hi all,

Iv been pondering with the idea of getting my s3 remapped again. Basically I bought it over a year ago with an unknown map, its never felt particularly spritely and the g/s reading has always been on the low side(most iv seen it 200g/s), and when it does feel powerful it would soon run out of puff. Its had new maf, n75, badger 5 filter setup, complete set of coilpacks and various hoses that were split. Would be thinking of going for a revo map with the switching unit, would having this help save any fuel or would it just be better to be lighter footed all the time? Another reason for getting it remapped is that the mapper, will also ask them to give it a health check, as i know the basics but somebody who deals with these engines might be able to uncover something that I cant see.

Was thinking of selling the car, but I also have a van for work and a bike for giggles, the s3 seems the perfect inbetweener, and i do like the car and cant think of anything else in my price range id prefer.

if anywhere, i expect I will be contacting bill @ badger 5, as he is relatively close compared to rtech etc.

your thoughts, comments?

When I got my first map (chippedUK) I thought it made the car feel better but not "night & day" difference like everybody said. After my trip to see bill a few months ago I found out that the map was shocking! Massively underfueling and just a poor map in general. I went for a Revo then and there which bill tweaked slightly on the rollers.

The drive home was quality. The car felt faster, more responsive, and more of a pleasure to drive. Now I've got an old turbo that's in need of a refurb which is why I was down on bhp but the Revo map gave me another 30lbft torque which meant I could keep up with a known more powerful, faster car on the way home.

The fuel will go down quicker on boost but if I keep an eye on my boost gauge and revs I can get well over 30mpg by laying off the boost. Once my turbo has been refurbed and I've got a B5 TIP and FMIC this car will be savage.

I couldn't recommend going Revo enough after my experiences but I would urge you to get it down with power runs and fuel logs done. I'll be heading back to bills hopefully at the end of June so if you fancied the drive get it done at the same time.

I would suggest getting it on the dyno at least for a diagnostic... that way you can see if its the map or something else... in my experience its not always the map thats the issue... if you plan to get in touch with Bill then great as he will always do a diagnostic first and will soon tell you if the map is an issue or not...

Some of the time all thats needed is a few tweaks and everything is running fine again rather than a new map... I have seen maps that either have a really stupid boost request (lazy mappers just turn up the boost) and/or crap fuelling with the WOT/on boost AFR reading far too lean... these are times when new maps could be considered... its not always all about the boost to get power... you can often get more or less the same effect by turning down boost and tweaking timing..

Book in with Bill and he will see you right..

Stop thinking about it! I got my S3 mapped last week with a generic jabbasport remap and it has transformed the car completely. I'd say I'm not seeing any extra mpg but it is going much faster and not any worse on mpg. It's the jump in torque that will put the grin on your face. 6th gear cruising on the motorway, put the foot down and it immediately responds. If you do nothing else to your S3 make sure you get it remapped.

I even convinced my mum to remap her 225 TT last year, turns out it already had a map on it but it was an early map and was never smooth or that powerful. The new more modern map transformed the car.

I still have a grin on my face, I just love blipping the throttle and feeling the car pull like a beast now. Just get it done and stop thinking about it. It will be the best money you've ever spent on the car I guarantee it.

i thought all maps wer the same (silly me)

any1 know what a map from bill would cost and any idea on tip prices from im with/without filter

This might be a route I'd take up sometime in the future if I ever get my act together. Seriously, I must be the longest S3 owner on the forum bar non(10 years I've had mine), but the lack of usage means it just sits in the garage most of the time, specifically coming out for the odd weekend and car shows.

My AmD stage1 was put on some 8 years ago now, and maybe it's due an updated map to get the most out of it.

Do it James, remember my response when you took us out in it at new years? "Oh, I forgot this isn't mapped."

Get it done

Hayes you are such a f@nny. Just do it. Even I have mapped the A3 and I'm just a wimpy girl.xxx

It is mapped you ****... Just not very well

Only pulling you Hayes

Have you met Rob with the Leon? His car has got an air filter and a 007P and it consistently logs 200bhp but there it hasn't ever been mapped. Do you know who mapped it? If its been mapped poorly before I'd take it to Nick at R-Tech, has Prawn told you about when he took his new A3 there and it had a locked trial map on it and he spent hours taking it off, flashing it to stock Audi map and dyno'ing it then remapping it from there.

yeah might be up for that, if i get a chance this week I will give bill a call and check availability. I had a chipped uk map on my last car (tdi), the map didnt give me any problems but i wasnt happy that they disconnectted the vac hose to the EGR valve and left it disconnected. Just after quick results i think.

yeah im sure your right tufty, to be honest its just needs somebody in the know to look at it, as I can just speculate really.

Not sure if they go out of date, cant see how development has come non that far? although a change in map may somewhat make the car feel different.

yeah nick did say how amazing they are. But he is a bit of a rollers slag, i saw he was at regal autosport this weekend. Happy using bill to be honest ifs hes free, plus hes alot closer.

Yeah i met rob at the ring last year. I dont know who mapped it, i wasnt provided a reciept for it, but it defintely is mapped. A few people have said it sounds mapped and does have higher than standard maf readings

Lous logs are suggesting bang on 225bhp, not bad for a stage one (another testament to Nick!)

And yeah, I know what you meant about it feeling mapped. When you put your foot down it felt mapped, than in a gay unremapped kind of way it seemed to not deliver/ Would be interesting to know whats been done to it, maybe it had a test map and has reverted to a non standard map but still not modern remap power.

As for Lou mapping a real car, you'll all be in the dust when I get my next motor. I've been to look at a couple now on the sly and I'm looking for a T5R or V70R AWD, looked at one a week or so ago that was 370bhp :sly:

just out of interest and i mean no offence here but i'm yet to remap my 2002 S3 which i will hopefully do soon. i'm in bournemouth, dorset so was thinking APD Vag specialists - anyone heard anything about them or had any experience with them.. back to my original question - no offence but how many of you guys and girls with remaps declare it on their insurance? and any experience of how much roughly percentage wise it goes up? i'm sure you all declare as it's pretty stupid not to! but was just asking! Josh

I got a Jabbasport map on mine and it's amazing such a better drive to stock

I'm pondering whether to do mine. Does anyone know if the Custom Code maps are any good? I've been offered a deal but its done on the road not rollers? I've seen prices on here and it seems like more as well which is odd.

Do any of them do the service by mail? I guess shipping the ECU might be expensive and also it might need to be tweaked still?

I don't know if anyone does a mail order plug in chip but I wouldn't want one personally if they do. Nothing wrong with it being done on the road if its a good company doing it, it keeps the cost down as it takes time to set the car up on the rollers. Even the generic maps are tweaked. A rolling road custom map will always be the best but may not be worth the extra money unless you're running other mods like sports exhaust, induction kit and imo.

My 1st generic map was total ****e and was done without a rolling road so I had no idea what the fueling was like. When I had the Revo done I was at Bills and he used the rolling road to tweak the map to suit. This would be the best way to get it done for peace of mind and I'll never get a cheap generic map again. Lesson learnt.
