Towbar Removal

Hi

My A4 has the a horrible towbar on it :crying:
And has the two light sockets connections which I out after meant that the car was used to tow a caravan :puke2:

Could this have done any damage to the car/ clutch or gearbox?

Anyway I plan on removing it fairly soon

Is it a job for a 'DIY' mechanic or would I have to take it to a real mechanic to get it removed?

What exactly is involved, removing the rear bumper? and what about the electrics of cutting the wires and light connections?

Also I've heard a friend says if you remove a towbar there is some other part you have to fit back on the chassis?

really easy to remove

pull back the lining in the boot and you will find 3 or 4 10mm nuts for the bumper remover these and pull the bumper

lift up the floor and look for the 4 bolts holding the towbar remove them and pull it off detach the wiring hopefully its just scotch locks and they come off easy

yes there is a aluminium bumper bar that goes in its place

I don't have the aluminium bar, would it be important?

What would happen if I just put the back on the bumper with out the bar?

It seems like a simple enough job so Think I'll give it a go

Is the bumper hard to line up when fitting it on ?

Also you wouldn't happen to know would the towbar off my 2004 B6 A4 fit a 2004 B5.5 passat?
 
Not sure if A4 cab is the sam, but I bought my car wiithout a towbar but when removing the bumperto fit reverse sensors I found it had been cut out underneath and a towbar had been fitted before I owned it. Anyway the point I am trying to make is that I was glad I removed the bumper as the crossbar that sits under the bumper was missing. It is a crash bar that takes a rear end shunt and transfers the impact enegrgy along the chasis. You need one if it isn't fitted. In the picture below. The crossbar has two square arms that slot into the square holes above the exhausts, in the chasis either side of the car. Bolts then hold it in place down from inside the boot. Bought mine from a chap that was breaking one on ebay. £40 make sue you get hrizontal bar and the two arms and the 4 bolts.

Yet can't go wrong when lining the bumper up it just slots in to place!

And as above for the bumper bar you need it really or you could leave the towbar in place and just remove the parts so you can't see it!

Hoping to give this a go, once I locate the crash beam from a breakers yard
 
Thats the same as my one, i was just going to take the bumper off and cut the bit that the toball is actually mounted to off and leave the crash bar that there. Cant be bothered waiting for a crash bar to turn up!

Yes I spotted that alright, thats actually what I plan to do now, remove the bumper and then just remove the 'neck' of the towbar,

Maybe the sockets could be pushed up behind the bumper alright, If not I'll follow the wires back to the rear lights and remove the splice clips,

Just have the towball off for now :cool:
 
Just a quick update to this tread, I have since removed the towbar:

Looks more like a car now :sm4:

However I have since picked up a s line rear bumper would it fit over this?:

As I don't fancy removing the rest of the towbar, so the new s line bumper would really cover the rest of the towbar and you would never think there was a towbar on it at all in the first place :rock:
