Gear Box & Diff Oil Change

I asked Audi about the gearbox oil, and apparently they are sealed for life so the oil doesn't need changing. Not sure about the diff

I changed my gearbox oil last year, you must use AUDI spec gearbox oil.. I will post up teh part numbers later

Audi state that the gearbox and diffs are sealed for life......

However lots of people change the gearbox oil, just make sure you use the genuine Audi oil, as for rear diffs have never heard of anyone doing this, it's only a requirement for vehicles with Haldex electronic 4wd systems...... B6 models use torsen mechanical items....

CMD did the G box feel any better/different following the oil change

No to be fare. I just done it as part of a service along with I wanted to change it (6 years old)

Ok, CMD thanks for your reply

Dont know if this helps anyone with a manual but had to have the gearbox oil replaced on my 2.5tdi tiptronic cos someone ,not me,inadvertently undid the drain plug when doing an oil service. The fluid which came out was black and of course the car had to be recovered to Audi to replace the fluid. The bill showed the job under Multitronic when I queried this they said they had no set up to show a Tiptronic cos its supposed to be sealed forlife.Anyway no harm done except the £155 cost and I believe its better but that may be wishful thinking. Some research seemed to show that the suppliers of these units recommend a fluid change every 100k and mines on 115k

Had all my fluids replaced at the last service and i have to say GL4 and GL5 fluids are expensive. The mechanic who drained the old out said it was completely broken down and definitely needed replacing. Glad it was done.

I was told the oil is 'sealed for life' too, but no harm in changing it. My 1st to 2nd gear seems better in the cold as a result, and the old oil was pretty thin and black.

I got the genuine stuff, at main dealer parts prices it was about £86 though. Still, it hadn't been changed for 120,000 miles, and probably won't need doing again!

I think it was 2.7 litres for the gearbox, and 1.5 litres for the rear diff, though it was specific and different oil for the gearbox and diff.

AG 051 911 A2 - Gearbox Oil - 3 x 1ltr bottles £14.97 excl VAT each

AG 052 145 A1 - Diff Oil - 3 x 0.5ltr bottles £8.75 excl VAT each

I have the 5 speed box though, so yours might be different, just check, but the parts guy said it was the same for all the quattro's. I had to buy a splined drive socket with the hole in the middle to remove the gearbox drain plug, and used a piece of hosepipe and funnel to refill. Check your fill plugs will come out before you drain too, my rear diff one was a pig to get out!

If its like my 2.5tdi there will be a filler plug on the side but check if it needs an expert cos mine needs temp controlled filling

I've heard the gear oil changes need to be temperature controlled so I won't be attempting this myself. Popped in to Audi Warrington today and they're gonna call me back on Monday with a price once speaking to the master tech. Apparently it's 0.9 hrs (or 54 minutes labour) plus the fluids. Will update if I get a price.
No oil can be too clever after 174K and god knows how many gear changes.

Sounds like a load of BS to me, myself and friend done mine last October and have had no issues or problems.

Agreed .This only applies to the auto boxes and I helped change theoil on an S3 recently which is fine

The only Temperature control required is like changing the oil in the engine, needs to be hot to get it all out!!!

It will be minging when it comes out mind. mIne had done 180k
