Right, I love my car ( 2013 a4 2.0 tdi 143, 3000 miles on clock) but ever since I purchased it in may the front two windows have been rattling when going over bumps in the road, very annoying since we live in the uk with shocking road surfaces!!

I have done countless research on the web and all don't seem to give a definite reason why they rattle!??

I took it to warrington audi a few weeks and asked to have a technician come out on a test drive with me but they said that will not be necessary, so I left the car with them and when I came to pick it up they said that the technician test drove the car and couldn't hear the rattle ( must of been a deaf audi techy) and instead they just made a god awful mess of slapping "Crytox" lubricant on the door seals. Safe to say that I drove 10 metres out of the forecourt to hear the rattle almost straight away, well done awesome audi technician! I would of turned round and handed it back but I had to drive back to my raf base that night!

So, I took it back to them this morning and demanded that I want to have a technician come out on a test drive with me which finally they managed to arrange and he did manage to hear the rattle once we got on some uneven road surfaces, and concluded that he had never heard the fault before. I left the car with them in the morning and called them later on in the evening as I hadn't had any information from them, and they said they've removed the door card and everything is tight i.e regulator, speaker etc..
but there is still a rattle so they don't know what to do, they are ordering a new door card to TRY solve it but are not sure. I got told that they took out an identical a4 for a drive to see if the windows on that were rattling and they did rattle exactly the same as mine! Great factory inspection checks and build quality audi! So I'm hoping that a new door card may solve the rattle but I am not very confident that it will!

After my big long winded rant what I do want to ask any of you is that do you know what the cause is or have you had similar problems? Also please don't put, "turn your music up" as I have been doing that and you can only do it for so long!

The windows rattle really bad when the window is fully up and not too bad when down, but a rattle is still present over severe bumps.
Also I can only avoid some of the bumps :(!

I hope someone can shed some light on this as even audi don't know what the f**k to do!!!

thank you
christian

Sounds to me that the regulator system is loose on both & that's inside the door chassis, they need to strip it down to have a closer look, my analogy is when its got the glass down, its holding weight on the regulator system & cant move about as much as when the glass is up all the way.

that is what I thought but they said that the regulators were both tight :/, kind of makes me want to check for myself ( car under warranty) but not too sure whether to as they should be able to sort something like this!! pretty appauling to be honest!

If was me, I would strip door card of, speaker with window up & drive about & slowly remove pieces & see if you can find it that way, back to basics.

I think i will have to give that a try,
although i shouldnt have to as the "experts" should be doing it!! Thanks for the advice mate.

Your not the only one which hates rattling then ! My wife doesn't understand why it bothers me.
I was going to suggest putting some silicone spray lubricant on the door rubbers because when i got my car new they were rattling like mad over every bump like you said and i took it back they sprayed the door rubbers with silicone lubricant spray and gave me a free bottle and the problem was fixed. Apparently it is something what they wash it with makes the rubbers rattle.
But if they have already some lubricant on the doors seals i am not sure what it will be.

Hey I shouldn't have to write book sized emails to Samsung UKHQ over effing ridiculous bad flagship products either, but I am because otherwise I will have to settle for what I have, which isn't going to happen, effing large companies do **** me of these days, but on your case its just the dealership, not vag, being thick-headed & cant be ***** to spend time on a problem, I relish fixing problems.

Audi dynamik, i do hate any form of rattles i wish i didn't have a finely tuned ear at times haha! Taking on samsung, best of luck its a bit like me taking on the lazy dealership who cannot be bothered to spend the time on a fault instead prefer to f&&k me around sending me back and forth with no proper repair, they must think i have no life and can just give my car to them whenever!!!

Hi,
long time lurker but had to sign up to reply to your thread.
I too have a 2013 BE with rattly windows.
I think that the problem is the trim around the frame which hides the metal of the door. I don't know if this can be 'packed' in some way to limit any movement.

I'm of the same opinion as you that I'm not getting the same feeling about the quality from Audi as I expected and they are no where as good as BMW for example. I have a lot if niggly issues with mine but I'm just going to live with them.
The one saving grace is that the A4 Sline is a stunning looking motor.

Welcome :), yeah im hoping that something can be sorted out by them if they look for the fault properly!! We shall have to see but there is no way im going to live with it!! If they cant solve it ill demand a car change!

Took mine in last Saturday for the same rattle. the tech guy was great and adjusted the door as he said that would solve the rattle. Job done. I have no idea what he adjusted but door is slightly harder to shut but it has solved the rattle. Hope this helps.

He maybe adjusted the striker plate position which may account for the issues of closing.

Just a quick one. You sure its the windows???? Mine did the same from brand new and i was convinced it was the windows or loose doors. It was even returned to the dealer for investigation. It turned out to be dry door rubbers of all things. I didnt believe them til i drove it after they had put a thin smear of silicon grease on them. Rattle gone. Might be worth a try.

I got Audi to adjust the door striker plates on both my front doors which has mostly cured the window rattles, at the expense of having to give the doors a harder shove to close it. I occasionally still get a very slight rattle on the drivers side but find just flicking the window switch up to re-seat the window cures it (I think they gradually loosen down a bit). It's easy enough to do yourself - *but* you will need the correct spline drive tool to loosen the plates. Do not be tempted to use anything but the correct tool as you will knacker the bolts, and the adjustment is miniscule - go too far and you wont be able to open/close the door properly.

Edit - as a test, just wind a couple of turns of electrical tape around the door striker bar - this has the same effect of moving it inwards sllightly and you can see if it helps with your rattles before making/requesting the adjustment.
