Car had to be recovered today only a day after getting it back from Audi for replacement pads, after putting my foot down at the lights an enormous bang shook the entire car! Turns out that the bearing on the prop shaft had exploded! Sounded like I was dragging a load of tin cans behind me on the way home..I've only done 4000 miles and this happening so soon along with the brake squeal has really put me off, starting to regret not getting a C63 now :(

wow.... sorry to hear you're troubles. Most hyper cars have teething problems, pretty sure C63 Merc has had it's issues, best of luck getting things put right:thumbsup:

Not a nice thing to happen but seem to recall somone else had a prop fail and it was fixed in a day so not a huge worry. Curiousity, do you launch your car often?

Just the inconvenience of retuning it that gets on my nerves really. I've launched it three times since I got it and never had any issues to date, as you say though hopefully a quick fix!!

Interesting, at least now I have evidence that it's not the way I have been driving :D

Spent 3 hours cleaning it this morning then this happened as soon as I took it out, gutted!

Blimey, I didn't expect to hear about a prop failure. I've only experienced that once on a Westfield and it was properly scary bang in the transmission tunnel just under my arm! Bits of the prop flailing about smashed the water pump and spewed fluids everywhere. To this day a gut wrenching moment so I can understand how you feel. I owned one more kit car after that but several failures on that and I finally learned my lesson.

As in the other linked thread I'm glad my RS3 is standard and the warranty is intact.

Think they will be a recall on a new prop with a redesigned bearing race and outer sleeve unit?

Hmmm it seems to be mainly RS3's lunching propshafts. Only TTRS prop failure I know of is my own, but I did that from aggressive launches at santa pod.

Must be the extra weight the rs3 has to carry around I presume

Hi poverty ,it is a heavy load ,still waiting for better weather to use launch :) s3 stage 2+ was amazing as being a much lighter car...:)

hopefully audi sort this out soon & also do a recall on this as I be buying my rs3 in July...have to have second thoughts on getting a de-gutted cat & remap

I hope they do,also £839 for a remap plus the sps switch its not cheap!

Think mrc remap is £650 & revo is more money?? MTM remap is 1k...

Aparently the parts have to be ordered from Germany for the fix, lead time still hasn't been advised so I'm still unsure when I will get it back. Demanded a decent car in replacement and have been given an S3 sportback black edition through the RAC/Audi cover, it's decent but made me realise how much better the RS actually is!!

As far as the recall goes I've been told nothing will happen, in my opinion it's more that they will keep it quiet as they're embarrassed at the quality of the parts... will post again when I get an update

Hmm could be a good opportunity for an aftermarket tuner to design / build a cf prop....

Finchy256 mine went a few months back and it took them about 10 days to sort the problem as the parts were coming from germany, since they have fixed it everything seem's to be all good & i have launched it a good few times since then (fingers crossed).

Dont think this fault is just applicable to the RS3. I went through 2 propshafts on my old 08 plate S3 in the space of a year (it had 8k miles when I bought it and sold it with 19k)....apparently the top hat/mushroom had failed on both and I can recall afew other S3 owners saying they had the same problem.

Hello all.

I picked mine up today at midday. 62 plate 1800 miles. At 8pm tonight, same thing, BANG. Massive rattle from propshaft area. Presently being recovered to Audi. Oops

Holy Moly Oli thats not good....:wtf:

Is it still driveable to get to the nearest audi garage or is it full recovery from rac etc ?

Another prop shaft bearing problem..maybe audi should get there head out if there a@se & do something about this..

Oh dear... Not good but we can all be happy in the fact that they will get replaced should this happen I suppose!

Ha good effort Oli.

Under what conditions did it go? Launch, hard acceleration?

All confirmed, propshaft bearing has blown apart! Brand new S3 on route to me now :)

Got it back last night, everything is running ok. Found these under the car when the cover was taken off :wtf:

Are they sixers? would be great at school ;-)

Haha I know! They were full of grease before, guess they're from the centre bearing..think I'll keep them as a trophy

That's a couple that have blown after having work done at a dealer.
I wonder if the technicians are doing a launch control during test drives?
the ECU would log when the last launch control was done.
interesting to know.

sorry mates, my english is not perfect, what was broken ?!

thanks
