Just popped into my local VAG Specialist and asked for a quote on a transmission oil change and filter. I was told the "strainer" is not normally changed during a routine oil change. I queried that I was sure a filter had to be changed at the same time, so the specialist called the dealership who confirmed only the oil needed changing.
Am I dreaming that a filter should be changed also??

From my understanding Audi states it's not a requirement but many sites suggests it's done. So confusing!

just as a matter of interest how much did they quote as Im wanting mine changing

£85 for the oil alone + labour and the filter (if required), anyone shed any light on this filter issue?

Some horror stories out there. Change at 40,000 miles!

Spoken to the indy today. We have agreed to get the filter in as well. If it looks a pig of a job only the oil will be done BUT the pan will be removed to wipe away the ***** before the oil is renewed. Was thinking of asking to be present to get some pictures and perhaps a breif write up, would anyone be interested in this or am i wasting my time?

If they will allow it, then pics and a write up would be a good idea and very beneficial.

Just a quick note, i had my oil changed by a independent and they spent ages checking whether the filter needed changing+oil prices as its well expensive and they used some mercedes oil!!! in the end as its exactly the same but half the price....by the by they didnt change the filter in mind as its not a priority...

You better get that mercedes oil drained- most likely is a dextron 2/3 oil wich will most likely damage the box and make shure the chap that refils it knows how to properly fill the box and also the final drive ! The multitronic box is very susceptible from over/under inflation ! Beware...

Oil is £85+vat so over £100 on oil takes some swallowing, however will only use the right stuff after reading the horror stories on the net. Seems a little wrong spending all that money on oil and leaving a contaminated filter in place. Think I'll play this by ear and change the filter if accessible.

i would get the filter changed if possible, and my plan now after having a recon box and brand new ecu is to renew oil every 20,000 or 2 years, and then have the filter changed every 40,000 miles, just to be on the safe side.
£100 oil + labour is nothing compared to the bills you'll be facing should a problem develop with the box...

Ok, had the oil changed in the box, strainer/filter was on standby. However once the car was in the air it was obvious the strainer wasn't going to be easy to change, the box would need to be vertically split, so would be very very expensive. However the oil was drained and refilled at the correct temperature using vagcom and genuine oil. FYI Here is a pic of the old oil, on examination no particles where found in the oil although looked very discoloured.
