I have a a3 1.8t but with the AEB engine not AUM but has
Ko3s engine must of been replace at some point with the a4 one
Anyway I'm sorry if I'm doing this wrong but I'm new lol

Right at between 4k and 6k I'm having stuttering / juddering
Hesitation
Had it scanned and brought up a code for cam speed sensor
Which I then replaced along with new coil packs
Fuel filter , maf , clutch , flywheel all via Audi
But the problem persists don't want to spend anymore money
On it but really love it and would like to go over 4k revs
Especially on motorway it's so annoying
Any suggestions please
Any info will be very appreciated
Thankyou and sorry if I posted it wrong but I'm new
Oh and in 1st gear it makes a popping noise under the bonnet at 5k revs

I'll move it to the relevant section-A3 8L

Thankyou wasn't even sure how to do a post lol

Does sound like it could be fuelling related so maybe fuel pump as suggested, I suspect that wouldn't necessarily throw a fault code unless someone knows different, would the fuel pressure drop and show one perhaps? not sure.

Has the car always done this or is it new?

You might have an AEB cylinder head but i doubt very much youll have the block too, totally different design external mounting wise.

Wow thanks for the welcome and speedy help
I'm gonna change the plugs tomorrow and I have noticed the insulating on some off the wiring has come away so I'll change the wiring too
How can I check the fuel pump ?
And does the AEB head fit the AUM block then
Once again thanks

You really need to get it logged on VCDS block 118 to see if it is running lean
All heads are pretty much the same apart from the vvt it was the mounts on the blocks that are different

Yes the car is new iv had it for two weeks as I let my a4 go
Didn't think to ragg it past 4k on a test drive
But it's a 2001 1.8t with ko3s I only paid 1200
So want to give it a chance

Ok thanks where would I find a vcds block 118

Do you have VCDS? It's the fault / diagnosis software from Ross Tech, runs on a PC and connects to car with special cable. Google it up if you're not sure what it's about or have a search of the forum.

Ok thanks I'm in south east London unfortunately lol

These are the codes a got from my friends
Snap on solus pro

17939 / p1531

16705 / p0321

Then I changed the cam speed sensor was this right ?

I doubt it'll be your fuel pump as you would normally get ' Fuel trim - System too lean' popping up

Log block 031 which will show lambda values, it'll give you an idea of what your air/fuel ratio is.

Have those codes come back since changing the sensor??

A lot of AEB's have a cam sensor wheel with one hole in it.

Your AUM should have a 4 window wheel.

If its still got the one window wheel fitted that will explain the cam sensor error your getting.

To check it, take the cam sensor off and have a look at the wheel behind do see if it has one slot or four slots.

It has one slot !
This could explain alot

So it has one slot rather than a 4 slot so if I change it to a four slot
The sensor will gather the right readings correct eliminating all the hesitation
Problems I have
I will try new plugs tomorrow and if no change then I'll get a 4 window cam wheel
Via Audi I guess and that should resolve my problems ?
I'll keep you all posted and once again thank you so much for all your help
So really appreciated
;)

Symptom of someone fitting the AEB head with the single window cam pickup. It needs the 4 window cam pickup to enable the ecu to deliver fully sequential fuel injection. Bet they fitted the head and gave up because they couldnt get it to run right!! Lol

The bonus from this is that you have a large port head which is beneficial if you want to embark on a little tuning! Is the AUM vvt fitted to the AEB head? If not then youll still get cam timing codes popping up, really this needs retrofitting to the head.

Lol what a mess, I bet that's what's happened they gave up on it, what is the aum vvt is it the four window wheel
And how much would the wheel be from Audi roughly

Once again thankyou

Is the 4 window part
Called a cam phase wheel ?

Aragorn you are a god
So appriciated
Thankyou

Plugs changed and no change lol
Impulse rotor due in tomorrow so I'll let you
All know if that was the problem
Finger crossed

Well iv changed the impulse rotor took it out
Still the same in first other gears are a bit better now but
Still juddering at 4 1/2 5k rev and can't go past that
Is it time to give up ?
Or is there something else it could be
I'm thinking about getting the AUM head but is it worth it as this problem
May still be their and it will be more wasted money

Has the cam sensor fault code gone away now?

Changing the head wont do anything imo.

Boost leak test would be a good call. Also logging to see what the MAF, AFR and various other values are doing.

Thanks mate
The code is still there but MUSH has helped
And we got to the conclusion that the vvt tensioner is missing
Well it's got one but it's manual not electric and the conector for it
Is hanging loose
Iv found a second hand part for £70 of a BAM head do you know if this will fit / work?
This must be the cause of miss fire ?

The vvt is now changed and still missing / juddering
How do I do a boost test because my boost gauge holds a 9 while it happens
And does not go past 5k rpm and sometimes quite lumpy up to it
With a popping noise between 4-5 k rpm
Oh and the engine died this afternoon and all lights went off the dash
But started fine , I just put injector cleaner in to as I'm out off ideas now !

Just had it driven by a turbo technician
And he said I'm getting detonation ??????
But couldn't tell me more as it's not booked in on their hourly rate I assume .
Anyone know what could cause detonation before I just scrap this piece of sh*t
And cut my losses ?

Could be detonation..might not be

Detonation is caused by cylinder temps being to high so the fuel pre ignites which makes cylinder pressures go way above where they should be

Logging block 031 will show you what your A/F is like, if you are running lean then it could be detonation because you'll be running a lot hotter than what you should

The popping noise is accullay valve clatter
Loggin block 031? What's this
Could it be a temp sensor ?
Really beginning to hate this car!!!!

Seriously Daz you need someone with vagcom/vcds to have a look at the car, check codes and maybe log a few block as suggested to get a better picture of it. That is assuming all basic checks have been carried out like timing/plugs/coilpack wiring/all connections checked.

I'm right on the boarder of Kent / Surrey mate
