Ambient lighting for rear lights.

Get ambient light unit out of a front light from a scrappy, drill two holes, have to strip down and glue ambient light unit internals in as there are no clips for the rear, then solder to these terminals.

Vagcom adaptations such as setting anti-hijack, full closure alarm, etc.

x 2

Autolocking of doors above 15mph.
Confirmatory horn beep on locking car via remote keyfob.
1 press on remote to unlock drivers door/ 2 presses to unlock all doors.

All free mods if you have the cable etc and all very worthwhile IMHO, in fact the best you can do for free............

AudiWorld Tech Articles

It says A6, but it works perfectly on the A4.......

Yes, its not totally free as you have to have the cable/software but I just used a cheapy Ebay copy lead (about £15 IIRC) and used the free limited-functionality version of VagCom to change my settings.
Did this about 5 yrs ago now so a little hazy as to what exact code I changed it to, but I also managed to get a seatbelt warning light to flash up on the dash each time the car is started, although it is a tad useless, lol.
I'd forgotten that window/sunroof close with the remote wasn't standard and was enabled doing this mod.....
Definitely one of the best mods I've done to the car though, makes life with it so much more enjoyable.

Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage or problems that may result from following these instructions. They are to be used at your own risk.

Specific Modules:

01-Engine: -- KWP-1281
VCDS works well with all engines available in the U.S. and most engines that users have tested in overseas markets.

Idle Speed Adaptation:

With engine warmed up, at idle:

[Select]
[01 engine]
[Adaptation - 10]
Enter channel 01
Enter an adaptation value between 124 and 132
[Save]

(May require a Login of 01283 or 11463, depending on year or model)

Throttle Body Adaptation:

Turn the key on but do not start the car.

[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Enter Group 060 (may be Group 098 on some cable-throttle cars)
[Go!]
[Switch to basic settings]

Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB
adaptation is being done as soon as you switch to basic settings. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in basic mode for about 30 seconds, then switch back to normal settings and you're all set.

Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!

02-Auto Trans : -- KWP-1281
VCDS works fine

Recoding Tiptronic:

In the newer cars, there are coding options for "Old" vs "New" "Tiptronic strategy". The "New" stategy (introduced in 2000 I think) is much more "automatic" than the old. To get the "Old Tiptronic strategy" where it won't downshift unless you come to a complete stop, I believe you have to change the coding in the following manner:

[Select]
[02 - Auto Trans]
[Recode - 07]
Enter the coding below
[Do It!]

Write down the original coding for future reference.

Look at the fourth digit in the coding (Cylinders):

0 or 1 - "New-style Tiptronic"
2 - "Old-style Tiptronic"

Look at the fifth digit in the coding (Market version):

1 - "Rest of world, quattro"
2 - "USA, quattro"
3 - "Rest of world, FronTrak"
4 - "USA, FronTrak"

So, for a USA model A4 quattro, if the original coding is 00002, and you want to change to the "Old-style Tiptronic" strategy, change the coding to 00022.

PS: As always, you play with stuff like this at your own risk. The "old" strategy is documented by VW only for "testing" and they explictly say that the car should be recoded the way it was before giving it back to the customer.

03-ABS Brakes: -- KWP-1281
VCDS works fine

08-HVAC: -- KWP-1281
VCDS works fine

15-Airbags: -- KWP-1281
VCDS works fine

17-Instruments: -- KWP-1281
VCDS Works fine.

Immobilizer Procedures in the Ross-Tech Wiki

Note: US/Canada model Audi A4/S4 do not have Immobilizers.

Recode for warning lamps (through 1999 only):

[Select]
[17 - Instruments]
[Recode - 07]
Write down the existing coding for future reference.
Enter 5-digit code from below
[Do It!]

Look at the first two digits in the coding. Add the values for the options together to get the correct coding.

00 - No available equipment
+01 - Brakepad wear sensor warning active
+02 - Seatbelt warning active
+04 - Washer fluid level warning active (may only work with pre-2000 models)
+16 - Navigation System (non-USA models)

Look at the third digit in the coding (Market version):

0 - "Germany" 24 hour clock
1 - "Rest of World" 24 hour clock
2 - "USA" 12 hour clock
3 - "Canada" 12 hour clock

Look at the fourth digit in the coding (Cylinders):

4 - 4-cylinder
6 - 6-cylinder

Look at the fifth digit in the coding (Distance impulse multiplier):

0 - TDI Engine (non-USA models)
2 - Non-turbo Gasoline engine
4 - Turbocharged engine

So, if you want to have Seatbelt warning and washer fluid warning only in a 1999 Canadian A4 2.8, (add 00+02+04 = 06),3,6,2 = 06362.

A complete instrument cluster coding chart which includes 2000 and newer cars is available in the Ross-Tech Wiki.

Change Language Displayed:

[Select]

00001 - German
00002 - English

22-AWD – Purely Mechanical!
The quattro system in these cars is purely mechanical, no electronics at all. This address is used by the Haldex system used in transverse-engine cars like the TT, the A3, and various Golf/Bora models.

35-Central Locks: -- KWP-1281
VCDS Works fine (note: pre-'97 A4's may not have this module).

Recode locking options

[Select]
[35 - Cent. Locks]
[Recode - 07]
Enter the coding below
[Do It!]

Write down the existing coding for future reference.

