fun stuff like extra gauges (water temp, g force meter etc etc) to play with.

Audi need to up their game IMHO, it's all a bit samey at the moment.

More useful would be for it to track my daily commute and then analyse against google traffic averages to tell me if there is a better route etc.

Wow, that is very handy instead of having to search again for it in the car. I remember not too long ago the google maps app on my old iPhone wasnt linked to the navigation app on the same phone so you would have to refind an address on the navigation app to go anywhere even though you had the address sussed out on the maps app. Very annoying but google seem to have sorted that now and linked them.

Means you can look it up, browse around on the PC etc, find the location then just send to car. Bit harder to do that in the car. You can manage all the destinations on the MyAudi site as well.

I had a g-force guage in my old car, was completely pointless :p Water temp is right on the dashboard too for us non-S3 owners.

On a more pedantic note, anyone else spot the issue with the title of this thread? :)

Yes, I was going to make a joke about it but decided it was too obvious in the end :p

Surprising what the brain sees even when it's not quite correct. I never noticed until someone said about it. Perhaps it should just be 'oggle' at other cars and pretty young ladies (sorry girls - nice looking fellas in your case)

Took me a few hours to spot it but you are right its interesting the way your brain makes sense of stuff even if incorrect.

They should work hard at integrating (syncing, accessing on demand..) phones with cars, as opposed to trying to turn cars into tablets. Phones have become the center of our lives, cars never will be. You always have your phone with you. You're in your car maybe 2 to 3 hours a day max. When I sit in my car, I want the car to be aware of some information I shared from my phone, and I don't want to leave car computer's information trapped in it after I leave the car.

Good example of misguided strategy is integration of Facebook and Twitter into cars. You really have to be an utter fanboy to see any utility of these apps in cars. No one with half a brain will learn to use the clunky, clumsy, ugly little Facebook app in their car, while a beautiful, responsive, updateable Facebook app is in your hand. The same goes for almost every single one of these retarded apps in cars.

The problem car manufacturers have is that it's very difficult to charge customers for example 2000 euros for something that "simply" syncs your phone with your car and uses your phone's data connection, but it might be seemingly reasonable to charge them 2000 euros for a "computer inside the car", even though it's almost useless.

if you open up an iphone you will find the same samsung componants that are in samsung phones.

I have been reading the iFixit teardown of the iPhone 5s and it appears there is no Samsung components inside. The only thing is the A7 chip which is fabricated by Samsung. I'm not sure this statement is entirely true!

The whole idea of competing OS in cars is ridiculous imo, i own and use a MBP, but use a Sony Xperia Z as my mobile which uses android, although i like Apple computer products, macs and tablets, their phones have been terrible over the past few years, last one i owned was a 3gs. Never again would i buy an iphone. Apple has chosen a really strict line with other technology, software and hardware and stamps out on competition (take the whole IOS Flash software scenario). Android uses such a broad range of mobile phone manufacturers that their system in a car would probably please a bigger market ratio than those with apple phones. If audi did ever choose apple i wouldnt be very happy. Just my 2 pence

iOS, Android or Windows, you'll all need new phones by the time it's released and it won't matter which you prefer! they'll all work with the new standard for in-car media.

Mirrorlink leaves the Car Manufacturer free to choose the better GUI\Cost option.

Except iOS, as you'll notice Apple are missing from the list of collaborators, as they usually are when 'cooperating with others' is involved! :p

On our Fiesta the OS in the car is a partnership with Microsoft and dragon, the speech recognition software. Some say it is buggy, because of MS's past reputation. However it seems quite solid and can the same stuff, if not more, with her S3 mini than it does with a iphone, such as read out messages and have them read back. Not bad for only a £15k car that has more equipment as standard than my saloon would come with...

Do we all really think Audi are going to make their new stuff only 'really' work with Apple fully? Really?

Ah well you may get a free phone with every car then lol
