TDI's. What's the difference? How can you tell them apart? Its only for daily so power isn't that important. Should I go for a 170 or a 140?

You can tell visually - the exhaust pipes on the 140 are turned down, 170 there straight.

I'm sure others will be a long to give their opinion in due course on how the engines differ.
 
I've had both and I much prefer the 170, i like the extra power for overtaking but there is a trade off in MPG but not much
 
Just get a 140 and a DTUK box, 175bhp and extra mpg. Win Win!

Depending on mileage, a 140 might save you a bit of money - plus it's cheaper to start with. If you don't do much overtaking or full throttle driving, you probably won't care and would be wasting a 170. I drive on single-carriageway A-roads a lot, so the ability to get past a lorry matters more than a couple of MPG that adds up to a couple of quid a tank. It sounds to me like the 140 would be plenty for you: it's still a reasonably quick car.

I have a 2009 2.0 TDI 140 common-rail engined Sportback and mine had twin exhaust pipes. Speaking to an Audi Master Tech a year or so ago he said that the only difference between the current 140 CR and the 170 CR engines was the size of turbo used.
 
Go test drive both. When I got mine I tested a few out and decided to go for a 140 with DSG. Maybe I'm a bit numb or just terrible at changing gear but to me the 140 DSG only felt a baw hair slower than the 170 manual that I tested. As ever I'd imagine the differences in the figures look bigger on paper than they actually are on the road.

I haven't had mine done Yet. You have a DPF delete when getting a remap on DPF engines unless you only want upto 200bhp.
I'm going to wait a while or ill get bored of having the power, want more but have to folk out big money for the next step.

My 2.0 TDI-140 has been remapped to around 170. It was done over two years ago and I have had no problems at all with the DPF. The problem with removing the DPF is that I'm sure sometime in the not too distant future a diesel car will need a DPF to meet the emission standards as they are gradually changed and a car that had a DPF when it was manufactured and has subsequently had it removed will fail an MOT. It is already unlikely that a petrol engined car that has has it's catalytic converter removed will the the MOT emission tests.

I was going to get mine mapped and bin the dpf but i now have an injector issue and manifold intake runner control (basically the throttle body) has jammed open so the car is doing 28 mpg at the moment which is less than the mapped vxr i had so i think i will be sorting these issues out and selling it instead.

If i had known now when buying i would have bought a 140 and mapped it, the 170 has been nothing but hassle and the dpf plays up all the time and the mpg is pretty poor, i think at max i have had 45 mpg where as a fellow work mate gets on average 45 with long journeys he gets 55mpg and thats a 140.

I was reading lately thats it will be cars of a certain age and mine being a 56 (2007) i was going to be ok. on the quattro model there is no replacement pipe so the original DPF gets the guts removed and welded back up so on apperance it is still there but i think the smoke out there rear may give the game away.

I test drove a mapped quattro which had had the dpf removed and it was quick but it smoke more than an old bus to the point the cockpit filled up with smoke on start up with the door open so i didnt buy it.

Depending on the age, but from 2009 onwards both 140s and 170s are fitted with a DPF. Prior to my current car I had a 2007 2.0 TDI-170 and had no problems at all with the DPF on that either. In fact I never even say the DPF light come on.

I am just about to order another A3 because mine will be 3 years old in April and I tend to change my car every three years and there is a 4-5 month wait on a new one. The new 2012 A3 will be released some time next year but only in 3-door version. The Sportback is not due until 2013 and I like the existing one anyway. This time because of the problems related to remapping the latest ECUs - it can no longer be done through the diagnostic socket and the ECU has to be removed from the car - and the fact that with the 2012 MOT a car can be failed if it has obviously been remapped beyond the OEM specifications and also the insurance for a remapped car I think I will be going for a 170 again.

After all the DPF is there for a reason, to help to protect the environment and the people living in it. This may come low on some peoples list of priorities but it's quite important to me. After all Audi have spent a lot of money making their cars more environmentally friendly it does seem a bit silly for owners to try and turn the clock back.

As for the DPF doing its job, I have had mates following me and didn't believe it was a diesel as there was no smoke or smell even under hard acceleration. Definitely does its job but will definitely be coming off if they pass 2012's mot without :)

If it's so well why remove it?

If you do ever consider taking you car to German you will only be allowed to take it in to many cities and large towns if you have an Umwelt Level 4 disc and the only way you car get one of these is if your car is fitted with a DPF. As far as car emission standards are concerned German leads the way and eventually the UK catches up.

I'm worried about the Germany laws tbh. Planning on going there a few times a year. Reason I wanted it removed was for the custom code remap which requires the dpf to be removed to get its full potential. Is there a thread out the emissions law in Germany? I'd like to know what it entails.

Hey mate i would be happy to map mine and keep the DPF as you say its there for a reason and i kind of like the fact the tail pipes stay clean and the car doesnt chuck out smoke i just wish my one would behave lol!

I'm sure there must be suppliers out there who can provide a custom code remap without the need to remove the DPF. Mine was remapped from 140 to 170 without the need to make any other alterations.

As far as details about the Umwelt in Germany - here are three sites that may be of help. Germans can even get a subsidy to fit a DPF to cars that came without one!

Have had a 140 and two 170s. The 170 is noticably brisker than the 140 all round but you pay for it in higher MPG.

If you're not fussed about power/performance then stick with the 140, otherwise consider the 170 or a 140 with a remap :)

Press the (a) recirculation button, when you first start the car is prevents any of the diesel fumes to enter the cockpit for an amount of time. But then once on your way it allows fresh air to come in :)
 
Shouldnt smoke like that on startup after a remap - normally see it on full throttle perhaps. Mine didn't really smoke at all with DPF off though.
 
same here only smokes on hard acceleration mines the 170

Carbon Chip-Tuning in Altrincham did it for me. MPG is up a couple depending on how I drive it; long term average over the last 8000 miles is approx 46-48mpg;

Err current models are 140 single pipe, well mine is.

There is a lot of differences. Oil filters are different too fyi.
 
i bought a 170 quattro and was forced to do a dpf delete cos of dpf not regenerating then had a remap aswell pushing 203 bhp it cost me £600 big differance in tourqe no more smoke though even on hard acceleration a place called longlife done the dpf delete and remap plus the replacement pipe they make thier own exhausts his name is clive if interrested hope yhis helps
