Help! Went to close the tailgate on my 2003 avant yesterday, but it no longer latches closed. The handle still makes a noise when it's pulled, but the tailgate doesn't actually shut. I have tried pushing the latch in and pulling the handle and have locked, then unlocked the car as well. Any ideas? Is it a common issue?

Washer fluid from the wiper affects the micro switch inside. Take the lock out and dry it off and spray with contact cleaner and it will be good as new. In the mean time there is a tiny switch inside which you can flick with the key to make it work for now but you will have to do it every time you close the boot
Avant4me not quite sure what you mean. I took of the panel and the lock mechanism itself earlier. Do you know if the latch should click closed when disconnected from all the rods? Even with it disconnected, there is no resistance as such; I would have thought I could stick a screwdriver in the jaws and click it shut?

Been to the breakers yard. £18 later, replacement tailgate latch now fitted and it works perfectly
