My insurance is up for renewal in about 6 weeks and then I am going for the remap,my present insurer does'nt allow any mods at all so ive got to get that sorted first.Am I right in thinking i will possibly be getting around 225 bhp,so this is about the same as a Scooby wrx which does 0-60 in about 5 seconds and like the Quattro is 4 wheel drive ,I know driveability is more important but out of interest what would 0-60 be after re-map.
The next problem is where to go In my area I am spoilt for choice within 15 miles we have APS.MRC,Amd silverstone and Revo so I need to do some research on prices and such like,Ive seen advert for Amd that they are re-mapping 1.8t for£299.95including diagnostics check, road test, rolling road dyno set up and a laminated power and torque graph they can also supply and fit a pipercross air filter and Forge 007p diverter valve for a £100 when you have your map including vat.Sounds good ?.Would any of you go for the filter or forge or is that a waste of money .APS's re-map is supposed to be smooth and progressive and the Revo 's aggressive.I want it to feel a lot quicker than it does at the present so would you go for the aggressive which has a lot of low down grunt or the progressive which has a more linear delivery.I don't know anything about the MRC map or if they even do one for the 190 as I know they are reknowned for the s4 .The same goes for Amd is that an aggressive map .Anyone have any idea how much the remap effects insurance premium ,hopefully under £100 ?

i don't think it would shave much more than 0.5 seconds off to 60, but where it will gain is through the gears pulling power
i had a 225 1.8T TT remapped to suppose to be 260bhp. definately alot stronger, but without canning the clutch and running gears 0-60 was of no interest. i had a bmc intake and forge 007p which was great. gave a light psst sound, so it may not suit, but did make boost more reliable.

APS are suppose to be very good. I would be tempted to go for a stage 2 custom one rather than generic to match the car

is the b6 4wd haldex control?
the scooby is alot lighter and will be quicker even with a remap i would imagine

out of interest what's your average mpg?

Mate, the S4 only manages 0-60 in 5secs and thats 344bhp...heavy cars - I had a WRX, they are very tinny to keep weight down.. I reckon you'll get 6.5 to 7.0 secs... Not bad tbh :)

You will definately need to replace the RC DV, the bosch one cant handle the extra boost from the remap, i have the same engine just not quattro and i have a the Forge RC DV, replaced the normal air filter with a pipercross panel filter last wknd and very happy, should have done it sooner. £100 for the 2 fitted is not a bad price, but you can get the Forge 007p dv for about £80 and a panel filter for £35, there not difficult to fit about a 10min job if your handy with the spanners...

Hi mate we average around 27 mpg so i'm hoping the map will help that a bit as well

The B6 A4, and all A4 quattro's, have the Torsen diff setup.

You're right though, the B6 A4 is a heavy lump and 0-60 won't be as quick as a scooby wrx.

Rog the remap i have along with the other mod's still give's me a nice 36.5 mpg on a long run with a light right foot. I think the 225 bhp is a little ott as i still have yet to replace my side mounted intercooler's with a front mounted set up as advised by Badger5 (Bill) at the last ASN rolling road event which the car only managed to 216 bhp over three run's.. I have read good and bad reports about upgrading the panel filter. I have also yet to be convinced about upgrading the dump valve. The remap will give your car a whole new feel and is a worth while spend go for it..

Thanks Colin i've been itching to get it done for ages and as long as the insurance quotes are'nt stupid its definately getting done .

Rog why do you need to tell the insurance company as there is no way of knowing a car has been remaped unless it's stuck on a Rolling Road and logged.

I will heartily recommend a re-map. I had mine done on Monday. The car feels completely different. Much better power delivery and damn it feels quick.

I know mate but I'm not the luckiest bloke around and if they tested the odd car at random after an accident it would bound to be mine ,not that I'm planning on having one.I've also stupidly asked the present insurance company for quote on a remap when they told me they don't allow any mods and just wondered if the sneaky gits make a note of it on the computer. Also would like to do some more mods ,performance exhaust, slight tints on rear windows perhaps alloys (undecided as I do like the s6's) and I just thought if you have some mods they might dig a bit deeper you know they try all they can not to payout.
Perhaps I'm being to cautious perhaps I should just go for it ,it sounds like some of you guys are'nt worried about it ,it would be interesting to see if any one has dissclosed it to their insurance company I don't want to be the only ?What about your other mods have you told them about them or just not the map ? Its ok guys I'm a builder not an insurance investigator.
How do we find out if anyone has had a claim refused because they have found out about an undisclosed map or is it something that they are not going to investigate .Thanks guys

Rog i would / have told my insurance company about all the mod's ie wheel's ,suspension, cat and exhaust which i feel is must. (that reminds me i must tell the wife to let her insurance company know that her 1.4 16v polo will need a new quote next year as we will be droping a 1.8T in it.) I think your correct to play safe if you are going to mod your car but to let them know the car has been remaped i'm on the fence. Rog i hope you do pull the trigger on the mod's and hope to read your progress threads along with seeing the car and yourself at AITP this coming August.

