Bit of background info.

My high pressure fuel line (the metal one to the pump on the engine block) split last month. God only knows how! Anyway, had to remove the inlet manifold etc to replace it.

A week later, my car started to get random misfires on start up. But it only last for 30 seconds till the idle speed settles. The engine shakes a little and the car makes a weird farting noise! Almost sounds like a hole in exhaust. After its idled though, there are zero issues and no symptoms at all.

Checked the plugs and they all look fine. I replaced the air filter, run injector cleaner and changed the engine temp sensor so far. Also cleaned the throttle body. Replaced the crankcase breathers. My coolant gauge seems to take about 20mins to get up to temp, but can't see how a dodgy thermostat could cause misfires. Can't find any vacuum leaks anywhere. Had the HG tested via the coolant bottle test, and oil is clean. And no engine management light showing.

So hard to pin point as it only does it during startup and until the revs settle! WTF is it!?!?!? Drives perfect still

Would a coil pack cause issues just on startup???

Did a quick video so you guys/girls can hear the issue for yourselves.

All help appreciated! Pulling my hair out.

seems odd the fuel line split in the first place like build up of fuel pressure from blocked return or somthing.or just perished.nothing to do with the connections on the cold start secondary air pump?sure ive had somthing similar on a beetle!

There was actually a lump missing from the fuel line! Reckon it was damaged when the previous owner had the timing belt done.

I'm certain its a vacuum issue too, but damned if I can see or hear it!

And FSI engines don't have SAIS

lump missing??not crap been pushed into an injector causing an obstruction.guess you have sprayed around intake

Just looked like something had knocked it. If it was an injector, it have guessed it would always been an issue at idle. Not just the first 20 seconds or so.

Anyone else think they can shed some light?

Sorry only just seen the reply to this.

What makes you think the cam follower??

Just replaced the thermostat and the local garage has spent about 5 hours on it, but still can't find the issue.

Drives fine.....just misses on start up. So annoying!!!!!!

Where you based???
local garage will be clueless
You need a specialist audi are def not lol!
Only just watched the vid does not sound nice at all.
Cam follower is under fuel pump there is a guide on here somewhere part is cheap and only takes 30mins at most to change.
Not saying it is your problem but it will need changing
have a look on this thread fella!

Are you getting a Check engine light/fault codes?

Try replacing the fuel filter and N80 valve first off as they are the cheapest fixes. Then I would look at coil packs and new plugs. Definitely worth checking/replacing the cam follower as above to.

Report back if you dont have any joy with that. How many miles and is it a turbo FSI or NA?

Its a NA 2.0 FSI mate.

Had no fault codes what so ever. That is the most confusing bit!

Changed the crankcase breather a few weeks back, so I know that is all fine.

Had a look for the cam follower guide, but I can't find it anywhere :( Can someone point me in the direction of the part code etc?

Thanks, James

Cheers dude!

Slightly different to mine as mines a N/A 2.0FSI, so the layout is a bit different.

I'll have a look tonight and see if I can work it out though.

Hi,

I have exactly the same issues and sound etc on my b6 1.8t. So annoying.

it could be cam follower wear
and 20 mins to get to 90 have you had the CTS changed that can cause all sorts of weird problems

on listening to the video..... split/leaking egr pipe??

This has been sorted now. Thermostat was fudged!

My thoughts are with the cam follower or egr leak to be honest!

Anyone know what this thing is? Runs out the side of the air box. The hose disappears off to a sensor, then into the bulkhead.

What does it do?

Making one hell of a whistling noise!

Finally got the car of VCDS again (big thanks to Adi Nuff Valves)

Got a load of codes. Few are red herrings though I think as I unplugged the EGR valve to check that. And also unplugged the Throttle plugs to check that.

Any thoughts on this lot.

you should have cleared the codes
then had a drive then rescan
to see what codes come back they could all be old codes

All codes were cleared about 2 weeks ago, so these are all new.

i get you but with what you unpluged it can show other codes that aint realy there cos u unpluged things

Audi replaced the coil packs last week under warranty. No difference at all. Say its pretty safe to said its not an ignition issue.

So either air or fuel related then!

Going to check the cam follower tonight.

Nope. Still chugging along and loosing coolant slowly! :ermm:

Is it only from a cold start or both cold and hot start?

The NOx heater fault I presume is the lambda heater circuit. The lambda probe doesn't work very well til they are up to temperature hence the heater element. If its not heating then its possible that it is giving incorrect readings when starting until it heats up with normal exhaust gas flow hence the misfire disappearing.

Just a theory.

Sounds very viable.

Yer, only from cold.

Still loosing coolant very slowly though, so figured thats related to it. But no signs to show head gasket failure and can't see any leaks!

Very odd all this! Since you mentioned this, I have noticed a which knocking noise (like a solenoid click) from near the passenger footwell. Only hear it once the car has been running, then ignition off.

Well....further investigation shows this is where the G295 nOX sensor is!!! Does this have any moving parts or solenoids though?

Don't really wanna fork out shy of £400 for a sensor, so is there anyway to test it?

Did anyone manage to get to the bottom of this?

according to a german source there is a map update from audi that disables the nox sensor, which i will look into

But this startup misfire has now grown onto the rev range and i get a very slight flappy misfire noise in sync with the revs.

I just get the nox sensor fault codes and nothing else

the car has had a full service new belt , waterpump, thermostat , oil cooler , oil, filters , plugs and fresh coilpacks

this is driving me mad as i never intended to keep this car but it just wont run right!

the only thing i have noticed with VCDS is that one of the cam voltages is slightly off

Hi, my audi a3 2.0fsi made the same start up noise as yours and only lasted for about 30 seconds. After a few months of it doing this it began to do it when accelerating and didn't sound nice at all. On investigation we took off the manifold heat shield and the underside of the shield was all black which would indicate a hole somewhere around there.
On closer inspection to the manifold we found quite a large crack running almost all the way around one of the pipes on the manifold.
We took the manifold off, welded the crack up and put a new gasket on and now on every start there is no noise at all and sounds absolutely perfect!
