Hey all, new here, but got a question already. Been searching for information about this everywhere and can't really find an answer so thought I would ask.

I recently purchased a 2002 Audi A3 1.9 TDi(130) Sport and after about 5 minutes of driving the light for ESP (Traction Control) comes on and stays on. When I turn off the engine it will be fine again and stay off for 5 mintues. When the light is on, the car will spin very easily. Anyone know of this issue and how to fix it?

Oh yeah the ESP button doesn't do anything as well, if I press it nothing happens. Light doesn't go on or off.

Thanks.

I had the same problem around 3 months back, took it to audi they said it was a dodgy break switch behind the brake pedal.
They changed it cost me £80! mind you, problem solved. :)

That's what I have read so far that the issue could be, but just wondering what else I can check over. £80 is alright I was thinking it would be a more expensive issue lol.

buy the switch and fit it yourself
5 mins job save 60 quid

It could be any of the sensors in the ESP system. Get it on a vcds (vag com) and it will tell you which one needs replacing. Don't waste money guessing. Either way i believe they are all under the drivers side dash

I had the same symptoms and had to replace my lateral acceleration sensor (g200) and the dealer wanted approx 100 just for the part (first they said 400 as they come in a set till i told them i have the specific part no). Got one from a breaking audi tt from ebay for 20.

Theres loads of threads about this problem

Like benr said it could be lots of problems related to ESP. I fixed mine, simply by taking the G200 sensor out, and resoldered all the pins!

Obviously said the man who is quite handy with the soldering iron !

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I need to get it on Vag-Com, well I have tried that already, but no faults actually showed up, but wondering if theres something wrong with my cable as it also didn't show anything up on my old golf.

Any people in Aberdeenshire can hook it up and have a look?

Will try it again later on and see how I get on.

Did you scan Group 3 ABS Brakes?

Was just reading this thread, i've got a similar problem with my ESP light. Tried scanning with my VAGCOM and it gave me the following under the ABS group, not the engine ecu however the enginer ECU light is on at the same time. Car still drivable.

01314 - Engine Control module
013 check DTC memory

Anybody have any probable solutions.

Rich

hi there,

mine is having the same problem, ESP light + ABS light on, leaving me without ABS... but that is not happening all the time, probably once a month... and it is fixed after turning off the car for while... though I also think it is related to the ABS pump...

hi guys i want to buy an 2002 audi s3 but the guys abs light and esp stays on.he says its a faulty relay but i need to know for sure???

what can i do?

thanks

@ S3 beast: I replied to your other topic.

@ EricPacheco: Sounds like you got a intermittent problem, might just be some dodgy electronics, you need to get Module 3 ABS brakes scanned via Vagcom.

Legacy 91, not doubting your comment but how can you be sure. Do i need to replace the whole pump? How much could this be?

You tried clearing the fault codes, drive around, then scan it again?
If its just your ESP light then I highly doubt its the ABS pump, ESP is linked with a G200 Lateral Acceleration Sensor and a G202 Yaw sensor with a steering angle sensor beneath your steering wheel. A fault with any would throw up an light, also MAF can also trigger it as its on the same circuit.

when i try to read the ABS codes i now get a warning on my VAGCOM "too many communication errors" which is bewildering me. I do get idleing issues from time to time, which may be related? I have done a DIY repair on my PCV system as i had some of the normal splits and the engine fault codes have now gone. Perhaps i should change the G200 and G202 if they are cheap for the hell of it to try and eliminate potential root causes.
