My A4 Avant 1.8T quattro.

Thought I'd put up a few pictures of the new family motor.
Planned mods are;

HID's [done]
LED side lights [done]
New brodit mount for my phone [done]
New expansion tank [done]
Engine degrease and clean, then add left and right covers [done]

Still to do;

Cruise,
Full DIS,
RNS-E (everything bought, just waiting on the RNS-E shipping)
B7 RS4 pedals and footrest,
Reversing camera,
Footwell lights,
Black out chrome trim on upper and lower grilles.

I'll keep this thread updated as I go, will be doing a full piccie run-through of the RNS-E, DIS and cruise installs.

Engine after a bit of a clean up, new expansion tank and a couple of covers (the right cover was given me by a work mate, why it's cut at the bottom I've no idea. But it was free);

Random as I was giving her a bit of a going over;

It's just the standard exhaust. The tips were bought and welded on by the previous owner :salute:

Not much done today James. Seriously wild out there. I did remove bonnet grille and start with the de-chrome tape, but couldn't get it right. So ordered some Plastidip rubber paint and I'll paint next weekend.
Then SWMBO started nagging that I needed to finish grouting some tiles in the bathroom. So to keep the peace and all that.

Got a flyer from work tonight, so thought I'd take advantage of the dry weather and paint the chrome around the grilles. Forcast says it's going to be another crap weekend. There's a surprise :banghead:

I've painted grilles before with normal satin or matt black spray paint, but after a while they always chip.
The jig tech lads use this stuff at work for various things, and it's brill. Doesn't chip and is very hard-wearing. It's basically rubber in a can and leaves a mat finish. Very easy to spray on, you'd have to REALLY try to get it to run.
Dries extremely quickly too.
I was able to handle both grilles after 6 coats, in about 35 mins without marking the finish.
I roughed up the chrome with a 120 grit flap wheel on my trusty dremel, then rubbed in down to get rid of finger prints etc, with some thinners.
It doesn't require an undercoat.

Speaking of RNS-E's. As said earlier, I had to buy another after getting stung with the first. Bought one off fleabay and the guy selling got in touch to say on testing it, it had a blue line in one corner and offered me a discount if I still wanted it, or a full refund. Took the refund. Very honest seller, so hats off to him.
Bought yet another, paid for next day delivery, so should be here tomorrow. Hopefully do it Sunday. All being well.

Indicators on the offside started flashing fast, meant a bulb off.
Was the bulb in the headlamp. Whipped it out only to be faced with this;

WHY??? I hate bodges.

To be honest, the headlamps were a bit pitted and I know yes you can polish them up, but I've not got a lot of time at the minute.
Can't go and just replace the drivers either, or it'll just look odd. Plenty of OEM looking aftermarket lamps on ebay, but I wanted genuine.
Managed to pick up two new genuine lamps BNIB's off fleabay for good prices (different sellers)
Fitted yesterday. Checked aim at my local specialists and all ok.

what a difference. HID's (35w 6000k) and new headlamps = BRIGHT.

The old lamps are off to quattroJames for experimental purposes..

Looks great now, the Diadems look quite blue? I fitted Silverlines (I think..) to mine and they do tidy it up nicely.

I've got a set of 15 LED's waiting to go in, the 9 LED's I bought from your original recommendation several years ago have lost a few LED's each side, the nearside one even throws up an error code some mornings :ohmy:

Wow, they've lasted a good while James. The ones I had in the S2 lasted a good while, but then the nearside started flickering.
These 15 LED are bright. Probably the brightest I've tried yet.

The diadems do have a blueish coating yes mate. I tried some silverline versions in the A6 but they didn't last that long. The diadems I'd fitted to the S2 way back in 2004 were still going strong when I sold her.
7 years out of a set of bulbs isn't bad going, so thought I'd go the same route again.

It's 3M scotchprint 1080 RF-12. (for a matt finish, use the 3M Di-Noc)
Bought through ebay from this seller >>>> here <<<

I bought a fairly large sheet as I had some stuff to do on my mates B6.
Think it was around 40x150cm, but as said, I needed more than I used on my car alone.

******** up my drivers side window regulator last Sunday night. I'd washed the car during the day, but it was so cold the water kept freezing when rinsing and drying. Gave up in the end.
Not thinking, I was on my way to work Sunday night (what a crap shift that is, 10hrs of sunday nightshift) and tried to drop the drivers window.
TWANG/THUD.

After speaking to the guys at my local specialists, they advised a new genuine regulator/lifter mechanism rather than an aftermarket repair kit from Fleabay. While they'd not done a B6 regulator before, they have done other A4 and A6 models using these repair kits and they don't last long.
So, Tuesday morning saw a new regulator/lifting mechanism fitted and the guess of a snapped cable was right. Took around an hour or so.

Window lifter mechanism - 8E0 837 462C = £92.90 inc VAT from TPS,
Door card trim clips - 8E0 868 243 = 56p inc VAT each (I needed 5 in total)

Thought I'd add this for future searches.
I came across this video on the tube and it is pretty much exactly as my mechanic did mine.
I'd have defo used it if I'd have been doing it myself;

Thought I'd pop this in here, although I'm 1000% sure everyone with a 1.8T will be well aware of this issue.
I'd not experienced any problems, but since I bought her back in August it's been niggling in the back of my head to act first rather than just hope my engine would be one of those that might get away with it.

Had the car into local specialists to get the sludge issue checked and they found this;

A random picture leeched from the net of what it should look like when new;

My local specialists removed the sump, cleaned it out, replaced the oil pickup tube and I also asked them to replace the oil pump as a precautionary measure.
They also cleaned a few breather hoses out that were bunged up with carbon-y hard deposits.
New oil and filter of course.
Lucky escape me thinks as this would have got worse and the engine may have popped.

Parts not that expensive;

Pickup tube = 06B 115 251 @ £7.30 + VAT
Seal for above = N0 282 222 @ £2.49 + VAT
Oil pump = 06A 115 105B @ £65.00 + VAT
The usual for oil (I use VAG Platinum) and a genuine filter.

That was done back in October because it was leaking a bit.

Autodim rear view mirror fitted. It's from a 2003 A3, £24 bargain from fleabay.
Easy enough job again.
Wired into a couple spare terminals inside the interior light. Switched 12v when the lights are switched on.
Six pins on the autodim light, I only needed pins 1 and pin 2 (1 = switched 12v and 2 = earth)
Everything self explanatory from the pics. Third time I've done this on various cars (S2 and A6)

The couple of spare terminals. The top one is the earth.

Finger covering the light sensor on the rear, tricking the dimmer into thinking it's dark. Light present on front sensor means it dims down.

Quick 5 minute job this.
Used a high temp adhesive (silicone based) to glue it in place. I'd already etch primed the rear of it to stop any possible Stainless Steel/Aluminium reaction going on.
Camera phone pics, so not brilliant.
