Got the audi booked in at my mates garage tomorrow, mileage is currently sitting around the 84 thousand mark so ive decided to bite the bullet and get the cambelt changed knowing my luck it will go if I decide to not have it done.

So having the cambelt done aswell as the fan belt which is squeeling every so often, also going to have a big service on it as its due one of them aswell, suppose its a fare whack to spend on the engine but least it will be running mint once all completed :)

Get the water pump changed while the cambelt is off, this is common practice.

oh right, why is this, just because it is exposed once the cambelt is being done?

Kind of its for peace of mind as there are reports of the impellers coming off the old water pump after a cambelt change.

... and cos the most expensive bit of changing the water pump is getting there in the first place, so changing it while the cambelt is being done makes every kind of sense...

Sounds like a £550 job to me depending on engine. Btw that's at a good independent. Audi will prob be nearer or over £700.

had it all sorted yesterday called my mate and he got me a kit that included the water pump, cant believe how much crap was in the fuel filter. air and cabin filter tho lol.

Coupled this with a full tank of super diesel and im laughing :)

I take it that you've got the TDi 170?

Sorry for the newbie question - not hijacking! While on that subject, does anyone know (silly question, I know!) if the 140 need the cambelt changed too, or is it chain driven?

mine is the 140 lad, yeh cambelt not chain

Uuurgh, I'll never fail to understand why they don't make all engine cams chain driven. It just makes so much more sense.