Thanks bud ,that little polo will be a flyer. We are planning to be at AITP and look forward to catching up with you perhaps all the 190's can park up together?I'm thinking of going to the GTI do at Bruntigthorpe but won't know until the week before so might catch you there as well.Ihave seen an insurance company advertising in the Audi mag that does'nt charge for some mods so i will see what there like.As soon as I get the map done I will put a post on to let you know how it went.

Rog it would be great to see you at GTI Inters as it's just like AITP but with a little track action (a short walk) from the Club stand sections. The event is a relaxed, and as you know already the ASN stand has a great bunch of folk milling about the place, it's one of the shows that raises the bar each year..

Only just seen this. I'm having mine remapped at AmD Essex this week and will also be getting the 007p and pipercross panel filter. I've read enough about the stock DV to believe this is necessary. Mine isn't a quattro but gains should be similar and I'll post up the charts when all done. I'll be interested to see what it will be RR'd at as standard first. As others have said, you'll get nowhere near the scooby 0-60 times. I would have thought 0.8 to 1 second improvement would be absolute tops, putting it nearer to 7 or a bit above I would have thought. Also, I'm aware that some people haven't quite seen the 35 bhp gains promised by most, but at least AmD carry out the health checks and do before and after logs and I was happy with the results on my previous NA motor.

Really I'm doing mine to bring the torque lower down the rev range as I do miss that presently. I'm keeping an open mind on whether I'll change the turbo intake pipe as I've seen examples of this collapsing near max boost. If it runs OK I won't bother.

Hi GaryT could you let us know how you get on at AMD this week? It would be good to here what the remap is like from AMD on a 190.

Of course. Probably by next week as remap Thursday and want to test it. Interested what you came from as I also had the (rare) tolly v5 but 10 valve remapped to 170 hence why I miss the torque even though the a4 beats it in most areas except for toys. I don't regret the change but I do miss the unhurried performance of the v5 in some respects. Watch this space!

HI Gary I too miss my Toledo a much under rated car if you ask me, I had a 170 20v and owned it it four four years and had some great times. I've been round europe a few time in the old girl and she has not missed a beat. My Toledo was much better on fuel than my Audi even though it was a V5. I'm SCN and my user name is tol16v I think your on there but cant remember your user name?

I look forward to seeing what AMD can do with your A4 190?

AMD did your Toledo before if I remember rightly?

good luck on Thursday

Hi nozdog - it's Gray not Gary (but easily done ;-) ) - Yes, I'm on SCN much less these days but it's a great forum and I do look in now and again. Same username on there as here.

I feel the same way as you. The Toledo eats up the miles with ease and it was a sad loss in a way. It's hard to tell on fuel with prices having gone up so much anyway, but I think in part having to use the revs more with the A4 means you tend to drive in a more "spirited" way. I'll be interested if the dynamics change when I have the remap and perhaps get a bit of torque lower down. That's really what I want. Yes, I got the V5 remapped with AmD. Of course being an NA motor the gains were not huge but it made a difference, but I think (hope) this will be more obvious. I have a niggle that my 190 might be slightly under but it seems to drive better since new coilpacks done via the recall. The RR tests will soon tell - I just hope there's nothing I have to sort out in addition to the remap.

I do enjoy the audi but I miss some of the more subtle refinements of the V5. It was a lot of car for very little money and a steal for anyone with 1 or 2k to spare right now.