A4 pre-1998 with Delta radio and anti-theft system
Standard Coding: 03468

A4 pre-1998 with Delta radio, anti-theft system and keyless entry
Standard Coding: 12172

A4 1998+ with Concert/Symphony radio and anti-theft system
Standard Coding: 03340

S4, A4 1998+ with Concert/Symphony radio, anti-theft system and keyless entry
Standard Coding: 16140

Add the following options to your coding number:

+64 Windows up, sunroof close, and windows down with remote.
-04 One touch unlock of all 4 doors and trunk
-1024 Remove horn honk when arming
+32 Auto lock/unlock of doors (Doors lock at 15 mph and unlock when key is removed)

So, if you want to have a 1999 A4 with Concert radio and anti-theft system and keyless entry, and you want to add window control with the remote along with auto-lock, then:
add 03340+64+32= 03436

37-Navigation: -- KWP-1281
VCDS Works fine.

45-Int. Monitor: -- KWP-1281
VCDS Works fine (note: This is tied in with 35-Central Locking so it may not work with pre-'97).

Sensitivity Adjustment

[Select]
[45 - Int. Monitor]
[Adaptation - 10]
Enter channel 01
Enter a value between 50-100 (it should be 100 by default) for the sensitivity of the ultra-sound sensors
[Save]

55-Headlight Range: KWP-1281
VCDS Seems to work fine.
Note this controller is only present on cars with Xenon headlights.

56- Radio: – KWP-1281
Please read the following pages pertaining to Audi Concert and Symphony Radios.

I found this really usefull and have kept it in my notes lol the misses hates auto locks especially when it's raining and I forget the doors are locked lol

Anyone know if the Vagcom adaptations above like

Autolocking of doors above 15mph.

Confirmatory horn beep on locking car via remote keyfob.
1 press on remote to unlock drivers door/ 2 presses to unlock all doors.

would work on an audi a3 8l 2002?

Thanks

Does this not affect emissions?

any warning lights come on?

It does affect emissions, in so far as no more ruddy smokescreen behind you whenever you give it some welly!
I only did this mod about a week ago, haven't actually removed any of the EGR pipes etc , instead fitted a relatively thin stainless plate (1.2mm thick) being sold as a blanking plate, so using mine as a solid gasket really!
Has the same effect as using one of those thick blanking plates (loads of them are 3-4mm thick on Ebay) but engine bay looks totally stock.
My car has a tuning box and had always assumed the smoke on heavy acceleration was caused by that; nope!
I now can't get it to smoke, wish I'd done it years ago, and low-down pickup has been transformed.
The best car-related £3 I have ever spent.
And definitely no warning lights evident either.

Can't see why not.
Look in the central locking section.

A4 Coding the Control Module
Article By: John Stahmann - 2000

It's been so long since I recoded my car (7 yrs) that I really cant remember what it had as standard?
I think though that it came with indicator flash on locking from the factory and that I added the horn beep as it was all too easy to miss the lights flash when locking and I was forever going back to the car to check it was actually locked? lol
The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that this is the case.....

EDIT
If you look at that article, all of the coding settings list *lights flash when arming , so it doesn't appear to be addable or removeable.
On that basis, I'd say your car should already have it, supposing it has factory flip-key remote locking?
If it doesn't flash when arming try one of those codes, just make a record of your old code in case you need tio revert back to it!

The early cars with the 4A0 pump dont respond to vagcom afaik, its essentially a "dumb" box.

It should go "boop" though when you lock it?

If it doesnt go "boop" either the horns disconnected, or its a later 8L/8D pump, which should flash the indicators by default...

Well had a play with VCDS Lite 1.2 and changed the settings on the central locking no problem. Have added the hazzard flash on locking and removed the horn hoot, but may put that back, even added the anti hijack :)

Downside is I can't seem to reset my IN1 indicator as it says my software isn't licenced :(

Any idea how I get round this as I don't want to pay $99 for that privilidge?

Got a replacement set of buttons for my key, only £2 on eBay. Not genuine obviously but to be fair seem ok(for now at least)
centre key has new buttons, left is the genuine set and right is the old buttonsImage

i have done a few cheap\ free mods ones i seen other places and one i came up with on my own ill include pix later on all my mods...my car is a 2000 a4 b5 quattro facelift with an atw engine.. ill answer any questions you may have if i can before all mods my k03 had a peak boost of 7-8 psi fyi..

first off some of these are cheap while others are free like my original mod that is a bit hairy and do at your own risk if you dont feel comfortable doing it i suggest you dont cause you can screw up your turbo pretty bad

1) swapping out the stock are box for two cone filters (KEEP OLD AIRBOX FOR SMOG PURPOSES UNLESS YOU BUY K&N)
2) vent pod boost gauge, (ITS A MUST HAVE FOR ALL BOOSTED CARS)
3) blacking out all chrome except for badges including blacking out wheels except for audi symbol
4) blinking halos around xenons if you have xenons
5) vacuum delete
6) re-circulation valve swap
the last 2 are not for the faint of heart and can potentially cause some damage if you do something wrong

7) spring mod (this is where you attach a small spring to a waste gate that no longer can hold the original pressure ie old and worn dont over due it youll be sorry)get it back to the 7-8 psi it was originaly at)mine would only hit 2 psi before it would open thats why i did the spring mod

8)last but not least i wont go into details here but if you want to know how i get 12-15 psi with a stock k03 and no chip pm me and ill tell you
