Not had a mapped car before, and was planning to get Stage 2 Revo on my 2002 S3 in the coming months, but am slightly confused where to take it.
My local Revo dealer (VAG specialist) isn't equipped with a rolling road, and when I queried this he informed me the car is set up with live mapping on the road, and he steered me to the info on Revo website;
Rolling Roads Explained
Rtech is 1.5hrs away from me, Bill is 3hrs away, which I'd be happy to travel, just slightly confused which is more beneficial now.
Would I actually gain anything from a rolling road, other than numbers?

Rolling roads reeeaaaallly test the car. Its arguable the dyno tune would be better and safer.
I guess it depends what mods are as to if the trips worth it.
If you have the bare minimum for stage 2 then get the revo. If you have more mods and really want to make the most of the money youve spent, travel to b5 or r-tech.
Your money, your call

Just had a stage 2 map on mine at Bill's would highly recommend going there well worth the trip. Have a read of my post "Badger5 stage 2 map" from yesterday.

you say you havent had a map before so just checking. but do you have the essential mods to go to stage 2? daz

Quite Frankly the revo's info on Dyno's is somewhat misleading, whilst having a few pertinent points. Worth pointing out Revo dont have a dyno of their own so far as I know.

Their dealers, (those who have invested) may well have a dyno, on which to log and test the car BEFORE a map, and AFTER so the optimum settings can be dialed in, to get the best from the software vs hardware. Its a controlled environment where the car is not being driven to extremely high speeds on the public road whilst looking at a laptop to judge whats occuring. Decent dyno's have full data logging as well as usual vcds/hi-speed logging, so the whole picture of performance and engine parameters can be monitored and reviewed. The Revo code, can then be dialed in with its setting of Ign and Boost. Whilst its adjustable in these two respects, its not adjustable in specific rpm/load points unlike someone making a custom map. If you have revo1 its an inexpensive upgrade to go to revo2 £50+vat + Tuner time £

A tailored bespoke custom map doen by someone who knows the me7 and 1.8t well will always out perform a generic code in my experience.
Beware of many touting "custom maps" however, as there are many scoundrels out there selling their bought in generic code as "custom" where its nothing of the sort.

you get before/after numbers from a dyno, so a "gain" is evident with Data to support it. As opposed someone telling you it "should be xyz bhp" without anything to prove it.

Yes dyno Lottery applies, and few dyno's correlate, but ones which do (with each other) are mine, JKM,RTech ion terms on bhp, and mine reads 16% lower torque figure than JKM,Rtech but match consistently in this respect.

Choose wisely. Its your motor at the end of the day

you will find those who make the arguement against Rolling roads, are usually those who dont have them, and have'nt invested in them. They are a tuning tool.. you get a before and after figure, and the gains are evident for all too see. No smoke and mirrors.

Good luck

Make sure you have mods to justify a stage 2 level of tune also...
what mods do you actually have?

bill I have REvo stage 1, I've just fitted a 3" downpipe so believe all that is required for stage 2 is a front mount?
also could you write over revo code? Or am I stuck with revo?

Thanks for the words of wisdom there Bill, it does put my mind at rest. You can understand my initial confusion though from info given!
Car currently has limited mods of stage 1 map by Celtic Tuning?, stainless cat back and K&N panel filter.
Further mods on the shopping list were (correct me if wrong);
  • Forge 008
  • N249 delete
  • Badger5 TIP
  • Jetex / JR induction
  • Relentless DP & sports cat
  • Relentless manifold (undecided?)
Would this lot be sufficient for a stage 2?
Car is currently in the bodyshop for minor cosmetics, as soon as its home I plan to get cracking

In my opinion, these cars are getting old now, and anything above a simple stage 1 should be fully custom. Then it doesn't matter what the mods are, as you tailor software to suit.

intercooling would seem to be missing off your list.
Water Meth is a nice addition on any k04 car also..

its a slippery slope.. of course :)

Given the ko4's tendancy to pump hot air when pushed, I'd say intercooling, and other charge temp control measures (WMI) should be absolutely top of the list for anyone hoping to extract decent reliable power from their ko4 setup.

List of mods looks good Si, one of the most important on there being the Badger5 TIP, which is absolutely essential if you want to get decent figures

Thanks for the advice Prawn, I've budgeted for fmic now!
The issue with me is, I'm impatient, and like to get everything done in one go - not good on the vanishing bank balance :scared2:
