Hi all, when I brought my car I ran VAG com and it showed that the signal for the engine temp sensor was impulsive, it was then that I noticed that the temp gauge didn't actually work. I located the sensor, pulled it out and gave it a clean and refitted and it worked. Next time I started the engine it had stopped working again. Fiddled with it again and it worked then a repeat next time I started the engine. Would this be a fault with the sensor or the connector? Cheers lee

Sensor is only ~£7 on eBay so change it and you would know. Bad temp sensor means tuning more fuel and to compensate for the fault and avoid getting lean therefore more money spent on fuel costs

As above, just replace it, its only a few quid to replace it.

Bought one for my wifes car last year, the old one was black but, the new one was green and threads on here were saying that the newer ones were green etc. Anyway, if you buy it from Audi you will get the correct one!

i have the same problem. my car tem gets warm stood still but goes cold on the run, it through up the code temp sensor but is the thermostat gone too???

Nope, nothing wrong with your Coolant Sensor in which case, that is simply the thermostat. End of.

Might change my thermostat as well. I saw someone comment recently that there is a knack of changing it without loosing hardly any fluid can anyone give me a heads up on what this nackered is because I have only just had the fluid changed when I had the water pump replaced

ok cheers welly,
so my car has the error code coolant temp sensor, my car wen sat still will rise to 90 however as soon as i start to drive i cools down to 60, is this then the thermostat and not the sensor, how come the sensor throws the code???

Because it's seeing lower than expected readings normally.

If the car is stationary and the temp rocks up to 90 on the dash, the sensor is working perfectly. Think about it, if the sensor was knackered, then it wouldn't be reading properly, like ever.

When you are staionary, the water warms up due to the lack of airflow through the rad, you see that reflected in the sensor reading.

Start with the thermo. 110%.

Drain the fluid out of the system using the tap on the bottom of the rad. This was you can catch and reuse the fluid. Sorted.

thank you very much Welly, a great help i almost ordered a sensor...
one las question...... where is the thermostat
Thanks
Dan

Also have a look into you temp sender/switch - that was what was causing faulty temp readings on my dials and therefore leading to bad fuel consumption!
