S4 cambelt change

Just got my 1999 S4 back from a 60k service & MOT. Good news is that it passed, bad news is they told me that at it requires a cambelt change (at 80k or 6 years old - whichever comes first!).

They quoted me £991 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked2.gif

Obviously i'm gonna shop around other Audi dealers & independents, but just wanted to ask what other S4
owners have paid.

i got a quote from awesome-gti a while back of around £400-500, which is what most people say they pay £991 is the most extraordinary quote i've heard for cambelt change!

make sure they do the water pump & dampner included, i'm sure they'll quote that in anyway.
 
I've done this job before,its a ******, you end up with half the engine in bits!
Parts are £400 ish!!! same job for any V6 inc TDI that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif my customers of with diesels!
Good mpg followed by big service bill!!
THe belt job is one reason I went for the 1.8T stedy eddie instead of S4.

Yes it's around £500 at a good independent (including the water pump). I bet your quote doesn't include the water pump as Audi like to do this job seperately a year later and charge you another £700.
You have to take the front of the car off, so the bulk of the work is labour, which is why Audi charge so much at £80+ per hour.
Parts are about £180 (I can only assume Rob got his parts from Audi)
Can't believe someone would choose a 1.8T over an S4 because of the cost of a cambelt change. It's about £150 difference between the V6 and the 1.8T!
 
Yes, I only fit Audi parts.
This is not the place to fit spuriarse.
As I said it was one of the reasons for the 1.8t and not the S4.
I am trying to be sensible with daily fuel use as my 67 mustang with 800 bhp gets rid of plenty.

No I said you bought them from Audi not that they were Audi parts. Audi don't make the water pump or belts, not sure about the tensioner.
Good specialists only uses OEM parts but they don't pay through the nose just to get them stamped with the 4 rings.
Audi charged me £800 for my 2.8Q cambelt change, (before I knew better), then found out later they hadn't done the water pump which started to fail 15k miles later and Autotechnik did the job properly including another cambelt/tensioner etc for £465. The water pump was so coroded you couldn't turn it by hand, so it was literally a few miles away from stripping my shiny new cambelt (including its expensive Audi logo) and most of my 30 valves. Needless to say I will never use a dealer again.
If the part needed is one of the few actually manufactured by VAG then Autotechnik will source it from VW, but there are very few consumable parts actually manufactured by VAG.
Mann filters, jurid brake pads, bosch electrics, hella lights, ronal wheels, Valeo aircon etc etc the list is endless.
 
I don't have time to go serching for suppliers, I ring my Audi dealers and the part arrives the next day. The correct one first time.
I get a good discount and pass some on to my customers.
I have fitted parts supplied by customers that have shopped around,GSF etc. The parts have not lasted at all well..
Just my findings,
I love to here about the dredded dealer rip offs.Keeps me busy!

I wouldn't pass on any discount to him, he's a moron. At £400 for parts on a cambelt change I guess you've already worked that out.
If you don't have time to save 50% on most Audi parts then business must be good.

Found a local Audi specialist who will do the work (all belts, water pump, tensioner, pully, v-belt etc) for £550.
Spoke to Audi Whetstone & they agreed to drop to £800....

I've since checked out this 'Audi specialist' on other forums & have read mixed opinions. i'm gonna probably pay Audi-Docklands the extra £200 just for the peace of mind. I've been 'burnt' before, after initially opting for the cheap option.
 
Just out of interest, how far away are you from Fontains at Iver, near Slough? Their reputation as an non-franchise Audi specialist is pretty high (I've used them several times & can't fault them) & their labour rate is £55 per hour plus VAT, instead of typically £90 plus VAT at a dealer.
