S3 making very loud motor noise on startup??

As above occasionally when I start the car there is a very loud noise like a motor scared hell out of me first time happened I realised noise is coming from something mounted near the oil filter not had car on ramps yet so not had a proper look. Can't sear h as I don't have a clue what to search for lol. Somebody solve this mini mystery for me please :)
 
How long does it last for? If it's a second or so, it could be the starter motor dragging. This is where the solenoid that engages the starter with the engine doesn't open properly when you let go of the key after starting. The result is the starter disengages over a second or so making a racket in the process as the two cogs disengage.

I had it on my Ibiza and just lived with it for several years - however it can damage both the gear on the starter (which is ok as you can replace the starter), but if it messes up the bit it engages with on the engine that can be more troublesome.
 
auxiliary air pump happens on first start up of the day normally mounted on the block behind the air con pump some people remove them all together posts about that on here I disconnected the wire onmine and it was ok for a while then it put the engine management light on so I changed it for a second hand one
its something to do with the emissions system adds more air to reduce them at certain times

Yeah if it's a graunchy squeal that's there after you release the key on starting it's probably the starter motor.

I replaced the one on my '98 A3 last year as it was making that noise, I took the motor off to grease it and it fell apart :( so I had to get a new one.

I found a place on ebay that sold them, they were based in Higham Ferrers, and picked one up the next day. It was a new pattern part and came with a 2 yr warranty. Never had any trouble with it. Much cheaper than the one from the stealer or ECP.

It was also a pretty easy swap once you have removed the battery tray.

Common on these starters because of wear to the clutch and dmf plus old grease. Easy to dissasemble, clean and grease up the planetry gears and the noise will go away. Done it many times.
 
Also check the secondary air pump, the pipe splits sometimes & water gets into it causing no end of issues, this unit isnt running all the time, only for a few minutes on startup & then not always, it was bottom left side of my engine, follow the small pipe inch or so diameter pipe coming from the airbox down across front of the engine to a unit, see if unplugging power to this stops the noise, then you'll know for sure.
 
Definately the air pump thought that's what it was as followed pipe from air box. So it's normal to happen occasionally then? Sounds ****** awful thought the turbo had come to life on its own lol. So now I've fitted a cone filter what should I do with the pipe that was in the air box?
 
I had same prob on my Mk 5 gti after I got it chipped and fitted a forge blow of valve
 
Stick a small filter on end, I got one from BMC when I fitted my CDA, so it doesnt suck in any crap into the system it feeds, you ideally need to change the pump out as it is ******** by sounds of it.
 
ok thanks done some reading and there is a guide to tighten it open when rivets break so il take a look when get chance. thanks :)
