Have had the fairly common drivers door bouncing back when you go to shut it.
I have removed the door lock and given it a good soak in WD40 and cleaned it and greased it up but it still doesn't spring down to the fully open position.
It appears that some of the rubber coating of the latch is damaged and may have come off or is catching on something internally.
As a temp fix, I have lowered the stricker plate so that it forces the latch further down when being opened but is only a temp fix.
A new lock is approx £140 from TPS.

Has anyone taken the lock mechanism apart and sucsessfully cleaned and fixed this or similar issues?

My worry is if I strip it down, the thing will explode with springs and pins flying everywhere

No, the doors are fine. Its the lock mechanism that doesn't spring down to fully open.
Has anyone taken a lock mechanism apart with success?

for future reference I bought a lock off ebay fairly cheap, when that is fitted and working I'm going to try and take apart my old lock and I'll post up the results

Hi pal, if your talking about the actual bit that hooks round the striker plate on the body, I had the same problem with mine not fully opening when you open the door then when you go to shut the door it smacks against the striker plate as its gone back to closed position!
best thing I did without replacing it was just adjust the striker plate on the b pillar enough just to give it the momentum to open more and not go back on itself, took a few times trying to adjust it just enough but not too much but it's been fine since and I'll just keep it like that until it stops working again and I'll have to replace the mech but don't adjust it so doors out of line either!