Hi GrayT sorry for getting that wrong oops. The SCN forum is just as good as the ASN forum lots of good guy willing to help with good info about the B6 A4. I sold my toledo to a guy I know from work and its still going strong with 140000 miles plus when I sold it. I would have got another one but it was time for a change and the later Toledo did not do it for me. I dont know what Seat where thinking with the MK3 should have been the Exeo. My Dad has got the new S4 and after he let me drive that that's why I got my A4 and they say like father like son. :)

When I brought my A4 it was surging a little under acceleration but since I have changed the N75 valve dump valve and the temp sensor its been much better. no surging at all. Good luck at AMD

OK, so I couldn't wait - hot off the laminator at AmD, here's my charts following AmD remap, 007p diverter valve and pipercross panel filter fitting:

IMG.jpg

The Basics
As I suspected I was very slightly down pre-remap, but not by too much. Power before 184 bhp (4 short - isn't the 190 188?) and torque 180.
After remap peak power now 212.2 and torque near enough 220 at 219.5.
Gains of 28.3 horse power and 39.2 torques.

I've been told that as the map settles in it may gain a bit more, but I'm not overly bothered.

The Chart
This is what I came for. I was less interested in top end hp and more interested in available torgue lower down the rev range - especially as I migrated to the 1.8T from a V5. I'm very happy with this aspect. Others will be more experienced at interpretting these charts than I but you can see that as standard the peak torque came in as a bit of a blip between 4000 and 4500 rpm, the remapped graph shows a much smoother curve and the available power is there lower down the rev range. If you check out the chart at 3500 rpm you will see I now have about 220 torques available rather than the 170 before, so behind the headline peak gains the way I drive day to day the available torque is 50 up on what it was before and this is reflected across a fair bit of the range.

The Drive
I am writing this up early and I haven't tried a broad range of driving conditions just a return on the national speed limit A13 and a few short blasts on some safe B roads. Firstly it sounds a bit throatier with a slight rumble it didn't have before and you notice a bit of noise coming off boost, but again not too much. I like that. At motorway cruisning speeds I was finding the torque was there straight away and it reminded me of the V5 in some respects. I will not have to change down nearly so much to gain the power to progress through overtaking, etc. I do expect to see gains in economy (I know people debate this), but I'm likely to be using lower revs for most of my day to day driving and at cruising speeds. The power available for rapid acceleration in 2nd and 3rd was startling. The 190 already had the edge on the V5 with this, but I now feel I've got the car I anticipated when I first bought it. It feels more like a proper performance car now.

That's about all I can say for now. I will test it in a variety of conditions tomorrow and of course time will tell that there are no secondary issues, etc. (I'm hoping I won't need a more rigid TIP for example), but as of now I'm smiling - and I have to say that the service by Patrick and those at AmD couldn't have been more helpful.

AMD ESSEX? How much was the total cost if you dont mind me asking?

Hi GrayT good write up about your day at AMD looks ok to me. How long did it take them to complete the remap and like LeeT said was the cost of the remap 007P and filter if you dont mind us asking?

Hi guys. Yes, Essex. I left the car with them when I went to work but I was asked if I wanted to wait. There is a waiting room or of course Lakeside shopping.

The remap was 300 (recently reduced from 400 I gather). The forge dv and panel filter came to 135 all fitted. I know some don't bother with those but I've read enough to know I wanted an uprated dv. All prices include vat.

i just had mine re maped yesterday, i love the result, i get 203 bhp out of it now, and the fule SEEMS to be lasting longer too. altho its a bit early to tell, mine was only the 163 bhp modle, tho it duz have a pipercross filter, but what eva its putting out now i LOVE the result
better still. if you live in west yorkshire , aroud bradford ect theres a place doing CUSTOM re maps for £100, yep thats not a typo, but its a limited offer, price go's to £200-250 after, have a look for www.costomtuning .co.uk
i am well happy with them, do mobile re-maps too

Hi mate. Yes, very good thanks, no looking back at all. For me it's a more complete drive all round and I'm definitely more aware of the turbo. The acceleration by holding in 2nd can be quite startling - the power keeps surging through the wheels for what seems like an eternity - I think it surprises a few people. As noted previously the torque is also available without a change down at cruising speeds and dual carriageway/motorway speeds for hasty but relaxed overtaking. I'm absolutely delighted with it - it feels like the car the 190 should have been from the beginning.

You can hear a bit of psssst from the forge valve but nothing stupid and not like the whoosh of a dv. The engine has a slightly sportier note, I'm not sure if that's down to the panel filter or not? There have been no negatives whatsoever. I've not really monitored before and after economy figures but if anything I would think there's a slight fuel saving under normal driving. 212bhp doesn't sound like a huge step up but it does feel it. It's enough for me and for the motor. I had slight niggles in my head after moving from the V5 even though the A4 was quicker, but none at all now, it's got all of the qualities I like :)
