I've bought a private reg and I'm now looking to order some plates. As my reg is only 5 characters long, i'd like short plates. I know these are legal as its the type font, size of font and spacing between characters that needs kept with the definitions set out by the DVLA. but I'm a bit confused regarding the grouping of the characters, therefore is the below legal;

R1ABC ? (i'd prefer this)

or does it need to be like this
R1 ABC ?

Bottom one is the legal one but my plate is 5 characters an I have them without space an never had a problem, but standard plates an normal font. I know they're illegal but if I got told to sort it its a quick fix. Go for it!

thanks, want to stay legal so will space the grouping :unsure:

Fair enough, the best option really, it looks good anyway as its not trying to be 1 word

I didn't think you where allowed short plate my brother got told to change his ......

There all corrupt coppers anyway!!

Pressed plates are legal have you considered them? (Provided they are reflective.)

Ive got the same 5 characters long nr plate i have spaced the grouping but a little just that it's not too obvious they are together ask the seller to send you the letters and number plates separate so you can do it for your self

I have 5 characters in my plate, they are all with 7mm spacing even between the number. Have had no problems from the police, however you will need the correct spaced plates for the vehicle to pass an mot, unless you have a relaxed mot centre.
